Our small group of tourists stopped for the night at the San Carlos Plaza Hotel Resort en route to the Copper Canyon. The luxurious rooms, quiet ambience, spectacular views out over the Sea of Cortez at sunset, and delicious food in the restaurant were enjoyed by all. The complimentary breakfast was delicious. Even better were the huge fresh shrimp dinners we had the evening before.

We have been there 3 0r 4 times, never had our reservations, sometimes an hour wait to locate and check in.
the rooms were minimal, no safe with out a $100.00 deposit, no fridge, check for alcoholic beverages and charged $12.50 per bottle of wine to bring to the room. Cockroaches, improper linens etc. Beautiful ocean view, but will never return

Room tip: good luck, every floor noisy, lots of parties

Old, run down, in terrible shape. Did have a good bed and in a great beach location. Pool was also great. But the hotel main areas and the rooms are just old, shabby and in dire need of renovations. Discoloured grout, cracked sinks, leaky taps, worn, and old. Maybe okay for in and out while traveling, but then it seemed overpriced and out of the way.

Room tip: Sorry it all seemed poor!

What a beautiful hotel, this must have been in its grander days. Don't get me wrong, the hotel is still beautiful, all rooms overlook the beach and the outdoor amenities of the hotel and it is truly a sight to see!
The rooms...very nice and nicely appointed, bed was comfortable and the room went down hill from there. The faucet in the bathroom vanity would only produce a stream of water the size (diameter) of a small pencil and produced NO HOT WATER!
The shower...The faucet handle would revolve 360 degrees and never produced any HOT WATER, if you've never experience a cold water shower, you are in for a treat!
The evening experience in the restaurant was similar to visiting "MALFUNCTION JUNCTION"! Asked for a table for six (6), finally got one, with only five (5) chairs, had to ask multiple times for a chair...finally got one. Had to ask for table settings for the sixth (6th) chair and the same issues applied to getting water for that place at the table.
The Waite staff was grossly understaffed, so service was understandably slow, when we ordered wine, we soon found out there was only one (1) wine opener to be had and only ONE (1) person on staff knew how to operate that piece of equipment, so it took a considerable amount of time to open two (2) bottles of vino.
Once our meals arrived, the Chef's special of fresh fish was excellent and everyone at the table was very pleased with their entree's!
The breakfast buffet was not a buffet, everyone was served the same meal and everything on the plate was COLD, as if it had set for quite some time, before being served. The fresh Orange juice and coffee, were plentiful and very good.
All in all, the hotel is beautiful but grossly understaffed and from the looks of the town, all the closed up buildings, stores, restaurants, etc, which must be a carryover of the drug war days, which drove people away, indicates to me, the tourist crowd has NOT returned to the point the Hotel could afford to staff and make the repairs to return the hotel to its once greatness.

Problems started right on arrival, our reservation had been downgraded considerably, and had to show e-mails with the original reservation information to sort it out. Then they sent us to a room in a section of the hotel with no hall lights, you couldn't even see the rooms numbers, let alone find the key card hole (and even though it was low season and the hotel was pretty much empty, they sent us to this dark section, so maybe punishment for arguing with the front desk?). In this room, the shower had almost no water pressure, and the balcony light did not work, nor was it fixed after several requests; no balcony furniture either, even though some other rooms did have a couple of chairs and a table; other than that, the room was very clean, bed was comfy. Ice machine does not work, and they make you go around trying them all before they give in and send some to your room. Unless you go on a more busy season, there is no bar service at the beach, and can't bring your own cooler either. Customer service otherwise was good, and the one night their sports bar was open it was a nice place to hangout. They offer free wifi but you might get 1 Mbps of speed if you're lucky. The beach is sandy and nice, no palapas available, and is about a 25 min walk to some beach bars. If you're doing lots of stuff in downtown San Carlos this hotel might feel a bit remote. They have a gym, sure, but 2 out of 3 treadmills don't work and the other equipment is old and rusty. Pool area was nice, lobby still looks impressive. This used to be the best a long time ago, but has let itself go.
