Under 10 minute walk to plaza. Quiet, safe location. Lots of light in this sweet, clean studio. We ate breakfast in on most days in useable kitchen. Purified tap water, split bathroom. Responsive owner. Circular stairway to apartment. Might be a bit challenging for some.

“Lovely spot, nice light, great price.”

I stayed in this studio for a month, and the price was good value for San Miguel. ($750/month, with different rates for shorter stays.) It was ideal for me -- I needed reliable, fast internet, somewhere safe and clean and quiet, and with nice light since I knew I'd be spending a lot of time working at home on my laptop while in San Miguel.

The owner is really switched on to how to make guests comfortable. I inquired by e-mail, and she answered quickly. Her booking system is efficient and uses Paypal, and her security deposit it reasonable and was returned promptly on my departure. I took the Bajiogo shuttle in from Queretaro Airport.

In addition to the fast wifi, which was reliable, the studio also had a landline, coffee maker, toaster, all table ware and utensils, a water cooler, microwave, two burners, and mini-fridge with a freezer section. There is a gas fireplace but it was August and I didn't touch it. There was an in-room safe and a television I also did not use. There is a nice skylight and intricate tile work.

Cooling is by ceiling fan, but San Miguel is at altitude and I seldom needed it. Toilet/sink is separate from shower. Nothing leaks and towels are provided. There is a shared roof I never used. I dropped my laundry off down the block as recommended in the in-room information binder, and that service was fantastic and inexpensive, as well as fast.

Be aware that Anthony Quinn studio is a third-floor walk-up, and the stairs are a steep spiral staircase. I live in a 4th floor walk-up at home and this didn't phase me in the slightest, but it you don't like stairs or have a lot of luggage, you might want the downstairs studio. There are three, first, second, and third floors. I asked for Anthony Quinn for the better light.

If you like quiet, these are great, but be forewarned you'll hear all kinds of interesting noises in San Miguel. The gas man plays a song on his rounds much like the ice cream man does at home. Kids scream and play and musicians play too. And wherever you are in San Miguel, you are likely to hear fireworks at strange times of day. Once they started at six in the morning. That only happened the one time though, and it's what people do in SMA. There's no stopping it. Enjoy the local culture.

What's nice about this particular spot on Animas is it's still in colonial downtown, but not in an area solely full or expats or tourists. It's a mixed neighborhood with lots of Mexican families. There's a great little bakery just down the block. It's about two blocks to the artisan's market, which is next door to the fruit and vegetable market. There are food stands in the back of the vegetable market, and IMO, the best buys in the artisan's market are Otomi textiles.

The Bonanza supermarket on Mesones is pretty good, with bulk items in the back, and if you need a bigger supermarket, there is a giant one up the hill near the Tuesday Market. It's in a plaza, like a small outdoor mall, anchored by a department store called Liverpool and the supermarket called Soriana. To get there, you walk to the end of Animas and it turns into Colegio. Where Colegio meets Mesones, look to your left and you'll see jitneys with signs. The signs will say "Soriana" as well as a few other destinations. Get on the first one and confirm but asking "Soriana?" The bus was cheap, the equivalent of fifty cents.

Other jitneys to other destinations, such as the bus station, the Santa Fe Hospital, or the other big supermarket (Mega), are over across from the church on Insurgentes.

The location is also convenient for a quick walk to Via Organica, which has a nice cafe and organic groceries. Prices are reasonable there.

You'll be walking a lot in San Miguel, so bring good shoes for cobblestones. Overall, I had a lovely stay.

Liked best: The owner put in nice touches like guidebooks in the common area, and motion-sensitive lights on the stairs for night.
