“Beautiful as ever”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

We recently returned from our week at Avalon Reef and fell in love again at the beauty and charm of this idylic little island. We are timeshare owners at Avalon, and yes as other reviewers have stated, things have gone "downhill" somewhat, but you can't beat the beauty, serenity, friendliness, and charm of this place and the island of Isla Mujeres. We had the same problems as many others, no lamps in the room,no microwave, hard mattress, a toilet that whistled, AC that worked sporadically, but everything was fixed within minutes of us reporting the problems. All the staff, from housekeeping to the front desk staff to maintenance and the wait staff were very friendly with an Hola whenever they saw us. Sara Torres was always available should we need her. Yes the property isn't the Ritz, but who wants the Ritz on Isla, not me!! The water is to die for,and the beach at Avalon is great. They try very hard to maintain it daily and do an excellent job. The food at Kelly's bar is fantastic, as good as any on the island. Try the tacos or Ceviche, excellent. And if you're lucky, you may get to play Bingo while you eat.The villas all have beautiful views and our houskeeper was wonderful, making animals for the bed and flowers in the room. I will return again and again, without hesitation, to this little piece of paradise. Now the island of Isla itself is a beauty. Rent a golf cart and tour the island, get to know it's people who are fantastic. The restaurants are wonderful, the town is an easy and safe walk from Avalon day or night. The music at the different restaurants is fantastic, different every night. I can't say enough about this little bit of heaven on earth.

Room Tip: The villas offer great views. Carribbean side, crashing waves and sunrise. The quiet side sunset and...

Not that the place is falling apart but it is a bit tired. Rooms are spartan without a single comfortable chair to sit in. On the other hand the staff is friendly and the location on its own little island exceptional.

It's true, the Avalon Reef club could be much more than it is. Don't know how you could possibly find a better location for the price. Only Avalon guests are allowed on the property. Snorkeling is fantastic. A shallow bay next to the hotel is full of fish, and is perfect for first time snorkelers. For the more experienced, the point that extends out from the end of the hotel is very good. Many soft corals and fan corals. Saw box fish, barracudas, small rays, star fish, and many other different kinds of fish. The hotel room itself is no frills. In the U.S. it would be about $50 a night. No fridge, loud ac unit, tv from the 80's (could plug my cameras into it) genrally outdated. I didn't go there to sit in the room, so it didn't bother me.

The hotel was on a great location! The beds were harder than plywood I will be bringing an air mattress if I go here again. The service is very slow and don't seem to care much about their customers. Wifi is 15$ U.S a day if it isn't down Which is crazy. The hotel is very run down I think they will close soon as one of the taxis or cars will drop threw the bridge going to the island. The hotel staff are RUDE! However the location is top notch. Check out my full review at http://www.zoominfocus.blogspot.com/

Room Tip: Go for a villa they are the best and the sweet on the tower if they allow you to rent them.

Couple 45 yrs of age in Isla for a destination wedding. Most of the wedding party was staying at Ichel Hotel but we elected to stay at the Avalon Reef for 1/2 the price.

The rooms: small and had a portable air conditioning unit that was somewhat loud. We actually found this as a comfort because it would drowned out the plumbing noises and hotel activity (we like to sleep in). The beds are hard but we read other reviews and like firm beds. I was told that the Ichel beds were also hard. Bring amenities because they are not generous about leaving them in the rooms. One water and one decaf coffe was all that we recieved. Had to gather a few more soap/shampoos off the cart but the maid service was friendly. Showers were average and up and down volume/temp. Toilet sometimes needed a few flushes. This was common throughout the island though. We commonly would also slide key card in the door lock until our auto lock would actually open the door jamb. TV's are old and only one english channel but we only had it on briefly so not important to us. The rooms were cleaned effeciently daily.

The grounds: We did not have a villa but the tower activity was not overwhelming. Tried to upgrade to a villa but they were "unavailable" though they seemed quiet in the area. Staff were doing quite a bit of maintanence. I thought it could wait until an off peak season but I didn't know the urgency need. They were replacing a railing near Kelly's bar and so breakfast was noisy with saws and pounding. They were also doing plumbing and were gracious enough to turn the water off from 1200 am until 0600 am but you could hear the work (unless air was on). Otherwise the grounds were kept clean. Many little things did not work which seemed like a quick fix to me. Painting would do amazing work to upgrade many parts of the grounds but it is weathered. Remember your in Mexico not Las Vegas.

Staff: not many english speaking staff outside the front desk. Bartenders and servers were even struggling with communication and this resulted in a few missed orders. I was ok with it because it is a second language. They work hard but are spread thin. Even on days when breakfast was busy they had two staff in the bar/breakfast buffet and hard to keep up. They were all friendly and when asked for tables, beach chairs, etc. they would take care of it.

The beach: Selling point of the Avalon. Not that it is immaculate but over looking the bay and seeing all the "activity" on the other side and the quietness of Avalon was a welcome sight (relative to Playa Norte area) but still had high occupancy so not a quiet haven. The only members on the beach are Avalon guests, no pedlars or "public." You could move your chairs to get a good view. At Ichel and other hotels near Playa Norte the beaches were so cramped and faced north so it was hard to move chairs with the sun. The hotels near downtown are usually connected to the public beaches unlike Avalon Reef which was private but a quick walk to Playa Norte. Most of the Ichel guest with kids in our party were found on the beach across from our hotel due to the beach room compared to Playa Norte and great snorkling was available. (kid warning) The Playa Norte is topless but few participated. I did see some topless on Avalon's beach including one in our party but it was far more private and less invasive. You could almost go unoticed at Avalon but in the thick of things at Playa Norte so pick your option.

Ocean: Beautiful and the colors are amazing! The benefit of the Avalon is your 100 yards away from the beach on one side and on the other side is quiet chairs set up to watch the waves pound off the rocks. Nothing like this with the Playa Norte hotel area, they have the beach and you have to walk blocks through town to the boardwalk to get this site. At the Avalon you could literally get off the beach walk a minute and see the waves pouding against the shoreline. The Kings Pond was small but a fun and safe area for you and kids to snorkel and adults can wander out further. Fun for an evening swim too :) There are also many fish under the boardwalk.

The Island! If you walk or cab you will get to know it quick. A cab driver can take you around the first night and show you all the downtown area for 5-10 dollars. Or....explore and walk alot like we did. The island shuts down early compared to my history of other Mexico early morning activities, but if you look there are late night clubs *(we didn't). Most of the common eateries close around midnight but Hildago (maim street) is a hopping area. The food was found to be good. Due to the reviews we ate away from the Avalon but did have a nice Valentine's Day dinner on the beach. We had an American breakfast plan and if you like a quick (eat where your at before you head out) breakfast then it is perfect. Not much variety but an omlet/pancake cook and most veggies, fruit and breads to satisfy a start to the day.

Overall: I would stay at the Avalon again over the hotels in downtown Playa Norte area due to its location. It is an amazing property with so much potential but they need to work on getting it up to speed for those who place high value on the hotel. We don't....it is a place to sleep. Privacy on this side of the island in peak season is a luxury and the Avalo was the closest I seen to the south side where the more private hotels are but a cab ride/golf cart away from downtown and higher priced.
