Booked the Sunset House for our family gathering, to celebrate our 30th Anniversary, and a late Christmas too, as we were all together in one place. And it was the perfect place! Where to start???
Four bedrooms are all located downstairs, as soon as you walk in the door. So they are cooler than upstairs. That is okay, as I like it cooler for sleeping anyway. But the floor is cold too. So slippers would be a good idea to pack. Mind you, our visit was in January. There are two bedrooms that offer the wonderful views of the ocean. One of the other bedrooms has two twin beds. So there are options for all kinds of family or friend groupings.
The master bedroom had a wonderful ensuite too. BIG. Shower only though, no tub. The toilet was in its own small room, with a closet door.
The other bathroom had a tub. Small though. That was the only complaint from our adult kids. No counter room at all for toothbrushes or other toiletries.
Upstairs had the living room, the kitchen, and a small den. The small den has a futon that can be used, if needed. We actually used the den for our grandson during the day, as we were upstairs all day long.
Living room is huge, and so very comfortable. Two huge couches, can fit four people easily. The fireplace is so nice, and makes the room quite warm. WARNING!!! We had the fireplace going all evening our first day. That meant the furnace didn't come on at all, and the downstairs was really cold when we all went to sleep! So be aware of that, when turning on the fireplace. Huge TV above the fireplace, but not sure about it, as we never turned it on.
Kitchen is great! We used it a lot, even cooking a turkey dinner for our Christmas in January. Mind you, we did bring some things from home, just to make it easier. One thing we didn't bring, was a griddle for our pancake breakfast. I had contacted the office earlier, and they said that they would have one for us, in the house. It wasn't there. We only needed to call the office, and someone brought the griddle out to the house for us right away. It had obviously been in storage, as it was quite dusty. No biggy.
We had issues with the coffee maker too. If you like weak coffee, or are not making a full pot for a lot of coffee drinkers, then you will most likely be fine with the machine. The filter is a reusable one, and it kept overflowing. I think that we may have been grinding the coffee beans too fine to handle the reusable filter. Coffee grinder is there too, as is a supply of Tofino coffee. The house staff did bring us another coffee machine to try, but we just switched out the filter instead, hoping that a new one would work better.
Tons of dishes in this kitchen too! And nice serving dishes, even champagne glasses, which we used.
The hot tub! Loved the hot tub, sitting out on the deck, with that gorgeous view. When we went to use it the second time, it was not hot! Wasn't on at all. Another phone call to the reception desk. Gosh, those guys are fast! He was out right away, and knew exactly what to do. New part has been ordered, but no telling when it will be fixed. But it is a quick fix, and we knew what to do the next time, when the hot tub stopped working again. Just needed to switch the breaker! Mind you, we would never have found that breaker, as it is concealed behind a picture in one of the bedrooms. So, we were able to fix it ourselves the next time it happened.
We had so much fun, just being together as a family, enjoying the hot tub, playing board games, and just talking, that we never even went to the beach! Okay, we live in Nanaimo, and visit the west coast a lot, so not visiting the beach wasn't a "sin". And, when we were leaving that morning, one daughter did yell from the back of the vehicle... "we have to stop at the beach before we go home!!!!"
The location of the house is so nice and private. You can walk out to the point very easily from the house. We actually did take family pictures from the rocky shore down below the house.
We had an amazing weekend there, and made some great memories too. It didn't matter the weather, not at all.
OH, one last thing.... there is a washer and dryer in the bedroom with the twin beds. We never even knew it was there, until we were packing up to leave!

Markus M, Guest Relations Manager at Pacific Sands Beach Resort, responded to this reviewResponded 6 February 2017

Dear J0an123,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with Pacific Sands Beach Resort. It sounds like you had a very memorable time in the amazing Sunset House.

Thank you for all the detailed feedback, I will definitely be following up with the Housekeeping Manager to see if we can sort out the issue with the coffee maker. I will also touch base with the maintenance team to see if we can make sure the hot tub breaker doesn't continue to go off for future guests.

It sounds like you really took advantage of all the Sunset House has to offer, and we're glad your family got to create some new memories. We hope to see you again in the future!

Sincerely,

Markus McRurie
Evening Supervisor

Stayed in the one bedroom condo (second bedroom locked off). We have been here several times before but it has been several years.
Absolutely everything you need is supplied. Just like home except your on the beach in Tofino. There was nothing else you needed. Kitchen was fully supplied.
Interaction with any of the staff, front desk, housekeeping, maintenance, every one could not help enough. We are very pleased.
So many places you go sound super but always seem to be a completely different story upon arrival.
Not here, expect the best and that is what you will find.

Room tip: Several types available, dependant on price.

The resort is right on the beach, a few steps from our room and voila, Cox Bay is there to stroll, run or do cartwheels on the sand. Dogs run free, so can we!
The rooms are tastefully understated, clean and modern. It appears rooms are upgraded as needed.
The staff is cheerful, helpful when needed. The available crab pots are most welcome to cook up fresh dungeness crab, a real treat.
The anticipated rain did not disappoint, no worries, the gas fireplace cheered up the room and the peace and quiet meant we could tackle the books long meglected.

Dogs are permitted, another reason to stay.

Room tip: Request a room closer to the beach.

Wet & Wild west coast! This resort is on a fabulous location right on Cox Bay, Literally just steps from the ocean! We were greeted by Jasmine who we had read lots about in plenty of reviews! She was friendly and efficient and had us off to our Beach House promptly! We would recommend to book a beach house, they are in the best location and have all the amenities that you would need! We only wish we could stay longer.

My husband and I had planned this trip years ago, and didn't make it. They refunded our deposit at that point, and we vowed to come back. This year, we made it! Beautiful rooms, beautiful scenery and great service.
Our only suggestions would be that the rooms lacked a music system (we easily could have brought our own, didn't even think about it) and that the glassware in the rooms is small. I like a bowl of coffee in the morning, and a bowl of wine in the evening and I felt like I was getting shots of both.
Oh, and there was a loose board in our bathroom that sounded like someone was tooting every time I stepped on it. I blamed my husband every time.
Otherwise, 10/10, would happily stay again!

Room tip: Beachfront rooms are slightly back from the beach, great view regardless
