“Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2012

Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort. It had many wonderful amenities and the service was fantastic. Eating at a different restaurant each night. A wonderful way to try different kinds of food. You could swim in the different pool areas as well as being able to walk along the beach. Which was really nice at night. The last night that my husband and I were there; there was a romantic dinner on the beach with live entertainment. One thing that could have been better was the transportation from the airport to the resort and the transportation from the resort into Cancun.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the ocean side so that you can sit out on the balcony in the morning to have a...

This resort was alright. The staff were wonderful, the rooms were clean but the food was horrible! One person in our family is a vegetarian and has never had trouble eating at all-inclusives before. Strangely, this hotel made EVERYTHING with meat/fish/seafood. The vegetable lasagna had beef in it, the penne had ham in it, the potatoes had bacon on them etc. etc. Lunch time at the grill near the pool was even worse! It was a carnivore's paradise! The Asian restaurant had a tofu entree that was good. It is too bad that a huge resort like Moon Palace would simply keep veggie burgers handy for the few vegetarians that wanted to eat near the pool. It sounds like an easy solution to me.

Room Tip: We stayed at the Nizuc side and it was very quiet for sleeping.

We visited the Moon Palace from April 7th through the 14th. Many of the existing reviews give great detail about the resort as a whole, so I’ll stick with the areas that made our trip very special.

We stayed in a Family Deluxe room on the Sunrise side, but seemed to spend more time in the Nizuk pool and Nizuk Kid’s Club. It seemed a bit smaller and quieter. Jasinto was an outstanding waiter by the Nizuk pool, always smiling and extremely attentive.

Our kids really enjoyed the Kids Club activities. It was a nice way for them to get some time out of the sun and relax. The staff was incredible there, especially on the Nizuk side. They have non-stop activities throughout the day and you feel like your children are in good hands. They also provide you with a radio if they need to get in touch with you or vice versa. It was also a great way for me and my wife to have an hour or two to relax.

Miguel May in the Bugambillias Restaurant really went out of his way to make me, my wife and two daughters (4 and 6) feel very special. He always had our drinks ready as we sat down and had special gifts for our daughters. The last night we were at the resort, he coordinated a special meal for us in the restaurant, presented by the head chef. It was definitely the best meal we had all week and was based on everything he noticed we liked. He also had a special meal for our daughters. I simply can’t say enough nice things about Miguel. He’s an incredibly special and genuinely very nice guy. Amancio, the chef and Miguel Gutierez, the manager also really made for a special dining experience.

Overall, it was an outstanding trip and we hope to visit again. The service and staff made a nice resort into an incredible resort.

Room Tip: Family Deluxe category was great with 2 kids. King bed and adult drinks on one side and two double...

Just spent a week at the Moon Palace in Cancun and it really wasn’t what we were looking for. We were hoping for a resort with good beach swimming. Moon Palace is NOT the place for beach swimming. The entire stretch of beach on the property is solid kelp right up to the water line. Swimming or even wading is impossible. I read some reviews that commented about the beach and I thought it was just around the edge or it really wasn’t that bad, but the other reviewers were right. YOU CAN”T SWIM AT THIS BEACH. They do have kayaks and catamaran sailboats that were great, but no beach swimming.

There were a lot of swimming pools just as advertised that were nice, but since we came to snorkel with tropical fish, we weren’t very interested in the pools. If you have young kids or just want to relax by a pool, this is a very nice place. Except in the evening when they played very loud music all around the pool area.

The food was very mediocre and almost flavorless. If you like spicy and real Mexican food, you will not get it here. Yes, there were lots of choices and the food was all prepared well, just not seasoned and flavorful. I’ve had more flavorful breakfasts at fast food restaurants and the Chinese meal was below the quality of a high school cafeteria. Even the Italian restaurant that most other reviewers raved about was not a flavorful as Olive Garden. The vegetarian selections were very limited too. My wife is a vegetarian and had difficulty finding something to eat. Last year we stayed at another all inclusive resorts in Mexico where the food was fabulous. We were expecting the same thing. It definitely was not worth the thousands of dollars that we paid for the mandatory “all inclusive” package, especially since we ate at least one meal a day away from the property doing all day activities. The mixed drinks were disappointing too.

There were some good points. All the members of the staff were fantastic, very friendly and attentive. The grounds are very well kept and cleaned. The rooms are very nice and up-scale. The overall appearance of the resort was terrific.

We did all day activities 4 of the 7 days we were there. Again, we thought the “all inclusive” price would cover them, but it only covered one (using some of our $1,500 club dollars). The second one we got to use our club dollars only because we agreed to sit through the time share presentation. We got a discount price on the third trip (which was still more expensive than booking directly on-line) and we had to pay for the fourth ourselves. Moon Palace is located over an hour drive to the good parks like Xcaret and Xel Ha, and that’s if you are driving directly there. Using the resort transportation takes even more time because the bus stops at several other resorts to pick up passengers both going to and returning from the activities. For the price, I expected direct transportation in a resort van.

The $1,500 club dollars you get for paying in advance is also misleading. If you use it to up-grade to the VIP rooms, they take all 1,500 at once. If not, you can use limited amounts for certain things, like $100 discount on sunglasses. However, they charge $400 - which means I would be paying $300 for the same sunglasses I can get at any shopping mall for $125. They also allow you to use $100 in club dollars to purchase silver jewelry, but everything in the shop was well over $500. Of course, we were able to use the club dollars to pay for two activities. We didn’t use any of the rest.

You have to wear a hospital type wrist band the entire time you are there. They put it on when you check in and they have to cut it off when you check out. That really didn’t bother me, but it bothered my wife because she has a white tan line on her wrist.

Transportation back to the airport fell through. You have to confirm your return transportation within 2 days before you leave, even though we provided our return information in an email a week before we arrived and again in person when we checked in. Since we were on all day activities the last two days we were there, the transportation desk was closed when we finally got back to the resort and no one at the check-in desk could help us. We had to pay $35 for a taxi to the airport when we left. The airport is 8 minutes away. I can get a taxi from downtown New York to the airport which is much further away, for $22.

First, this is the only time I've stayed at an all inclusive so I don't have anything to compare to. With that in mind, our overall experience at Moon Palace was excellent. Great facilities, very friendly employees, clean rooms, and very good food/drinks. We stayed at Nizuc very near the Grand. It is a sprawling complex but there is bus/cart transportation to each area; we took advantage of the exercise opportunity and walked most of the time. We were there with a group of people as part of a high school graduation senior trip and everyone had a great time.

Food: breakfast buffet at all the restaurants is very good with a wide variety to choose from. For lunch, recommend Los Tacos (at the Grand) or try one of the stone oven cooked pizzas that are outside near the pool areas. Don't have poolside sushii since that was not very good (although sushi at Bambu and in the sushi bar at Grand was excellent).
For dinners, our preference is a sit down meal rather than a buffet: At the Grand, Caribeno was very good. Make time to visit the golf resort for Asian at Bambu and Italian at La Trattoria. The Brazilian Arrecifes in Nizuc is tradtional Brazilian style with lots of grilled meat; if you've been to Fogo De Chao it is similar to that....not at that level of quality but still pretty darn good. You can also get room service and each time we had it, the food was good. It was very busy when we were there and the longest it took for room service was one hour.

If you're looking to use resort credits, the Spa is well worth it. Just be sure to specify when you resever that you want the spa at the golf resort. Nizuc has a spa on site that is not nearly as nice so don't get short changed and end up over there instead. We also used points for a souvenier pack of tequila and a box of cigars. I did a two hour short game golf lesson and that was OK. You can use points for golf but must pay to rent clubs if you don't have your own ($50 per round). We also used 300 points for the Romantic Dinner. We weren't quite sure of that when we booked it but it really was kind of fun. They have dinner on an open patio area near the water at Sunrise with very good service, a piano player, and the food was very good. Lobster is nothing great but overall we thought it was a good time. Remember there is a "tax" that must be paid for the points so if you use all 1,500 that will cost you about $150 total.

Beach is nice for laying out but not for swimming since it is weedy....take the free shuttle to the sister hotel Palace Beach if you want to be in the pretty water.

For night life the disco was closed for remodeling but both Sunrise and Nizuc had entertainment in the lobby each night...live singer, DJ and dancing. The Swing Bar outside at Sunrise is a popular hangout with the young crowd. Be aware if you are taking your children the drinking age is 18 in Mexico and if you have an adult band you have free access to all the drinks.

I read in advance the pressure of time share selling at the resort so I was expecting that. When you first check in you need to meet with a hotel advisor who explains the resort credit and will try to have you book a hotel "tour" which is really a timeshare pitch. Simply tell them you are not interested and be done with it (unless you are interested in that). After we said no we had one phone message halfway through our trip asking if we were interested but nothing more. So if you say no they really don't bother you about it.

We had no major issues but a couple of times that we needed to talk with someone the response was always excellent...they seemed sincerely interested in keeping the customers happy.

So no real complaints with Moon Palace and I would consider going there again in the future.

Room Tip: You can get Ocean Front or Ocean View. We chose Ocean View and although we were back away from the...
