“Worthwhile Diversion in Banff Area”

Minnewanka Loop / Lake Johnson
Reviewed 2 July 2017

We rented a car at Calgary Airport and drove to Banff, stopping off to do this loop on the way. Turned out to be a good decision, as we had a nice drive and saw long-horned sheep and a black bear along the way. Very close to Banff and a manageable drive.

Beautiful easy walk around a well cleared trail. Gorgeous views and a lovely pair of loons calling back and forth.

The Minnewanka loop is easily found on the first exit ramp to Banff off the transcanada from Canmore and Calgary. Take the right hand turn for the loop drive. About 4 km you will see a sign for Johnson lake. Take this road and you arrive at a parking area with toilets and a picnic area. Great place to have lunch with the lake and mountains. The walk around the lake is mainly flat and suitable for children. The path stays pretty close to the lake but you do walk through trees. This area is part of the small remixing montane zone that is important habitat for large ungulates such as elk. Bears are also seen in this area in the fall as there are lots of buffalo berry bushes off the trail. You can continue the drive and there are a couple of nice stops up to the day use area on the lake. This was a great day out just a short drive from Banff.

Nice for a little stroll. Make sure you have a parks pass as we didn't get told about it from our hotel when we checked in late at night and ended up getting a warning violation from the parks people.

We hiked Johnson Lake (which is an easy 3 km stroll around this small lake), had lunch along Lake Minnewanka and then hiked the Stewart Canyon & Cascade River/Canyon Trail (7.7km). The GPS was an asset in keeping us on the Canyon trail that seemed to disappear.
