I spent a lot of time before my trip reading reviews of this resort from this site. Of course they all vary, but I thought I would add my thoughts since I really paid attention to common concerns on here before I left. First off - this really is an eco resort. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you will have no issue with this resort at all. As in, if you "think" you do the outdoors because you go camping in your $60,000 camper and to a campground that is immaculate with running water and sewer that may not be as eco as you think.
Yes, the very first thing you smell when you get out of the taxi is donkey and farm. Because, the petting zoo is right behind the front desk. Better than right outside your room window. Yes, there are parts of the resort that stink like rot. That's because that's what swamps actually smell like, and there are swamps on resort, and they are actually quite beautiful if you appreciate the true outdoors. There are a few mosquitos, but I seriously never wore bug spray and ended up with like 10 bites. I think again this depends where you live and how many mosquitos you're usually exposed to.
The Food: The food was adequate. We all found plenty to eat that we liked. We did spend one day at Playacar and the buffet was way better, but the food here was not as horrible as some said, but not stellar. Just good.
The Beach: Yes, there was quite a bit of rock/coral in the water making it hard to swim. But again, we spent one day at Playacar and the beach was HUGE, long, busy, busy, busy and LOUD. Caracol is more intimate and I never had issue finding a spot to sit. There is a great spot to the far left to swim with very little coral. And don't be fooled, Playacar had WAY more seaweed on it's beach than Caracol did the day we went. Way more.
Rooms: Upgrade is a must. I read this and it's true. We had an Eco-Superior room. We were close to everything, room was nice and clean. Our friends had the standard room and regretted it. It's VERY standard and far from everything.
Waterpark: I read reviews of people having issue with siblings not allowed on the same slides due to size. This is true- to some extent. They are really sticky on the rules of the slides, but all of our kids - ages 7-14 were allowed in the kiddie pool to play. So, they did get to play together, just not slide together.
We went on Spring Break, the busiest time of the year I'm sure and I loved this resort. It's so spread out, and the layout doesn't allow for 1000 people to be all crammed in to one area. I never felt crowded out. Also, a benefit was at this time that all restaurants, and all water slides were up and running.
The staff was awesome and I highly recommend this resort. From our experience if you truly do appreciate outdoors and nature you will have no issue with the resort.

Room Tip: Upgrade is a MUST - even just to Eco Superior

Dear Skcanada2018,

We are glad to know that you had a great time staying at Sandos Caracol. We would like to thank you for taking your time to write such a nice review on Trip Advisor.

We feel very happy that you have enjoyed our concept of "All Nature Experience".

As you mentioned it is a different and unique concept where our visitors have the opportunity to feel immersed in an environment surrounded by nature and wildlife and we are happy to know that this has been the case with your beloved family.

About the water park, we always suggest our guests to read the guidelines, which are based on height and not on ages, this with the purpose of guaranteeing the safety and enjoyment of all our guests.

We appreciate your recommendations about the type of room for future travelers we are sure will help them a lot.

Once again thank you very much, we truly hope to have you back soon and have the opportunity to appreciate our improvements thanks to your valuable contribution

Sincerely,

As a family of four, we were all happy with the choice of Sandos Caracol Eco Resort for our spring break destination. The kids loved the abundance of animal sightings (monkeys, coates, racoons, cats, a mini farm) as well as the water slide, pools and beach snorkelling. Personally, I really liked that the emphasis on 'Eco' was not simply in name, but also in practice. Not only did you feel like you were in the jungle, poised on the edge of a tropical beach (we were) but the use of re-usable plastic cups, biodegradable bug repellant and care of animals underlined this resort's dedication to sustainability and the environment.

The part that seemed like an inconsistency however, was the heavy emphasis on meat in all but the one vegetarian restaurant. The vegetarian restaurant was good, however a bit fussy/fancy and the portions were a little on the small side (especially when finding non-buffet veg fare was such a challenge). Further, when we went to any other non-buffet restaurant, there was a choice of seafood, chicken or meat. I ended up eating off the kids menu - pasta and tomato sauce - at each of those restaurants, each night.

The accommodation we were in was a little tired as we got one of the older units - I'd suggest asking for a newer phase room if you can. They looked really nice. I did comment to the staff about the pushy photographers, but there wasn't a lot to criticize beyond that and the meat-centric menu options. It was a nice break from architecture-driven resorts, with the focus on nature and low-key relaxation.

We had a great time here. The food was OK, and sometimes, around noon, it was hard to find somewhere to get more than an ice cream, but the vegan restaurant was wonderful. That was the best of all the food.
Miguel, who took us on a bird walk, was the best feature of the whole place. All the days that we were there, he was willing and ready to lend me his bird book and ask questions. It would have been nice to have a bird walk of more than just an hour and go through all the resort- the bird sanctuary, the jungle, and the beach, but as there was only me and my son on the walk, I gather it isn't the most popular feature of the resort.
I appreciate things they do to help the environment- not using straw, recycling cups. In fact, we have stopped using straws at home now and just bought some metal ones.
All in all, a nice trip. I would not want to stay at an all-inclusive that was any less eco-friendly.
