Best Accommodation in Vancouver

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 12 Aug 2019via mobile
We are regular visitors to Vancouver and I always seek out the best places to stay. I’m not sure how we have missed Barclay House on other visits, and will now always return. The House, Bedrooms, location are all perfect. You are walking distance to everything, the home is beautiful and well kept. We stayed in both the Peak and Beach rooms. Peak is huge and both rooms were great for 3 people. Is very quiet, which we love! The host is lovely and we are very thankful to have found Barclay House. We will recommend to family and friends and look forward to returning again soon. Thanks again Dennis and team x

We returned again to Barclay House because of the great location, beautiful house and the great service by the staff. Dennis is dedicated to making a stay here be a memorable experience. He bakes all of the morning breads and has great attention to detail for the rest of the breakfast. Staff is very helpful with regard to reasonable requests. This is not a multistory hotel and so not all things are available. If you want that kind of experience, one of the many high priced hotels will suit you better. Very great value for the price in a lovely setting.

We stayed in the beach room which was super comfy. The bed was great. The wifi was hit or miss - some nights it worked great and other times it would cut out. The breakfast were good - one of the three were great. The other two were good. Breakfast however felt more like I was eating at a hotel then a B&B. My husband tried to engage Dennis in conversation, but he didn't seem that interested in talking to guests. Typically, I feel like B&B owners are chatty and more welcoming. Parking spot included was great. Good location (30 minutes walk to Stanley park, 30 min walk to gastown).

We stayed for 4 nights in the Mountain room in June. Slightly odd setup of room with a private bathroom down a short corridor (not accessed by anyone else except in theory as a fire escape). The room itself is small, but with the corridor to store bags the size was adequate. And the bed was good. Notably it is a lot cheaper than the other rooms so it is only reasonable to expect some trade-offs, and we didn't think them too onerous.

For this room, in this lovely old house in such a great location in central Vancouver, we thought the pricing was very reasonable. Not least because it included (easy) on site parking and a gourmet breakfast prepared by Dennis and his team every day. The breakfast was really good, changing each day, and Dennis was an excellent host.

Recommended without hesitation or reservation.

The 1904 built house is located quietly in West End area between Stanley Park and Burrard Street. Dennis and his partner are very friendly hosts, they created a nice and cosy appearance of the living room and breakfast area. Everywhere fancy decorations, placed with dedication and the aim to make it special. You did 
Breakfast is served as a three course menu. As this menu is fix, Dennis offers alternatives in case of allergies. During serving he tells a lot about hot spots and recommends locations in and all around Vancouver. It’s a pleasure to listen!
Overall in the house there is a special not very pleasant smell. In the living room a dispenser ejects regularly a kind of refreshener. No idea if this should cover the smell or is the source for it. Housekeeping was perfect, rooms are clean.
Regarding the feedbacks of other guests we unfortunately can not follow for the so called “Garden Suite”. It’s located in the basement with a separate entrance. The appearance is slightly as shown on the website, it unfortunately looks not that nice. The wooden patio of the entrance of the house is the ceiling of the suite. Pray that no one returns back home lately …… Opening windows is not possible due to missing fly screens. As the garden needs some attention as its growing over and over there is not very much light shining in. The chimney works pretty good, but it seems to be the only way to heat up the rooms.
The kitchenette really looks worn out and the defective coating of the bath tub should be a no-go in any B&B. Sorry Dennis, maybe next time in another room…. Finally we say thanks, you are wonderful hosts!

Situated in a quiet area of the West End. in walking distance to most of Vancouver’s attractions

This was my second visit to the Mountain Room at the 1920’s built Barclay House.

The room was clean and suited our needs with a private bathroom along the hall – and complimentary cookies – lovely.

The complimentary breakfasts are fantastic, however they are served to you and there is not the choice that you may expect when compared with other B&B’s – not a problem to us though – we loved them!

Dennis is a great host and is able to help with local information and many other strange requests - like ‘would you have a charger cable for this old Sat Nav ?’

Shame we couldn’t have spent longer here but we were on a tight timescale and am sure will return again in the near future.

Keep up the good work Dennis, was good to meet you again, and perhaps you’ll have had that lift fitted next time we come ;)
