We spent 5 nights in June at Sandos and had a great time. As with most resorts there were great things and not so great things. My family has a house near Playa and I have been to several resorts in the area. We chose this resort for the children's amenities.

Royal Elite Oceanfront Superior room: Beautiful, clean new rooms in building 1. Negative was the entire area behind this building is under construction but you really cant hear it very much. Our patio opened out towards the pool and the location was great. Building 1 is near the kids side of the pool which is shallow. It is far enough away from the area where they do the activities that the noise didnt bother us. We had two adjoining rooms. One room had a king bed, living room with couch, 2 bathrooms with double sinks and walk in showers. Huge TV, closet, minibars and bottled water. Watch out only Pepsi products which we hate. Beer is great XX is our favorite. They say the room comes with liqour bottles, never brought it but we took some off a cart. These rooms were seriously georgous and I would definately choose this again, the location cannot be beat. A lot of other rooms seemed old and very far away. If you upgrade to Royal Elite you also get access to the adult only area which we never went to and the adult only beach club. We went to the adult beach area a lot. It was clean and quite and the beach beds were great and always able to find one. A waitress brought drinks and the bar had higher end labels. BUT the catch 22 is that you cannot bring kids here. So we took them to the kids club. Kids club was great, kids loved it but they didnt tell us that the beeper they give you doesnt work on the beach. We obviously went steraight to the adults only beach as soon as we dropped them at club. On our 2nd day we returned to find our 2 year old hysterical. They had been trying to page us but couldnt becuase we were at the beach. Our son refused to go back after that so we couldnt use the adult only amenities that we paid more to get. When I pointed this out they said I could come back every 30 minutes to check (10 min walk each way!). This seriusly needs to be fixed and they MUST tell people the pagers don't work at the beach.

Kids club- kids loved it until my son got upset and they couldn't reach us. Negative is that it is all inside, no kids pool. If your child is 5 or more, you can sign up for them to leave kids club on trips. You must arrive 1 hour before the scheduled activity. They take them on nature walk, to waterpark, scavenger hunt on beach etc. No food or snacks in club so you have to pick them up to eat. Hours for 2-4 yr are 10-1 and 3-6. Overall it was ok. I have been to other hotels where they feed them and have a kids pool and movies at night which my daughter loved. They do have a kids play one night but it isnt until 8:30 and my kids go to sleep around that time.

Beach- By far the most negative part of this resort. If I had not just spent 10 days at a beautiful beach at another location I would have been very upset. We didnt go in the water at all. I have been coming to this area for 15 years and this is the worst beach I have been to. The sand is white but it is a different texture than other sand in the area. There are plenty of beach chairs because NOBODY is on the beach except in the adult only section, everyone just stays at the pool. It is not just a little rocky, the bottom is 1/3 rock. The sandbags keep the seaweed in and the water is cloudy and dirty. It does not have the beautiful clear, blue look of other beaches in the area. From my experience the beaches south of Playa are better. Playacar and Tulum have great beaches. This would probably keep me from coming back again becuase for me this is a huge part of the trip.

Pools were Ok, seemed over crowded and a little murky, not as big as other pools at resorts this side. kids loved the waterpark. It was reallyh nice and clean and perfect for my 2-5 year old.

Food- buffets were ok. usually breakfast is my fav at resorts but here it was not. Except for the fresh crepes and one day they had a huge vat of hot nutella. A la carte restaurants were best I've had, especially the asian restauant, it was really great. They were all very beautiful and either AC or open air with ocean view. Kids menus at all. Anoher perk of RE is as many a la carte reservations as you want.

Room Tip: Royale Elite is worth it don't come without it.

My wife and I recently stayed here for 7 days for our 2 year anniversary and had a lot of fun. The resort grounds and beach are very nice and well maintained. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. The Mayan themed entertainment was wonderful, and this was one of my favorite parts of the resort. The staff was very helpful in scheduling excursions to Chichen Itza and Tullum - a must see for anyone traveling to the Yucatan. The food was just ok, and I was a little disappointed. All in all, this is a great place to travel if you're looking for a fun vacation for a good value. It is important to note that we felt as if we were in a safe location the entire time, and had no issues with safety in any aspect of our trip.

Room Tip: We stayed in the basic room in building 25 and it was nice, quit, and clean.

This is my first and last visit to SC, after several happy vacations we spent in Riu and Iberostar.
After reading hundred reviews we decided to stay in SC, based on good reviews from the families w/little kids.
We are family of 4 -me, my husband and 2 kids 4 and 7-stayed there for 2 weeks from June 3-16 .
Resort is very big and plenty of things to do.
1 week was good-we enjoyed beach, pool, kids club and Aqua park.
2 week -troubles are started- everyone suffered by having stomach problems and going to the restroom each 15 min .and the worst part -my little son got terrible skin infection all over the body, especially his foot and mouth .even before my son was infected we discuss w/other couple which little son had same symptoms and been diagnosed by local doctor as "sun allergy",vs our emergency rm. doctor in NYC who right away stated that is a skin infection.
So, families with little kids, be aware what you can go through.

Been back a few days and now over our jet lag so here's some thoughts on Sandos Caracol.
As others have said the room decor and furnishings are due for an update but ours were spotless and cleaned every day. We are early risers so by putting the "please make up room" sign on the door handle a lot of the time the room was cleaned for our return from breakfast. We did have an mishap where we spotted a leak coming out of a cupboard outside our room one day. Kids upstairs had left a tap on. One call to reception and it was dealt with within ten minutes.
We stayed in block 34 , ground floor, this we felt was ideal for buffets , restaurant and the splash park etc.Go nearer to the cenote and you would get noise from the disco at night.
All pools were cleaned to perfection , even a young guy in the pool during the day scrubbing and wiping down the walls of the pool a couple of times a week. The bar service at the kids pool was excellent. We don't usually eat burgers or such like but on getting our daughter one on the day before we left, i have to say it was cooked to order and of very good standard. In the 24 hour snack bar they are cooked and kept hot not something i would chance.
As others have said animals etc everywhere. There are signs saying please don't feed them but still some do ! A shame as it encouraged the coatis and raccoons to sneak in for leftover food at the snack bar at night.
The service and food choice is superb. We found the med restaurant on the beach to be excellent. Good choice , great steak and perfect views. One thing we did find bizzare was a couple having a "romantic" special dinner on the beach under a specially lit up pallapa whilst young kids were running around and doing as kids do staring at the couple. Not my idea of romance but hey each to thier own. All buffets have an enormous range of food and very freshly prepared. We preferred the Laguna for brakfast as it was cooler, less busy and had a great waiter in Jose. He looked after us very well and was a genuine nice young lad. We only had one bad meal and that was at the steak restaurant, el gaucho ?, poor service and poor steak . The Brazillian is good but we were over faced after the second or third choice of meat , great setting also. The Chinese was ok and our friends loved it but we eat chinese a good few times a month and unfortunately we found it average.
The resort is looked after to a very good degree and the grounds are immaculate. I made a point of taking cold drinks out of the fridge/mini bar for the gardeners everytime they were anywhere near our room. They were grateful for some cold refreshment in what was a very hot fortnight we were there.
The Xcallacco shows are well run and really interesting. Quite spectacular in parts. Get mozzed up though as miss one area and you will get bit ! Mozzie repellent available everywhere , make sure you use it is all i can say. It's a trade off in my opinion, jungle setting but jungle problems, ie a lot of mozzies in some parts of the resort. Don't let this put you off though as these shows are really interesting and well presented. One in a arena of sorts even had food and drink served before during and after the show ! The kids loved the pre show pinata games.
A couple of minor downsides but nothing too bad.
You will get pounced on for a welcome breakfast but we simply said sorry we are too tired after a long flight to discuss this and we didn't get bothered again.
The other minor downside is no kettle for an early morning drink in the room. We even tried to buy one in Walmart in PDC but they only had coffee percolators. Not good for tea drinking brits.
The resort is a very long way from the highway so it's taxi only for transport out to anywhere. Other resorts we have been to we have enjoyed using collectivos to get around. Easier to spot something , get off and get the next one along.
The on site shop is expensive for goods as is the market that sets up once a week on a Wednesday. We found Mercardo 28 in Cancun the best place. You could bargain well there. We also went to the artisan market at Puerto Morelos. This was good but limited in choice. Worth supporting as the people there had workshops out back and did produce some of the goods theirselves. It's a nice relaxed little village.
For our trips we used Filiberto Pech Hu, a local cab driver with a nine seater clean modern car. His email fphtaxiplya@hotmail.com , his moble/ cell number is (044) 984 131 12313. Will take you on tours or simply deliver you where you want to go and either wait or return for you. Tell him you heard about him from Vinny from Manchester. A nice guy , not pushy and looked after us well.
Previously a fan of GBP but Sandos Caracol will take some beating. Enjoy your hols and i hope this review has been useful.

Room Tip: Away from the cenote but near the splash park was good for most things. Block 34.

Dear Guest,

On behalf of Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa, I would like to send my warm regards and thank you, for taking the time to post this kind review about our hotel.

I am very glad to know that you and your family had a great time during your stay.
We are very glad to know that our facilities were to your liking, and that our hardworking staff exceeded your expectations. Your regards will be extended to Jose.

Like you did mention, our animals are an important part of our ecological facilities, and indeed many guests do ignore our multiple signals against their feeding, this encourages the animals to roam around the snack areas.

Rest assured that all your positive criticism will be taken into account for the further improvement of our hotel and its services. By the time you return you will find many changes that will surely enhance your vacation experience.

We look forward to having you and your family with us during your next visit.

Kindest Wishes,
