Owner description: Jinshanling Great Wall is located in Luanping County, Chengde, Hebei Province, 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of Beijing. It used to be a sound defensive system including barrier walls, battlement walls, watchtowers, gun emplacements, shooting holes, horse blocking walls, and branch cities. Today, it is renowned as the "Paradise of Photographers" and a popular tourist destination because of its magnificent appearance and intoxicating scenery.

Hassle free day trip from Beijing with buss to service area, hop in the free shuttle to the gate. Very few people hike the wall, made the view of the wall and surrounding more enjoyable.
I had a very memorable hike here.
For those who wish to hike for 2days, accomodation is provided nearby.

This section of the great wall is amazing for photography where one can easily get a shot of a long stretch of the wall with no crowd. Some stamina required to hike this section. However do take note that information on the cable car operation provided by onsite staff may not be accurate, bear in mind to factor in more time when planning.

We hiked this part of the Great Wall in early April. Two days earlier it had been unseasonably cold, and we saw the remains of the snow/ice in many places but we had a beautiful day - 18 degree C, blue skies and sun shining. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. It was uncrowded and at times magically quiet until they blared out loud music across speakers (this was rather strange but happened in a few locations in China), but that aside, I would strongly recommend doing a hike on this part of the wall. My husband and I are in our mid 50's and had been doing fitness activities before to be prepared for what is a reasonably strenuous hike, but so worth every moment. I used a guide, Snow Cui who is a local that lives at Jinshanling and he organised a car to pick us up from downtown Beijing - the drive took no more than 2 hours. His website is Great Wall Walk and he was perfect - both friendly, knowledgeable and with great English, allowing us to go at our own pace and enjoy the amazing scenery and the experience of just being there. After, we went back to his guest house where his wife cooked us a simple, but hearty lunch that was delicious, before being returned to Beijing. You really pinch yourself when on the wall and seeing only a maximum of 20 people in the 3-4 hours we hiked the wall, made it especially personal and memorable. Apparently most of the movies are made along this section of the wall due to the scenic beauty and walking the unrestored sections was an additional bonus for us. We saw a cable car, but couldn't image if the weather is good, using it. We made sure we wore good, but light hiking shoes as a good grip is important, but good quality joggers are probably fine. You can purchase drinks, snacks and souvenirs at various locations as you go and it does warm up after you start, so make sure you wear layers. Arguably, one of our best days in China!! Thank you so much Snow, for making it so easy for us to have such an amazing experience!

Did organized walk through Chinahighlights. Well organised, planned and executed. Got there early doors. Very few people, small group. Atmosphere, weather and views were fantastic. Got some excellent pics and exercise :-)
Would thoroughly recommend. Nice section of wall too.

Jinshanling Great Wall was my favourite part of our trip to China. It's well worth the three-hour drive from Beijing to see the incredible views and beautiful surrounding countryside. As regards the difficulty of the walk, I would say it is manageable for anyone who is reasonably active and fit, but would not recommend it for very young children, heavily pregnant women or anyone with joint (especially knee) problems. We walked from west to east. Although most people seemed to walk in the other direction, I would recommend our route as it seemed slightly less strenuous.
