The Hyatt Caribe is perfect for those seeking a quiet sophisticated resort in a great location. The pluses are as follows in order of importance to me:
The beach is fantastic. It's wide, not too rocky is very secluded and not crowded. The hotel's exterior is very well kept, with extensive landscaping. Although this property was built in the 70's, the exterior areas have been nicely maintained. I've stayed here twice and it never seems crowded. Perfect for relaxation. One final plus is the service. Everyone was very friendly, though not in an overt way. When we stayed here from January 2 thru 7, 2005, we were upgraded to a villa room, and when asked for a villa on the front row directly by the beach, the front desk was very accomodating and gave us a great villa by the ocean, directly overlooking the beach! (Be forewarned, all villas do not have an ocean view, though all of the rooms in the 7 story main building do have great ocean views.)
Now for the minuses: The villa rooms are fairly small for a hotel with the Hyatt name. They are not tiny, but be aware the size and quality of the rooms may not be as good as some other major hotels in Cancun. The beds are fairly hard, though if you are used to sleeping on a firm mattress, its not a problem. The major drawback to the Hyatt are the high prices for food. We ate there only once, the first day. We were charged 3.50 for a soft drink with our meal. When we requested a refill, we found we had been charged an additional 3.50! That was all I needed to know. We ate out at the many fine establishments in the nearby shopping areas after that first day.
Overall, the Hyatt is a great hotel if you're not looking for a wild party scene and enjoy quiet sophisticated luxury in a gorgeous setting. We'll definitely go back for a third visit.
