These were giant size, but not very interesting. Maybe, like some other say, they’re delicious when you’re drunk.

They have delicious looking tlyudas at the Mercado 20 de Noviembre. I passed them up, and was expecting the same, not.

Thank Tautog

Read the reviews on TripAdvisor and it lived up to the hype. I was looking forward to grabbing a late night bite. The tlyuda was fresh and good. The waitstaff was nice, polite and attentive. It’s a place to grab good Tlyudas and a few beers. Amazing street food with ample seating. Locals eat there so you know it’s good!

This is a tlyudas stand that serves its food from a stand on the street. The tlyudas are huge and tasty. I waited about 10 minutes for a to go order, but it was worth the wait!

You know that taco or burrito place you go to at 2 A.M. to soak up the booze before bed? This is that place, and frankly, if you are not in Oaxaca to eat at places like this, then I don’t know why you are there.

We went a bit early for this place (about 10 p.m.). Still there were locals and some students enjoying a late night snack.

Just sit down, order a cold refresco or agua fresca and enjoy the smells of grilling meats and corn waft in from the grill outside while you wait for your tlayuda. The two table sauces – the red pasilla oaxaquena and the green aguacate are quintessential Oaxaca. Spoon them liberally on your tlayuda. Eat. Walk the five or six blocks back to your hotel and immediately pass out.

This is an odd combo of a restaurant in which they cook outside on the street but you eat inside (unless you are there late in the evening and the inside is crowded, in which case you'll eat outside too. There is no atmosphere really to the interior other than a mural of Frida Kahlo on the wall, though I am not sure that she what she has to do with Tlayudas if anything. But it is that lack of atmosphere that gives the place such a great local atmosphere. But more importantly, the tlayudas were the best I had tried. they were folded, crisp, and had that lovely cooked over charcoals taste. It tasted as I had imagined a tlayuda should before visiting Oaxaca. It is also inexpensive. My tlayuda with a slab of meat on top plus a diet coke was around 60 pesos. Hard to beat that!

The name of the place on the awning outside the shop is Las Tlayudas de Libres, but on Google Maps this shop appears as Libres Tlayudas, so if looking for it via that popular resource, that is the string to type in. It is not exactly near much, but then it is not far from much either. Easily walk from there to Santo Domingo or the Zocalo in 10 minutes.

I found the service to be what one would expect from this sort of street-ish vendor - more perfunctory than coddling, but nothing rude or offputting thought. Well, worth a visit, i think, if nothing else other than compare their tlayudas with some of the more fanciful items you find in other restaurants or the mercado.
