“Great holiday and we will definitely be back”
Reviewed 2 September 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We originally camped at Watercress with friends in June and had such a good experience that we booked a lodge there and then. Jo gave us a warm welcome and made the whole process very easy. We travelled with two children, the youngest of whom was just two. A high chair and travel cot were supplied at no extra cost. The lodge itself was immaculate and to a very high spec. There was nothing we were in need of and the location itself is stunning. We stayed in the Alresford Lodge which boasts a direct view on to the railway line. We didn't grow tired of hearing the steam engines in the distance and watching them go by as we sat and ate lunch. There is lots to do in the local area. We had one particularly wet day but a trip on the railway line (we were kindly given a discounted rate by Jo) and a trip to the nearby Science Centre took care of that. There are also plenty of National Trust properties nearby and we enjoyed a days cycling in the New Forest.

Thanks again for your kind hospitality. We have told plenty of our friends about you and hope to return in the not too distant future.

“Great Mid Hants Lodges”
Reviewed 26 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

I have been a member of the Mid-Hants Railway since 1977,, a shareholder to boot, and once an active volunteer, remembering when Ropley station was surrounded by just waste railway land following the withdrawal of BR, with just a 3 mile line down to Aylesford.. Since then a lot of hard work has been done to regenerate it into a thriving heritage railway centre of maintenance and leisure facilities for the thousands of visitors, including so many very happy children who will be the future of this heritage!

The lodges are an EXCELLENT facility that, whilst not owned by the MHR, are available to tourists and railway enthusiasts alike and just add so much to the MHR experience. They have all the features a modern holiday home away from home require, and certainly were very much enjoyed by our family, which included a 4 year boy (now a very enthusiastic steam railway fan!) and an 11 year old autistic lad. The Lodge was a great base for our trips to many Hampshire attractions - Paultons Park; Portsmouth Historic Dockyard; Southampton Docks and Titanic museum; Southsea; Isles of Wight; New Forest; Beaulieu Motor Museum, and much more! To come home to such a lovely Lodge "home", and often yet another trip on the railway, was superb!

I would HIGHLY recommend these lodges to any family, let alone group of friends. You will not be disappointed. I would also recommend you becoming a member of the Mid-Hants Railway whilst at it to keep this wonderful experience alive!!

“Perfect way to see Thomas!”
Reviewed 15 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We stayed at the campsite with 2 children and it was perfect! Cars are parked away from the tents so children can play around the tent without worrying about cars. The site borders the Watercress line and the kids loved standing by the fence in the morning watching Thomas 'wake' up. Toilet block was spotless as was the washing up area with a freezer for ice blocks.

Will be going back again as the perfect site for us to get away for a couple of nights.

“Superb self catering lodges set in a picturesque location close to the steam trains”
Reviewed 13 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

One of our best holidays ever! We stayed in one of the 6 self catering lodges and it was so clean and new looking- everything was spotless! Very modern and up to date accommodation. I am really fussy about where we stay and about cleanliness and these lodges are exceptional. Everything you might need is catered for. Being so close to the steam trains and railway line was brilliant- we couldn't quite believe how close we were to the station! This is a beautiful place to stay and very tranquil. We will definitely be back and already trying to organise our next visit.

“Watercress Campsite - Tipi Tent One Night Stay”
Reviewed 5 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

My wife and I stayed here for one night with our 5 year old as his birthday treat. As we are novice campers and don't have any camping equipment at all, we booked a tipi tent plus ordered extras: two air mattresses (£6 for double and £4 for single) and a portable cooker with butane canister (£6). We found the Tipi tent pre-erected and situated quite close to the shower/toilet block. On their website, it says can accommodate six people but that would be a bit of a squeeze, I think four is a comfortable number. We managed to park our car just a few yards away. On a warm sunny day, the inside of the Tipi got quite hot and at night on a rather chilly summer evening it was comfortable but a little cold.

A good sized utility tent was set up next to our Tipi so that we could store our other stuff that we bought with us (e.g foldup chairs, bags etc)

The location of the campsite and lodges is wonderful. It is situated just a few seconds walk above Ropley station on the Mid-Hants heritage railway (Watercress Line). In fact, you can access the platform and the station's picnic/play area via a gate behind the shower/toilet block. (You don't need a ticket unless you're actually travelling on the trains). This is great if you're a steam enthusiast but even if you're not, this is a great location for a campsite. There are good views of the surrounding Hampshire countryside. During our visit, the pub in Ropley was closed but Alresford town is a short drive away (4 miles).

The site is easily accessible up a short hill from the main A31 and is signed. There are two Tipi tents; across the road that runs through the site from the Tipis are two luxurious looking Safari tents, which were both occupied on our short visit and wouldn't look out of place on the African savannah. (They're named Annie and Clarabel after the carriages pulled by Thomas the Tank Engine; the Tipi tents, probably due to their impermanence, are unnamed! ).

The pitching area had only one tent despite it being peak season but this campsite was only recently built.

The shower/toilet block is very new and very clean. There is a basic kitchen area with a freezer for ice packs and sinks to clean your pots and pans. The reception block though, was closed throughout our visit with a note stuck to the door saying that as it was new, the owner didn't know what times it could be opened. I suggest that it should be manned at a set period during the day, as peering through the window, it did look well stocked with drinks/snacks and miscellaneous items.

Further up the site are the lodges. They're all painted nicely, with the colours and design blending very sympathetically to that of the railway station below. One of the lodges is very new, having been opened in May this year - according to the plaque - by some guy called Alan Titchmarsh.

We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it for the location and facilities.
