i stayed here with my husband for 2 weeks in june 2011 and this is a really good place to stay, clean, friendly and helpful staff and the food's excellent the buffet was always good with something for everyone, never had any problem booking into any of the other resturants which were also of a very good standard. no problem getting bar drinks as they had plenty of staff working in the evenings.this hotel is right on the beach and it is one of the best beaches i've ever seen, never any problems with locals selling things on the beach. I can't really find much to fault this hotel on but if i wanted to be picky i'd say that the room decor is a little dated, but how much time do you spend in your room on holiday anyway? it was not an issue for us. i would definately stay at a riu hotel again.

Room Tip: there are no lifts in this hotel but thats because its only 3 floors high. if you do have any mobili...

I will never again go to this hotel since we were constantly bothered by the terrible exhaust odour and the noise of jet skies and power boats manoeuvring at high speed close to us at the beach. Quite few passengers at the airport stated that they had switched from Riu in Playa Carmen due to the nuisance of these machines. Unlike other hotels, this one has no shade shelters at the beach other than tall coconut trees so you may be over-exposed to sun.
Mexicans are nice, pleasant, helpful and have an excellent sense of humor. Immigration formalities were quick and Cancun’s airport service was far more efficient than Montreal airport which is one of the worst I have ever seen anywhere.
Don't be fooled with quoted price to rent a car at Cancun airport which you find on the internet. It excludes insurance which costs almost twice as much as quoted price for the rental itself. I was told that I could not use my credit cards or my own car insurance.
The food at the buffet was below average and considerably deteriorated during our one week stay, with a poor choice of cold cuts , dairy products and specially sea food. Unlike à la carte steak house, the Asian à la carte restaurant was more acceptable. Personnel and servers are nice, polite and efficient in every aspect . Beverages were generously abundant.
Hotel rooms were clean and well looked after but ocean-view rooms are non- existent as rows of building are perpendicular to the beach and quite close to each other with trees blocking the view. Strangely enough, the ocean side of building blocks has no windows.

Room Tip: The 7000 building block was close to reception and quiet.

What a holiday :)

We were not happy with the first room they gave us as it smelled a bit musty. Changing it was no problem. We ended up with a suite.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on an upper floor as some of the ground floor ones can smell a bit musty. The sui...

767 planes are roomy and comfy the 11 hour flight there was on time and quite pleasant. The immigration at cancun air port was a nightmare and took 2 hours to get through they basically can't cope with the volume of flights and it was chaos everyone i spoke to had the same trouble what ever day they arrived .The transport to the hotel 45 mins and fine. Check in at hotel quick 5 mins, the room are a little dated compared to other riu's and our smelt musty(caused by air con been on all the time while room unoccupied) but soon clears. The rest of the complex was top notch, good food plenty of choice alchol wise too and good themed restaurants apart from mexican which was naff, they do better in the buffett restaurant. evening entertainment as usual so so, pool side events are very popular sometimes a bit noisy. The beach was fab as was the sea. Took a walk to playa del carmen 20 mins through a suprisingly affluent avenue with hotles and villas tami back it about £3 its a good half day excursion, went on 2 trips to chitin itza and coba both good value and a great day out. we really enjoyed our hol the weather was amazing. would we go back deffo !.
a quick pro and con for you.

cons. immigration its a mare sorry, rooms are a tad worn, the mexican restraunt yuk, and the exit tax to leave mexico £42 each a bit pricey if you ask me.

pros. food, drink, beach, sea, pool, waether, trips out, a special mention the staff whatever their job, are wonderful and can't do enough for you .

Room Tip: ground floor rooms are musty at first, blocks 7 8 and 9 futher away from every where but are quiet.

Its been 3 weeks since we got home from Mexico and usually I do my reviews pretty quickly. I have mixed feelings about the Riu Yucatan which has lead to my delay in writing this.
I was really torn between giving an average or very good rating. There's been alot written about this hotel so I'll be brief and honest.
Thomson flights were good and we had no problems or delays at Cancun airport.
We had room 8311 which suited us as it was top floor in a quiet block at the front of the hotel grounds. There was were the quiet ends. The hotel is huge and very busy. No chance of finding a quiet corner to sunbathe or a quiet table for 2 at dinner. We thought the room facilites were good and found the beds comfortable.
I don't usually go to welcome meetings or use the reps but I did on this occasion. Kia and Mayeli were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable.
Hotel grounds and beach are clean, staff are always sweeping and gardening. Nice beach, just too busy for us. Round the pools was even worse - packed like sardines.
Food was fairly good. Breakfasts were very good - especially the cakes! Had lunch a couple of times in the poolside restaurant. Usually went for pizza (and salad) when it was put out fresh - was put off any of the hot food as it's not covered and I saw flies on it. We made full use of the speciality restaurants. Had to queue at 7am to book but it was worth it. The steakhouse was the best (and most popular) - ate there 3 times. The asian (chinese) was excellent too. The most disappointing was the Mexican. I had hoped for some spice and real mexican food - it was the blandest food ever.
The entertainment we did see was very good. Micheal Jackson show is a "must see". Always lots of games and activities to do in the day if thats your thing.
We went on the Coba Mayan trip which was good, a nice mix of local culture, history and a bit of swimming in a Cenote. We also took the ferry to Cozumel. One way cost 156 peso each. Disappointed once we got there - to much hassle was people selling trips, bike/car hire and shop staff. We had one night in Playa Del Carmen - taxi was 70 pesos one way. Nice for a change of scenery.
On reflection, Riu Yucatan was not for us, too busy, and after struggling to recover from the jet lag/time difference I don't think we'll return to Mexico.
