Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

Only reason I rated it a 4 is the people taking money are bland and appear they do not like their jobs.Secondly, if you are disabled, there is no accessible means of getting to the floors (4). Don't dress too warm because by the time you reach the fourth floor, you are hot from the climb.

Other than that, this place is lovely with so much history surrounding the castle. I recommend.

To think I have been to Victoria hundreds of times, and just made it to this spectacular site now! The woodwork alone is worth a visit. Notice all the different inlays in the wooden floors. Also, don’t miss the 35 minute film. The pictures are astounding. This is definitely a treasure. If you don’t like stairs don’t go, as there are 4 floors. You have to look up to see the lighting, and the special treats near the ceiling. The Docents are helpful.

I am limited in my movement and could not find a way to get inside the castle. If there is access for those with mobility limitations there was no signage.

We thoroughly enjoyed touring Craigdarroch Castle. A unique glimpse into the life and customs of a privileged 1890s family. Helpful volunteers are scattered throughout the house to answer questions about the home. There is also a nice little gift shop located in the ticket office building, adjacent to the main house.
