Our first time to Ixtapa, picked this resort because of TripAdvisor ratings and reviews... had an issue on check in, but was not Hotel's fault...was a Sunwing issue...we were told by Sunwing rep that we had a room with a king sized bed, but on check-in, no record of that, we got a room with 2 double beds...oh well, carry on. Everything went well until we had an issue over pool chairs with other guests on second day, we had been sitting in them for 2 hours, and along came a couple that said they were theirs, they became very belligerent!!!... Security did not handle properly... left us pretty dismayed... General Manager stepped in and took control of situation, and turned our experience around for us. After that we had a great week! The staff are all wonderful, they took very good care of us. Met some new friends that really helped enhance our trip, then on our last night we went out for dinner with Pat and Brenda, along with Hector and his family. It was the best night of our trip!!!, Great food, Great conversation, thanks to all. We will most definitely return again!!!

Room Tip: Away from the music from the band.

It's apparent that management has no interest in making changes for the better, as all of the negative things we read before we arrived, still had not been changed. Linda H. from Langley summed it up pretty well, so read her review as well. Here we go:

We are not "foodies", so when we read that the negative reviews of the restaurants, we anticipated going into the little shopping area for dinner most nights. We should have followed our own advice - ok, so the food isn't terrible, but it's just not very good either. Breakfast was fine; you can order bacon and toast from a server, and the egg/omelette station is good. Baked items were the only thing that I could say were excellent. Lunch at El Pescador was again just mediocre, and repetitive. They use poor cuts of meat for the grill station and in the chafing dishes, so you find yourself cutting into grlstle, and/or leaving half your meat on the plate. The snack bar is a joke. For dinner, we thought, "Tex Mex? That should be good, right?". Or on Mexican night, we'd say, "well, they can't screw that up, can they?". Wrong on both counts. After we complained about the reservation system (the regulars use inside connections to book tables before the noon queue), we got into the Italian restaurant... it was better than the buffet, but still nothing special. So take our advice - go eat in town or Zihua... you can always have dessert back at the buffet later.

We were lucky to get a garden view room that was on the "3rd floor" that was almost all the way at the end of the hall. Therefore the A/C units that others complained about were far enough away that we were not bothered by the sound. The room was spotless, and aside from a toilet that doesn't flush well, we had no major complaints. The view faces East, with a pretty good view of the ocean; we learned our lesson with ocean-view rooms before, as they normally face the pool, and get the accompanying noise from there and the bar/disco. The beds are indeed hard, but that's what we've come to expect in Mexican all-inclusives that are ≤ 4 star properties. They have room safes now, but no fridges, which would be nice. Ice machines are only located on 3 floors.

The beach is beautiful, but they need to manage the chairs/loungers better somehow. We saw people who had "reserved" loungers with their towels at 6 am, but didn't come by to use them until after 3 pm! Staff was not will/able to bring out more chairs, and when we asked an attendant, he shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Many are broken or damaged, and the loungers are extremely uncomfortable. Regulars brought/bought air mattresses to make them a little better on the butt.

The WiFi was dodgy everywhere except in the lobby bar area. Unfortunately, when the local band starts up, you can't have a conversation, as the volume is too loud. Moving over to the couches in the lobby doesn't help, as they have them arranged in a way that prohibits group conversation. We went over to the Chill Lounge once, but it was empty - why do they run the music loud and late if no one is in there? Certainly not very "chill".

We were dumb-founded when we met people that said, "We've been coming here for 10 years!", or "this is our 3rd week; normally we come for a month". So here's what could make this mediocre hotel, great:

1. Improve the food - dramatically
2. Get new lounge chairs for the beach
3. Manage/monitor the "towel" squatters
4. Eliminate the "insider booking" for the Italian Restaurant
5. Offer some tacos or something local at the snack bar
6. Re-arrange the furniture in the lobby to facilitate face-to-face conversations
7. Turn the volume down on the lobby bar band
8. Open the El Pescador restaurant for "sunset" dinner
9. Dial back the volume and music style in the Chill Lounge; guest might actually go there
10. Put fridges in the rooms (they don't need to be stocked)
11. Improve the WiFi

In the end, I guess you get what you pay for. We should have listened to our own advice, and eaten out each night, or paid more for an all-inclusive vacation.

Room Tip: Standard "garden-view" rooms have decent ocean view; get one at the end of the hall to avoid the A/C noise.

We are foodies, so here's our review of Park Royal Ixtapa from our perspective. The food is terrible, period. There were 3 restaurants: 2 buffet-style and 1 a la carte, and a snack shack by the pool (burgers, pizza, and tortilla chips). The buffet restaurants weren't open at the same time, so there were no options for breakfast or lunch. The food in the buffet restaurants was never hot enough, and there was little variety. To be fair, they had a different "theme" every night for dinner, but all the food was pretty boring. The one a la cart restaurant required reservations, which were difficult to get if you didn't "know" someone, and the food was only slightly better than the buffet. We only got in once after we kicked up a fuss with our tour rep, which no one should have to do. The beach was beautiful, however, the beach chairs are uncomfortable and most are broken. Pool-side loungers were nicer, but were even more difficult to get unless you like to wake up at 5 am — you have to wake up at dawn to place a towel on a chair you want to reserve, or you're out of luck. Beds are uncomfortable and A/C seemed inadequate; ocean view rooms are noisy because of the party that goes on to 1:30 am every night. Rooms are very clean. Staff were friendly and accommodating. For the price, it seems to be a good value option. Ixtapa and nearby Zihuatanejo were great places to explore. We rented bikes and explored the Ciclopista Ixtapa, which was awesome. We're glad we went because it was affordable for us, however, we won't be back because of the food.
TL;DR
If: 1) If you like to wake up early; 2) food (flavour, variety) is not important to you; 3) you learn the "all-inclusive" tricks (see tips below), you will probably enjoy Park Royal Ixtapa very much!

Room Tip: Bring an insulated tumbler for drinks. Need a pillow for the beach chairs. Get up early (before 7 am) to put a towel on the chair you want.

Again, another trip to Paradise! The new bridge over the pool is a very welcome change & the kiddie pool area is a great addition. Only two small suggestions....a soft-serve ice cream machine might be a welcome addition to the food, which I think has really been upgraded over the years. Another would be the addition of a few more English speaking TV stations. I realize we are in Mexico, but a large part of the guests are American or Canadian. I got really tired of only having 2 stations, both news only, in English - just what we were trying to get away from! Even the subtitles & closed captioning were in Spanish. Overall, another great trip - just as nice as it has been for 15 years!

Again another year in Ixtapa. Spent 2 weeks and had another wonderful time with freinds and family. The pool upgrade was a good welcome as it seemed to keep the kids away from the swim up bar. One suggestion would be that you bring back the waiters on the beach area.Another issue I had last week is that Thomas the waiter mostly on the isle
was let go. I have known this man for many years and he has always been very kind, and attentive to the needs of the tourists! Ihope that administrationwill take a second thought on this. The staff here is one of the reasons why we come with the likes of Carlos,Umberto,Lucas,Ernesto,Victor,Isabel,Orlando,Ceasar, and many many more.A special thanks to security gaurd Isrial as he was very nice and considerate.Again another good year.
