Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

This is our second trip to the Hyatt Ziva in under 7 months. We were there in August with our children and friends and I left a review then, however I wanted to update my review since we traveled with friends and family (all adults) this time. My husband and I have been traveling to Mexico (Cancun and The Riviera Maya) for the last 7 years and I have been coming to this area for about 20 years, and this has been our favorite resort so far. We traveled with a total of 8 couples of friends/family (mid thirties to early 60’s. I'll break down the categories to provide a more detailed review.

Restaurants/Bars:

Let me start by saying that you don't need reservations and all of the restaurants are first come, first serve. We all loved this for several reasons. At most resorts, you either have to wake up early and "try" to select the place that you want to dine at that evening, or you have to select your reservations the day that you arrive. We have always disliked that arrangement because we may not be in the mood for the specific cuisine that we chose, or we may want to go to dinner later/earlier than we chose originally. There weren’t really long waits for any of the restaurants. We chose not to go to the hibachi restaurant (Moongate), this time...which if I remember correctly, you can make a reservation (the day of) for the Teppanyaki tables as they are limited. Juana Margaritas is right next door so you can order drinks if there is a wait.

Dips & Sips Swim-up Bar:
We missed Eduardo this trip. He was moved to the Hyatt Club bar so we didn’t see him much as we spent most of our time at the main pool or beach. He and Uriel were our absolute favorite bartenders and we did get to see them, just not as often as our last trip. The swim-up bar was always stocked with top shelf alcohol (Grey Goose, Belvedere, Don Julio etc). Many resorts that claim to have top shelf alcohol usually do not have the good stuff at the pool bars. This was a huge plus for our group as we enjoy a better quality of alcohol.

Tradewinds: This was our least favorite restaurant for dinner (last time we loved it). The ribeye was chewy...normally my favorite type of steak but the filet was actually perfect (I prefer my steak to be cooked medium rare but asked for medium as I noticed at most places in the area that they under cook their steaks). It was tender and juicy. They also have a small area that you can go up and get a few appetizer items and breads with different oils and vinegars. The lobster bisque was not good at all...none of us enjoyed it. Our one friend loved the octopus and ordered that as a side to his steak. This restaurant also served a sit down breakfast. It was good, but we preferred the breakfast buffet. The tenderloin tips were a good breakfast item...served with tortillas to make a taco-like breakfast. You can ask for different juices, hot sauces (loved the habanero), bacon etc. Also, the pancakes are good but at the buffet they make them right in front of you so we preferred them there.

Lorenzo's- I had the beef carpaccio as an appetizer and thought it was very good. The pizza with the procuitto was delicious (thin crust and tasty) and also the spicy pizza was great. I'm from NJ, so nothing really compares to NY/NJ pizza, but it was still very good. We went to Lorenzo’s a few times during our trip.

Chevys- The mozzarella sticks were good (tasted like your normal mozz sticks) and the poppers were tasty. Also, the onion rings were good. My husband said that his buffalo chicken sandwich was good one day for lunch but not so good the next day so I guess it’s not consistent. The setting reminded me of a Johnny Rockets. This was our least favorite restaurant for lunch, but it’s great if you bring children.

Moongate- We only had the hibachi here the first time we came here back in August and decided to skip it this time but just to give you some details: you had your choice of steak, chicken, shrimp or a combo of all 3 which most of us chose. The show was your typical teppanyaki show, which is why we chose to try out the French restaurant this time around (it’s adults only and we had our kids with us last time).

Buffet- We generally do not like dinner buffers and prefer a sit-down dinner so we skipped it for dinner. Last time, we did try the Mexican and the International nights. They were ok. The homemade churros were delicious if you got them while they were still hot. The international night wasn't very "international", but they did have a section where they would cook up a steak, chicken or chorizo for you, as well as a seafood station where you had your choice of salmon, shrimp, mahi-mahi, mussels and clams. The shrimp were great! The breakfast buffet was fabulous. Large selection with a variety of fresh juices, omelette stations, crepe station etc. Our favorite was the pancake station or the omelette station.

Habaneros- This was located on the beach and we pretty much ate lunch here daily. The mesquite steak tacos (ask for cheese and the chipotle sauce) were my great but my absolute favorite were the Baja tacos (shrimp), but all of the tacos were good. The shrimp ceviche and the tuna tostadas were also delicious (I normally don’t eat raw fish out of the country, but I did this time and so did several others- happy to report that none of us became sick). The men ordered the octopus ceviche almost daily and loved it. I personally was not a fan of it on the day that I tried it. They also have a bar there with 3 swings...we usually ate at the bar section. Bartenders were great here. I would personally like to mention that Raul and Alejandro were definitely the best bartenders that we had for this trip. The first day that we arrived, they remembered us from our previous trip. Pretty impressive considering how many ppl they see daily. Tipping the wait staff and bartenders probably does help with receiving better service. We tend to tip for every meal and one larger tip Amy for the drinks. We liked the Don Julio margaritas better here than anywhere else.

Bastille's- This was the adults only French cuisine. We loved this restaurant. We ate there twice for dinner. The French onion soup was amazing. Not salty and has this weird cheese and bread mixture on top. We all loved it. The steak tartar was very good/fresh. I love the filet mignon and the lamb was also fabulous. The salmon appetizer was another item that we all enjoyed. Our waiter was amazing the night we went and brought us a dessert sampler...the chocolate soufflé was all of our favorites (with ice cream). I think that the wait for a table of 6 was the longest here because they only had 2 tables to accommodate that your ppl. I’m not sure if it would’ve fit the other 2 in our party but they did not join us for the French cuisine.

Pasteles- This was an amazing candy shop that had everything you can think of. If you have kids, they will be obsessed with this place. It had cotton candy, ice cream/milkshakes, a candy buffet, a chocolate fountain with strawberries, cookies, donuts, cupcakes, pastries etc. It was actually like other reviewers stated...Willy Wonka-like. The coffee ice cream was the best!

Coffee Shop- We had coffee here almost daily. It's similar to a Starbucks. You can get reg coffees, cappuccinos, lattes, iced lattes, cold brews, flavored syrups etc. They also had cookies, muffins and croissants available as well. I didn’t try the muffins but one person in our part ate them daily. He said they were very fresh.

At the pool there is a truck that has nachos, quesadillas, a daily special item (such as a cheesesteak, Reuben, po'boy), hotdogs etc. We all enjoyed the nachos (with and without chili), but ate here mostly as a snack.

There are also carts that they walk around with that had different foods throughout the day (fish tacos, ribs, ceviche, beef kebabs, nachos etc). Everything was great.

Punta Vista Roof-Top Bar: We went here only at night when they had entertainment. They had a Havana night with a cigar roller and a band one night...another night they had a DJ (music/club vibe). It closes at midnight. We wish it would stay open a little later as there is not much going on late night.

Tres Cerveza's:
The lemon pepper wings here were soooo good. Ask for them to be crispy though. They have different types of beer and food/apps to pick on. There are tables, couches and pool tables inside. Also, there is a band here sometimes. Check the entertainment schedule daily.

Juana Margarita- The margaritas were good, and the guys enjoyed Don Julio Reposado on the rocks.

Beach:
The beach was very clean, lots of palapas with lounge chairs. If we got there before 9, we never had an issue finding a chair. We only went to the beach near Habaneros since it was close to the main pool. We found that the water was very clear and there wasn't any seaweed along the sand.
You could rent kayaks for 1 or 2, boogie boards, paddle boards and snorkeling gear. There were plenty of fish to see. To the left there is a small pier that goes out where some choose to pay to have a romantic dinner on the beach, overlooking the water. Closer to the pier, the water is a little murky and it's more rocky. In the ocean there was a huge rock climbing avalanche (both adult and kids went on it). Bartenders came around to take your drink orders/bring water etc.
There are many towels at the entrance to the beach (no room key needed).

Pool:
There are plenty of pools throughout the resort. There is the Club pool (which is the quiet pool). We didn't utilize this pool because we prefer to see the entertainment throughout the day.

The rooftop has an adults only infinity pool which overlooks the resort and ocean. Beautiful!

The main pool has a swim up bar. Above it there is an Infinity pool that overlooks the ocean and main pool. This is also where they do the aerobics, pool Zumba.
This is where they did a few contests throughout the week.
We all agreed that they definitely could have done more entertainment at the pool. Most places do several things throughout the day and we didn't see much going on besides maybe a few contests all week. Maybe some dance lessons near the pool or more music. The only time they played "fun" music was during the water exercises. We met a lot of ppl on the trip and everyone seemed to agree that the elevator music that they played at the pool was lame. Since there is a quiet pool, those that do not want to listen to music or entertainment have the option to go to that pool. Just a suggestion based on opinions of several people that we spoke to during our trip. Also, there are plenty of chairs, cabanas and towels around the pool. We never had an issue finding chairs.

Dolphin Pool: We didn't do the swim with the dolphins experience, but it looks like they cleaned up the water and dolphin area. Last time it didn’t look very clean, but they definitely fixed it!

Room:
We stayed in Turquoize Tower and it was amazing. We actually booked the Club tower and they upgraded us. We were so thankful for the the experience. We had an oceanfront, private balcony. The beds were comfortable (pillow-top on mattress). The fridge was stocked with waters, sodas, beer, airplane bottles of liquor (which we never drank) and there were snacks (Oreos, m&ms, chips, breakfast bars) that were also left. There were 2 sinks in the bathroom and a very large shower (rain shower shower head as well as a regular one that you can remove and you can see the ocean from the shower if you left the shower privacy slider open. The toilet had a separate door for privacy. We did not use our butlers but they were always so polite and had our room decorated our
The room was very clean (I didn't see any bugs or mosquitoes).
We did not have any problem with anything being stolen (we did utilize the safe for our jewelry, money, electronics, passports etc), and we did leave money for the maid daily ($4-$5 per day).
In the Club Tower, they have a very small food station along with a huge refrigerator stocked with water/soda/beer that you have access to if you’re in this tower. Also, you have a private checkin and checkout area.

Overall the resort was fabulous. Definitely our favorite all-inclusive resort that we have been to. If you're looking for fantastic food, then an all-inclusive trip isn't for you and you won't be satisfied. My husband and I ARE foodies, and we live in New Jersey. We tend to go to NY & Philly pretty often so we rarely expect food to be as good as the restaurants that we frequent, however, if you're ok with decent food and go into the trip knowing that you're not going to be dining at 5 star restaurants, you'll love it here. The staff is so friendly and will do everything to ensure that you are having fun and that you have everything that you need during your trip. Check-in and check-out were quick. We did have to wait for our room, however our friends' rooms were ready before 3:00.
Although tips are included, we did tip the waitstaff and bartenders. They work extremely hard, and we know that they do not get paid much so a small tip goes a long way. They truly do appreciate it.
The only thing that any of us said that we would change was that we'd want more entertainment at night and during the day (there were only 2 nights that they did something late night at the roof-top pool) and there was a band one night at Tres Cervezas. There should be something every night for those that would like to do something late night. There are things to do in town, however we don't like to leave the resort. Other than that, we had no complaints. No one got sick from the food or alcohol which was also a huge plus. Mosquitos were non-existent both times of year (which is very surprising because I’m always eaten alive in Cancun...they must do a very good job spraying). We absolutely loved this resort and are planning to come back again in Aug. Yes, 3 times to the same resort in a year is saying something because we normally like to try out other resorts. We travel so much that we finally found a place that we loved, felt safe, had a great beach and was overall just fantastic.
Also, if you're looking for an airport transfer service, Kalido Travel was awesome. I believe that Liam is the owner and his company is reasonable and professional (and most importantly, on time). We've used several companies in Mexico and this was the most reasonable for private transfers. We’ve used his services about 4 times now and love it!

We recently stayed a week at the Hyatt Ziva in Cancun and from the minute we arrived at the turquoise tower we were greeted and checked in immediately. We were assigned butlers, Joel and Alex who both were amazing and responded quickly to our every need. The hotel itself has wonderful restaurants and bars, and all employees were outstanding. It was touching to walk by employees and see them gesture by putting their hand on their heart throughout the hotel. I am a sports fanatic and the brewery sports bar was really nice. All bars had premium alcohols which makes all the difference, and the Margaritas were phenomenal. The beach was incredible with fine white sand and beautiful blue and turquoise water. This is a can't miss hotel sitting perfectly with the Bay on one side and ocean on the other. After returning home I found I had left a few items in the room and had no problem getting them returned with the help of the concierge Francisco. A truly great experience and one you won't regret if you plan to go to Cancun.

My husband and I booked a 6 night stay at Hyatt Zilara. We heard from a few couples that you could come to the Hyatt Ziva for dinner if you got a pass from the concierge. We were recommended to go to the French restaurant and had the most wonderful meal and service. Josiah and Luis! They made our evening with their friendliness, graciousness and laughs. Both of these gentlemen were extremely friendly and attentive for our dinner. What a wonderful experience - from the food and the staff. Thank you!

Overall the resort is really nice, perfect blue water, service is excellent and the food is decent. My husband, 10yr old son and I had a great time. Upon arrival at the airport the customs line was crazy long but moved a lot quicker than we thought. The trip from the airport was easy, lot's to look at and uneventful which was nice.

Weather in March was warm and didn't really cool off at night which was great but it was super windy...like, crazy windy! Apparently from what we heard it is common that time of year. So windy that we felt cold in the pool with the swim up bar but the infinity pool right next to that is heated so that was great.

The ocean was super ruff so getting my 10year old out to the iceberg was a little challenging and iceberg itself was even more challenging. Looks fun and easy on pictures.

There are activities on the resort to do such a swim with dolphins, rent jet ski''s etc, we just decided not do any of them. My son was happy playing catch in the pool all day while my husband and I just layed around and had great drinks. We ordered a lot of our favorite: grey goose (ask for premium liquor), cranberry juice and a lemon or lemonaid! Bar opens at 10am.

The waiters come around and offer drinks, not food. The food truck at the pool and the food carts were perfect for lunch. Food truck opens at noon.

The food isn't fine... nothing to get too crazy about (same with all inclusivse we have been too) but the Hibachi was our favorite... had that twice and just as good both times. Highly recommend it. The NY strip at Tradewinds was good also.

Watching the Dolphins was a real treat. The area they are in seems small but they seem happy... they were very playful especially first thing in the morning. It was fun watching them from our balcony. Then one evening my son and I had a "private show" put on by the Dolphins. They were just playing around, jumping up, etc... my son and I enjoyed the 20min we spent with them just watching them.

We got a standard oceanview room. We didn't bother with an upgrade since we hardly spend anytime in our room. The room was fine. The only downfall was the pullout couch isn't what you would consider a "normal" pull out couch. It's more similar to a futon but the issue is it has a bump/hump in the bed up near your upper back. It was not comfortable for adults. Luckily my 10 year old son didn't notice it until the 2nd night and didn't seem too bothered by it. Maid service was excellent! Room service was decent.

The beach on the side of the hotel near the swim up bar is a small beach with a bunch of tiki umbrella's. It's nice, great sand, just small which didn't bother us. It was pretty and the sand felt great inbetween your toes!!

The other beach, on the other side of the hotel has a very large beach but it is very different. The sand is not soft and we were surprised that it is a public beach. Also, the water is much more rough. The pool on that side is different also. No swim up bar and quieter. We were going to rent the 2 story cabana's until we realized it was on that side and decided to cancel. We had more fun on the other side.

Make sure you walk past Habenero's along the ocean behind the hotel. Beautiful view!!

My only con's if I was being super picky is that they didn't not play music at the pool which was a bummer. Should have brought our small speaker for music. They also didn't have very much entertainment at the pool. The Hyatt Ziva in Montego Bay we stayed at had a super fun atmosphere and played loud (not too loud) music during the day! My other con was the pull out couch as mentioned above.

The candy shop is nice but they do have the same choices there each day. If you want a couple different options go to the buffet.

They do have nightly entertainment and the night of the breakdancing was great!

Lastly, Oscar Pulido was great and helped us with our luggage and our travel to the aiport. Very nice and quite the gentlemen!

Room Tip: The pull out couch is similar to a futon but it had a hump in the bed near your upper back. It wasn't comfortable for adults.
