The Wick ......Where the Deer and the Antelope Play.

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Nov 2021
Snuggled in an untamed strip of unparalleled Canadian Pacific Coast Oceanic geography, amongst the Western Red Cedar and the Sitka Spruce trees of Chesterman Beach (near Tofino) is the modern day frontier lodge, the Wickaninnish Inn (lots of inns running thru it). The Wick, as it tenderly referred to, is spread over 2 cedar buildings that house the luxurious rooms of the property, one is dubbed the 'on-the-Beach' building and its brother, the 'at-the-Point structure. Both buildings were fabricated from natural materials (wood, stone, etc) with huge glass windows allowing lots of natural light. The interior decor is rustic, stylish and sumptuous reflecting the colours of the landscape in order generate an inside-outside ' at every corner' mantra as the all encompassing atmosphere of the Wick. Although on the brink of Tofino, the Wick's physical assets drive guests to its naturally inspired activities like a magnet. As a result, exploring natures trails, taking to the water to watch whales breach, discover lonely waterways by kayak and storm hunting are sought after activities amongst other highlights. A great deal of time and care was taken to tie the Inn back to its natural heritage accompanied by a luxurious modern touch. The service and staff was just as natural as the wilderness.

My base camp was a swankier deluxe room in the Beach Building. It was intricately akin to a luxury wilderness retreat with repurposed custom-crafted driftwood and liv-edge furniture and weathered tones in the decor. The balcony provided exhilarating, sweeping, panoramic views of the wild, wild West Coast as well as a floor-to-ceiling picture window that framed the landscape in a solid captivating view. A big black fireplace dotted the room, the exposed woodwork was dramatic and embellished the surroundings in a way that made you feel that you were 'out and about' in the the woods. Beige and green colour schemes mimicked the palette of the natural surrounding in an attempt to make the indoor-outdoor theme run the the room. The bath was outfitted with a deep soaker tub and heated floors took care of cold tootsies. My bed was king configured, super huge and the fluffy white linens were big enough to wrap up a bear in my bed.

The Wick is blessed with 3 eating and drinking venues: The Pointe Restaurant, the Driftwood Cafe and the OnThe Rocks Lounge. The magnificent Pointe embraces an architecturally circular design that affords guests a 360 -120 degree floor-to-ceiling view of the ocean. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu is chucked with hearty West Coast cuisine augmented by creative culinary twists. I loved my smokey sablefish dinner served with glazed mushrooms and paired with a notable Pacific
Northwest wine. Much of the kitchens seafood comes from the surrounding waters so it is fresh and yummy on the tummy.

The homey Driftwood Cafe provides a comfy, casual, toasty atmosphere with its open fire. It serves up home-made pastries and light bites by day and topas by night. A popular spot for a night cap and with easy access to the ocean, pairs nicely with a stroll on the beach. On The Rocks Lounge is set on a platform above the restaurant and provides dizzying views. Drinks are crafted concoctions with the signature cocktail: a local cedar infused whiskey sour, ....with a terrific tangy tingle.

Ah the Spa.....the forest sheltered Ancient Cedars Spa which offers treatments inspired by the regions indigenous people and that are immersed in the elements of the natural surroundings such as the 'hot sea stone ' massage, the organic sea facial and others. But the 'great spirit' ritual is the 'Hishuk Ish Tsawalk' treatment which brings together fire, water, earth and air in a cleansing ceremony. Nothing is as encompassing as my hot stone massage in one of the little spa shacks that sit on the rocky outcrops ....like teetering on the edge of Canada.

It's a real treat to visit the carving shed to see the artisans who have designed the hotels doors, mantles and other woodworks. If nature would have it, one could be invigorated by one of the Wicks famous storm events; as for me, when the gales blow I'll hunker down in my room.... ....I don't want to get hit by an airborne bear.

If you are exploring for a commune with nature that encompasses an upscale vibe, the likes of a spa, rustic-luxury accommodations and culinary delights.....................
then try the............Wick...........Where the Deer and the Antelope Play.

My husband surprised me with a trip to the Wickaninnish Inn for my birthday and everything about our stay was perfect. We loved looking at the winter ocean from our tub, the view was breathtaking. It is magical at Christmas with the lights up as well. They left a little Birthday card and gift in our room for me which we enjoyed very much and they personalized a menu for our dinner.

This was my first time staying here and I have nothing but amazing things to say… First of all the staff are so friendly and genuine. They make you feel really special and they don’t treat you like a number. The food is absolutely incredible. The presentation and the flavour were 10/10. Big thanks to Jonathan G who served us dinner at the Pointe restaurant. He knew everything about the menu and told us which wines to pair with our meal. Absolutely amazing. Now let’s talk about the views WOW! Ocean front views perfect for watching the waves crash on the beach and the storm clouds rolling in. The rooms were extremely cozy especially the beds! This hotel is Perfect for every occasion whether it be for a couple, family or just solo. Will be back as soon as I can! Thank you to Antoine and all the front desk staff at the beach building who made our stay stress free! Can’t wait to come back!

This hotel is right beside Chesterman beach on a rock outcropping so the views are fantastic. Rooms are expansive and are well appointed with locally made products. Loved their soap so much I had to buy quite a few to take home. Bikes were available on a first come first served basis and it was nice to ride them on the beach and explore the area.

My wife and I recently celebrated her Birthday at the Point. We found everything to be perfect in every way. Like every Relaix & Chateaux property we have visited this one lived up to its reputation. From the restaurant to to all of the helpful staff we were made to feel very welcome and appreciated. We definitely will be returning for another visit soon.

The Wick falls under the Relais & Chateaux banner which means you'll receive impeccable service from the moment you arrive on the property right until you leave. Excellent food, superior views and amazing spa services all set right on Chesterman Beach. Inventive cocktails available in the lounge as well as an extensive scotch list. Try the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings or order a la carte with help from some of the most experienced sommeliers I have ever had the privilege of speaking with (look for John). An experience you won't forget.
