We had a great week in Casa Etta. It has everything you need for a perfect holiday - a garden with a beautiful view over the landscape, a refreshing pool, walking distance to restaurants, bars and supermarket. Many other nice villages a short drive away as well as the mountains with the spectacular lake Fiastra.
We stayed for three weeks with our children aged 10 & 8, and were joined by various relatives and friends who each stayed for a few days at a time.
The villa is set at the top of one of the two high points of the town, and has spectacular views. It is a very comfortable and homely villa, with the bedrooms being large and with comfortable beds, with the living room and dining area having sufficient space for our large party. The kitchen is very well equipped indeed.
Outside, the pool was cold and refreshing, but very well looked after during our stay. The lady & her son who cleaned and changed sheets and towels etc. came in on each day we had a change of guests and so everything ran very smoothly. The garden is not as usable as we had anticipated, in part due to the elevation of the house (a ball over the fence was list down the hill!) whilst the ground wasn't terribly even.
The main village square is just a short walk down a steep slope, and once you understand the hours that the local shops, gelataria and restaurants keep is a great place to relax. The village had two pizza and music in the park festivals while we were there, and provided a great insight into life in this part of Italy.
The Adriatic coast is just under an hour's drive away, and Lago di Fiastra is a lovely mountain lake about 45 minutes drive in the other direction. The towns of Macerata (check out the Sferisterio opera house) and, further away, Loreto, a town of religious significance, are both well worth visiting.
Closer to the villa is an excavated Roman town (Urbano, near Covento) which has an abbey, an amphitheatre and the site of a theatre.
Don't expect to get pizza a lunchtime anywhere as the ovens don't get warmed up until the evening, and the restaurants have a limited range of offering, but the pasta can be excellent.
