My wife and I travel extensively. We are youngish and active and enjoy better accommodations. Not really frond of the over-the top country club feel of four seasons type resorts. We loved our four days and 3 night at Presidente at. The resort is 10-15 minute cab ride from the airport, 3 miles south of the southernmost cruise pier and has 24 hour security at the gate to enter. There was talk from some folks that this facility had been hit hard by the last big hurricane, but they must have rebuilt this understated beauty with greater detail than ever because we saw no signs of wear and tear.

We chose the "reef" rooms for their beach front location so we could hear the ocean from our room-we could. The room was well appointed with robes, wonderful bath amenities, safe, fully stocked mini bar and large flat screen tv. Free Wifi worked everywhere on the resort. When we checked in, the desk agent asked if we would like to upgrade to the reef suite for 1/2 the difference to the suite's price. Nice of them to ask actually, but we opted to stay on our budget. In our room, and this entire section, we had our own hammock on our porch. We used it and the palapa/chaise lounges 10 feet in front of out room often. Simply raise a flag at your palapa and a waiter comes in a few minutes.

The grand palapa roof restaurant is where we ate breakfast (good buffet) each morning. It's right on the ocean and a great place to wile away the hours if you'd like to avoid the rain, which we did the last day of our trip. The waitstaff is incredibly attentive and exceptionally well-trained and nice. We also ate at the Alfredo's Italian restaurant on site as well. It was exceptional. Incredible wine list and homemade pasta that was as good as any you'll find in the states or Italy.

We also did a couples massage at the Spa. Facilities great, options creative and priced appropriate to this resort. We loved it. Great steam room and waterfall seated tub. Sweat room available with a shaman leader that will get smoke in your eyes and make you right with the world(we didn't do that treatment though).

We did manage to get off property and ate at Pepe's grill one night (great dinner) and rented a car from the Thrifty desk at the Presidente and spent Saturday rounding the island, ate at Coconuts and stopped at nice beaches on the East side of the Island to relax and drink a beer.

We were at the resort at the beginning of low season, which meant it was 25% full maybe. Just a guess, but we could say that the way the place is laid out, there are so many places to find your own palapa or beach chair or just dive into the water from one of 4-5 jetties on the property into the aqua blue water to snorkel the reef 20 feet from the property. It's incredibly well appointed and designed to increase privacy for all those that wish, or you can hang by the main beach area where the bar and snack bar is and swim in their protected cove. Oh!, there is a great large pool for all guests near the palapa restaurant and another adults only pool in the center of the resort.

We really enjoyed it and would think this is the best of the best on Cozumel. COZ is not known for its upscale stuff... it's more of a diving, fishing and cruise-stop destination for most of the visitors to the Island. We found the Presidente an incredible destination. We will go back again.

1 detraction: i'm not a fan of "club" or time share sales techniques. Thought we had rid ourselves of them at the airport. There is a desk at the Presidente to grab your attention and try to convince you to spend 2-3 hours with a sales person. Not enough time on our vacation to even be pleasant to the folks manning the desk:sorry!

A side note: I've not had better service or attention than that from the head concierge, Jorge Luis Gutierrez. Incredibly attentive and always one step ahead of our needs without being smothering. he'll go far in this business.

Room Tip: The reef section is best

Dear Guest,

We are very pleased and thankful for your review; it is very rewarding. It is also very detailed and helpful for travelers. I have shared your comments with my team and thanked them for their job in making happy guests like you.

Regarding the comment that the resort had been hit hard by the last big hurricane Wilma, you are totally right, we renovated the property completely and spent over $30Million to make it even better than before. Thank you for bringing the point, since I guess some people might not know of such refurbishment which was finished over a year ago and we have received many complements from our guests.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon, and best regards,

Guillermo Valencia

My family and I have been traveling to Cozumel for the spectacular diving since the late 1970's. We have stayed practically everywhere, north island, way down south, in town, out of town, condos, beach front houses, you name it and we've probably tried it. By far the nicest place in Cozumel, when you weigh everything out, is the El Presidente. And by everything I mean everything! LOCATION: enough removed from the bustle of town and the cruise ship crowd, yet still a quick trip in for dinning or shopping. Also as divers who don't use the in house shop, the location is south of the caleta (marina), so they will pick you up right at the pier just passed the pool.
SERVICE: as many reviewers have stated, the service at this hotel is exceptional. Everyone is very courteous, friendly, attentive, and strives to make your stay memorable.
Rooms: we stayed in the 1100 wing on the ground level. These are perfectly situated looking at the ocean, pool, restaurant and everything in easy walking distance. As some have stated, there are ocean views that are fairly removed from all this, so if this is important, try asking for one of these rooms.
Food: we had free daily breakfast buffet which we took full advantage of. Fresh juices, american and mexican egg dishes, fresh tropical fruit, just wonderful. We had lunch usually on the dive boat, and we had dinner in town as often as we ate here. The three or for times we had dinner here were wonderful. The food was excellently prepared and the service was spot on. We particularly enjoyed Carlos, our waiter. Always an infectious smile, his presence often made the meal for us.
OVERALL: we had booked and checked into another hotel, a little closer to town. We had a miserable start to our vacation, the service was horrible, the water was shut off in our rooms, construction nose right outside our window, pina coladas were six bucks a piece and the bartender had no change. So, to salvage our week in Coz, we went where we KNEW everything would be perfect. This isn't the cheapest resort on the island, but when everything needs to be just right, you can't go wrong with the El Presidente!

My boyfriend and I had a great time at the Presidente. The staff was very friendly (unlike some Carribbean resorts we've stayed at before). Everyone seemed generally happy to be there and enjoying the good weather and nice. We were there primarily for diving and the dive shop was very well run. Also notably, the facilities on the dive boats were cleaner than most I have seen. One thing that was less than ideal was the requirement for cash for many hotel affiliated activities. While some vendors did accept credit card, cash was strongly recommended. However there was no guest cash machine on premises. One of the staff was nice enough to take me the office to use the employee cash machine once.

All in all, we had a very food experience. We would highly recommend this hotel.

The resort and beach is amazing but even more important is the staff. From the moment you arrive till you leave they only want to make your trip fantastic. Due to some booking issues on my part my initial expectations were not meet. BUT the staff and Chef Concierge Jorge Gutierrez went out of their way to not only meet and exceed my expectations.
The snorkleling out side your door is some of the best on the island, but if you care for more or a dive they will accomidate. The food is prepared with detail whether you eat on the beach or in any of the on site dining options.
I know I sound like a advertisement but this is my 3rd trip their and each time it's just as wonderful as the time before.

Room Tip: The beach front that face the dock no privacy
