My daughter and went for a week during her spring break and we had a wonderful time. We were just looking for a sun and water. I found this gem myself when I was looking for a place that was on the beach around that area and not a large hotel building. We stayed at the Select Club area that has its own pool and offers everything that Caracol offers but like for example the S.C. area has its own building on the beach with free internet ( took my laptop and used it too) the internet is a bit slow but good enough to check emails. It also has its own bar and they put food out inside all day to snack on. Bathrooms and showers, pool table and lounge area, own beach chairs and a waiter that comes around all day and offers you drinks........so you don't even have to go to the bar and get them if you don't want.
The S.C. section is farther back and there is some walking but we loved that. If you stay at the Caracol section you could be on the beach but that main pool is always so busy and its very noisy there, but if you like that then go for it. There is an adults only pool and of course the one for the kids(Aquapark)
If one has kids the kids club and aquapark is great. They have donkeys and deer and coatis (that one can feed) and are nocturnal so you see them at night time and also cats they feed and one can too.
They have movies every night and put on shows. We did not see all of them but the Fire and Water one was great, a must see.
The buffets have everything one would desire and the a la carte restaurants that one has to reserve are worth it too. We went to only two of them the Mediterranean(good) and the Oriental(excellent)
The beach in front of the hotel is not the greatest, its has alot of coral but you can walk on it and they have those famous huge whale looking things they fill with sand that keep the waves down a bit but alot of people love to sit on them and play on them too. We went for a walk to the left (away from Playa del Carmen) and found a section of beach that was just beautiful to swim on, sandy and no coral. It was maybe a 15 min. walk and sure worth it!! Great area to snorkel and you can borrow all that kind of stuff for free also boogie boards and katamarans and kayaks, just check it out.
There is a bus you can take everyday to Playa del Carmen for free and you can come back too. The last one leaves Playa at 5:00. So you can go and shop all day and I would suggest taking your towel and going to that beach.........its just beautiful, white sand, no rocks and nice waves. We ate at one of the restaurants on the beach and the food was great.
I could go on with more details but that should give you an idea.
I have some pictures I could put but I've been having trouble trying to add them onto this page as this is my first time writing a review, sorry. But just google the place and you will see all kinds of pictures. I see that some people did not enjoy the place, I say "nothing in life is ever perfect" and " You can't please everybody".
Remember we stayed at the Sandos Select Club section (you get a gold bracelet) so I don't know about the Caracol section (blue bracelet, that I noticed) Meaning our check in was at another location and I cannot comment on the rooms there either. The outside of the buildings were all the same though and the place was all kept just immaculate.
