Hotel Delfines provides clean, safe and basic accommodations only three blocks of the Malecon beach boulevard, close to the Veracruz Aquarium. A 20-minute taxi cab ride from the airport (tourist cabs at airport counter for 200 pesos), the 5-story hotel is bright- airy with tile floor through-out. The reception desk is serviced 24 hours. Staff does not speak English but makes up for it with friendly service (we better learn to speak Spanish!). An enclosed parking facility is part of the hotel.
All beds are double-beds, so do not expect queen or king-size. Many rooms face the interior staircase/light and airshaft. These rooms have no windows to the exterior of the building and poor air circulation. A musty smell accumulates, but is easily blown out by the A/C. Any word spoken at the front desk, any door opening or closing noise travels throughout the building. I did not sleep more than a few hours during our 4-night stay.
Our double-room was clean, two beds with firm mattresses, clean sheets, a credenza, mirror and night stand. A closet, wall mounted 15" TV with good cable reception, many channels, some bi-langual. The A/C was very efficient, the ceiling fan provided air flow at night. The bathroom was spacious, large shower area, small sink with only cold water, shower was hot - no pressure or water supply issues. Hand soap provided, sufficient towels, no shampoo or other supplies. Our inquiry about additional clothes hangers was forgotten.
The hotel is located off the main tourist area, but close to beach boulevard with frequent bus service (north to Zocalo, south the Boca Del Rio, 8-10 pesos p.p. OW). A walk along the beach to the city center takes 30 minutes. VIPS restaurant by the aquarium will give you a fine "Denny's" experience. The Cafe Andrade (two blocks south, then left on the Malecon) serves a good breakfast and excellent coffee. Palapa Perea, a palm leaf covered restaurant three blocks north on 16th Septiembre Street has you feasting on seafood - at half price what the beach side Palapa restaurants charge.
A 15-20 minute walk east will get you to the central bus station, from where you catch the comfort bus to the El Tajin pyramids (see seperate review).
For the money, this was good value. I understand that the hotel chooses to have bare walls and floors (humidity, carpet = mold, ease of cleaning), but it makes for a lot of echoes/noise. I recommend not to select an interior room for that reason.
PS: Me and my Lady felt safe in Veracruz. We walked day and night, not one bad experience. Armed police/military patrol frequently, branding their automatic weapons. Nobody cheated us, nobody threatened us.
