We have been going to Cancun for more than 20 years and usually stay in 4 and 5 star hotels. Although this is not a 5 star hotel, we liked this place and felt it was a good value. Here are my hits and misses. The hotel staff was polite and helpful. Our room was recently renovated. It was very clean, comfortable and everything worked; something you don't always find at the older hotels in Cancun. The pool was really nice, and big but I missed a swim up bar. The cement around the pool was little rough and somewhat uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet. There were plenty of chairs with shade by the pool. The beach was nice. Good surf. I like waves. There was a slight undertow during tide changes, but it was December and windy. This would be calmer in spring/summer season. No long walks on the beach though. The beach was isolated from the other hotels due to beach erosion. This too may change in spring/summer. The beach in front of the hotel was great and had no exposed rocks. The food was good at the restaurants but a little pricey. We really only ate either breakfast or lunch there and then went out for dinner. We saw the time share people but they didn't bother us. Maybe they can tell we have been saying no for 20 years?

We stayed here this trip because we were accompanied by another couple who's budget didn't allow a 5 star hotel, and since they had never been to Cancun before they trusted me to find the hotel. I wasn't too worried if the Hyatt didn't measure up to our expectations because we were only staying there for 3 days before we ventured south to an AI resort Playa Del Carmen for 7 days. This was the other couples honeymoon (second marriage for both, no big deal) and they had never been out of the US so we gave them their "Cancun orientation" and then cut them loose for their remaining 4 days. I choose the Hyatt because all rooms are ocean front and it has been recently renovated. And also for it's location on the hotel strip. Close to shopping and good dining and all the touristy stuff our first timers would want to see. I have to say, the Hyatt didn't disappoint me.

Over all I give this place 4 dots but for value I give it 5. I would stay there again. Here is a link to our pictures. http://bill-and-val.com look in photo gallery/ travel pics/ Cancun/ Hyatt Caribe

The Hyatt Caribe is perfect for those seeking a quiet sophisticated resort in a great location. The pluses are as follows in order of importance to me:
The beach is fantastic. It's wide, not too rocky is very secluded and not crowded. The hotel's exterior is very well kept, with extensive landscaping. Although this property was built in the 70's, the exterior areas have been nicely maintained. I've stayed here twice and it never seems crowded. Perfect for relaxation. One final plus is the service. Everyone was very friendly, though not in an overt way. When we stayed here from January 2 thru 7, 2005, we were upgraded to a villa room, and when asked for a villa on the front row directly by the beach, the front desk was very accomodating and gave us a great villa by the ocean, directly overlooking the beach! (Be forewarned, all villas do not have an ocean view, though all of the rooms in the 7 story main building do have great ocean views.)

Now for the minuses: The villa rooms are fairly small for a hotel with the Hyatt name. They are not tiny, but be aware the size and quality of the rooms may not be as good as some other major hotels in Cancun. The beds are fairly hard, though if you are used to sleeping on a firm mattress, its not a problem. The major drawback to the Hyatt are the high prices for food. We ate there only once, the first day. We were charged 3.50 for a soft drink with our meal. When we requested a refill, we found we had been charged an additional 3.50! That was all I needed to know. We ate out at the many fine establishments in the nearby shopping areas after that first day.

Overall, the Hyatt is a great hotel if you're not looking for a wild party scene and enjoy quiet sophisticated luxury in a gorgeous setting. We'll definitely go back for a third visit.

We've been to Cancun twice and we enjoyed our stay. The Hyatt is nice but I wouldn't return.

First the good news.

The BEACH ROCKS. You can sit on the beach in front of the pool if you want a party atmosphere OR go down just a bit and have a very quiet area with very few people. More than enough chairs.

There is also a party pool and a quiet pool.

The breakfast buffet is auesome and frequently they run specials for their guests.

Maid service excellent. Location good. We stayed in the villas, and they were very nice.

Lots of security.

Now the bad news.

Drinks and food are very expensive and the door man will not let you bring food or drinks in from town so if you, hide it.

There are much better values for hotels that are just as nice.

We stayed at this hotel 9 years ago and have not been back until this December 4-11. I read the reviews on tripadvisor and thought we had maybe made a mistake. Nonetheless, we took the advice of one of the reviewers and paid $50/day to upgrade to the regency villas. Best investment we made. We were in the newer section across from the regency club. The hotel was not crowded and we had an excellent room overlooking the ocean. The staff were great, the Royal holiday people did not pressure us, the weather was great and all in all, it was an enjoyable 7 days. I read on this forum where the hotel prohibited someone from bringing in liquor, snacks, and soda but we did and were never challenged. And, we saw almost everone else bringing in their own stuff. Even the bellman suggested we should do so to save money. I would not pay the prices they charged for the mini bar, and every restrauant there was expensive. However, all restrauants in Cancun seem expensive compared to other places we have been in the Caribbean. It seemed like most of the remodeling was completed as we heard very little noise. I guess they wanted all the work done as they enter their high season that starts about the 23rd of Dec. Hopefully we will be back next year.

Went to Cancun (first week of December 2004) and we ended up moving to another hotel. I had read reviews that was a four star hotel, but is wasn't, the hotel is OLD. When we got our keys we were told that it was a remodeled room, but it was still old and the closet/drawers had a wierd smell. However, the hotel is good deal if you don't want to spend a lot of money and if you aren't looking for luxury. However, the prices of room service, restuarants & bar were extremely high for not being a luxury hotel. The pool is big, but dirty, however, the staff was nice.

I stayed at Hyatt Caribe where my company had am annual conference, and our day was set for both business and pleasure.

Pros:
- Cocay Buffet had superior food and selection for morning (check out Mexican Friday); and Seafood and Surf&Turf buffets in the evening were outstanding and reasonably priced.
- Staff was always courteous and respectful, and prompt. Never an empty glass.
- Prices for tourist items (cigars, postcards, gifts) were MUCH cheaper at Hyatt than at shops in local malls or markets.
- Beach and pool facilities were delightful.
- Close to shops, restaurants, party places, and most importantly to the bus stop which takes you anywhere for 6.50 Pesos.
- Water is purified from sink and ice machine. Recommend for partyers to fill their ice bucket at night and wake up to 2+ litres of ice water.
- Concierge recommended excellent restaurant "la Parilla" in town, and courteous bilingual drivers.

Cons:
- Water pressure and temperature varied in the shower and hot tub. Need more "jets" in the jacuzzi
- Expensive for all drinks. Go out a block to OXXO or Extra to get drinks for 20-30% of hotel prices.
- Slow with giving checks - had to wait to sign to room.
- Cracks in the drywall - no biggie but reflects care and maintenance

Suggestions:
- More "mixer" activities to help guests get acquainted with each other.
- Replace towels, glasses, etc. to full capacity so each day starts at 100%.
- Include Alka-Seltzer and Pepto Bismol in room amenities.

All in all, an excellent hotel which I would highly recommend for couples and families.

(But check your bills before you leave, and confirm your "tips" match your intentions).
