We spent a wonderful 9 days here and enjoyed being catered from the first moment we stepped onto the resort. After an exhausting flight and shuttle transfer, we arrived late in the afternoon and were greeted by staff who took care of our luggage, offered us a comfortable couch, provided a cool towel and a glass of wine. The check-in staff were very friendly and the process was easy and quick.
When booking our vacation, we mentioned that it was our anniversary. There was a special surprise waiting in our room. The staff made a welcome message with flowers and plants on the bed. Plus, there was a chilled bottle of champagne and glasses in the room. All the candles were lit to create a romantic atmosphere when we walked inside. This really shows the extent of the personal attention to detail that is provided by the staff.
The resort is a beautiful, clean and the property is very well maintained. Every day gardeners are cutting grass, trimming the hedges or snipping off dead flowers. The walkways are spotless and no bit of litter anywhere. They pride themselves on cleanliness and it is always apparent.
Our room was large and had a separate shower and dressing room. For privacy, the toilet and a small sink were in the same room as the shower and it had an exhaust fan for the steam. The huge jacuzzi in the room could be removed as it is a waste of water especially when you have pools, hot tubs, and an ocean just steps away.
We had one of the best swim-up room locations as it was close to the bar, beach, coffee shop and restaurants. Our swim-up pool came with loungers and table in the shallow water and another patio set and hammock on the patio. The pool was large enough for swimming or floating on an air mattress. Many evenings we sat on the patio and enjoyed a glass of wine while watching a wedding or other entertainment at the beach. These rooms have their own pool drink service and bar. The pool waiters/waitresses made sure we always had a drink and often suggested the drink of the day. We really enjoyed the swim-up room and would do it again. After staying at both The Royal and its sister Panama Jack Playa, the Royal is well worth the difference in price.
This hotel excels with their service. The staff everywhere are friendly, polite, attentive, happy, and are so willing to help and assist whenever you ask. Some of the staff went above and beyond making this vacation one of the most wonderful times. We were spoiled by the girls that took care of us as our room was always spotless and the towel art amazed us each day. A special thank you to our housekeeper Zenaida Canul and Isabel Gallegos who kept us entertained with her towel creations twice a day. Also, we cannot thank Avi enough for filling our mini-bar with our favourite drinks and treats every day!
There are so many activities to do and restaurants to try that we did not have enough time to do all of them. Concierge services were pleasant and efficient and located in all sections of the resort to help with anything such as dinner or spa reservations. We enjoyed Maria Marie, Viaggio, Asiana and Pelicanos for dinner or lunch as each restaurant served different cuisine. The coconut ice cream was great for dessert. The Coffee House made great milkshakes and cookies; just perfect for an afternoon snack by the pool.
The El Mediterraneo was our favorite breakfast and dinner restaurant. The selection was outstanding at the breakfast buffet and we filled up for our daily adventures. The staff at Mediterraneo made our stay exceptionally memorable: Rebeca, Fernando, Julio, Rigo, Fredy Rouirez, Mario Hernandez, Franciso “Paco Loco”, Jose De la Guz, and Yaret De la Guz. Special thanks to Rebeca and Chef Fernando who made churros for us. Thank you to all the staff that I may have missed their names.
The Royal really goes out to provide different daily events and evening shows for the guests. During the afternoons we enjoyed the wine tasting, tequila tasting, and martini tasting. The best event was the Chocolate Party one evening, where everything was chocolate and edible. The evening entertainment was live music provided by violinist, electric-cello, or a Mexican fiesta on some nights. The late show was high quality with such shows as Circus, Cabaret, or Latin music and dancers.
There is a lot of activity around the main pool area during the day and it does get very noisy. The Saturday Foam party was the highlight of our trip. The pool entertainers were great and they got everyone from 18 to 78 into the pool for dancing & playing with noodles. The entertainers were energetic and got people cheering and dancing. A few times we went to the tranquil pool by the Coffee House but the number of loungers and cabanas is limited due to the smaller size of the pool. The swim up rooms are mostly quiet and peaceful as the loud parties and activities take place in the large pool area in the main courtyard. The service around the pool was so good and drinks were brought to us regularly with a friendly smile.
Access to the beach cabanas, loungers and water is easy. There is a towel dispenser & water taps for rinsing sand off your feet at the walkway. We spent a lot of time at the beach and relaxing in a cabana, as there were always some available during the afternoon.
The Royal is located two short blocks away from 5th Avenue, which is known for its restaurants and shopping centers along with authentic Mexican shops. 5th Avenue is full of tourists and many shop keepers trying to get you into their shops, even by saying they are your “waiter” from the Royal. They know the different colours of the resort wristbands. It is a perfect location to walk out and see the town and we felt very comfortable wherever we went. We were lucky this time to see the Carnival parade which started on the street beside the Royal.

Room Tip: The swim up pool rooms are quiet, have view of the Caribbean Sea, have dedicated waiters for drink service, close to the beach.

My client was floored after arriving at this beautiful resort. She told me that it was better than what the pictures showed. The views were impeccable and she couldn't wait to get checked in fully to send me a pic. Upon check in she ran into an issue with her rooms. She had her 30th bday bash there along with several of family members and friends and there was a small mixup on the rooms (it was during peak travel time which could be normal) Before my client could spazzed out she text me as I instruct ALL my clients. If they run into an issue to tell me right then. Before I could call the hotel to rectify the issue she was sending me text messages of pics of her room. She had extras in her room such as rose pedals spelling out her name on the bed and chocolate covered fruit on her desk with a note apologizing for the mixup. The head manager gave her the personal cell phone just in case she ran into any problem and her guest rooms were upgraded. If you are nice I tell my clients these four and five star resorts will do their best to accommodate you and make up for what they may call small errors and mishaps. I appreciate you all for making her bday celebration extra special and one of a kind. She told me that you even made sure that they had adequate seating at restaurants when they scheduled their dining times and they had no waits. They enjoyed the food choices and ALL the restaurants and entertainment. You all are the BEST at what you do and I appreciate you.

Room Tip: Be nice and you may get whatever you want.

If a no stress, no hassle, worry free resort if what you are looking for...The Royal is it. The grounds are very well maintained, you wont find a better staff and we as self proclaimed "food snobs" did not have one meal that wasn't awesome. 2 pools allow you to either relax in peace or be a part of the fun. The bar next to the pool puts out great drinks at a fast pace. The swim-up bar is ok, its usually in the shade and the water is cooler there. The beach isnt great but they try. There is just too much seaweed. Also, avoid Panama Jacks, the sister resort next door. Very subpar food, not great service and tons of kids. From check-in to check-out and everything in between, we were thrilled with our stay at the Royal and hope to be back soon.

Entire staff was friendly and ready for service. Chef Pastor, manager Diego, Hostess Georgina, waiter. Ahmed and Mosso. Excellent at their jobs.
Bar/restaurant near the beach/pool was our favorite. Tacos were perfect and plentiful. Remodeling was going so should be better ambience by now. Again that lunch staff was very good. Salute to the bar tender !
Rooms large and comfortable
Also enjoyed the nightly dancers/music they were quite talented.
Found the spa service late in the trip—would take advantage of that more often next time —although Less expensive massage available in town.

Room Tip: Personal pools were much quieter same service though
