I used to stay here all the time when travelling on business around Latin America - great position (although much of the Mexican insurance industry has now moved further out) and had a feeling of style much appreciated by clients.

I managed to get a deal for this hotel which brought it back into my price-range, so was given a somewhat tired room (cracked marble floor in the bathroom) which faced the rear (good if you want a quiet night) but still more than acceptable.

As the title says, much has changed, with what used to be the bar/lounge is now being used as the lobby - something of a loss compared to the previous lay-out, as the bar always seemed to be full, particularly for the Sunday brunch. Now the Sunday Brunch is in a room to the side of the Lobby and the Bar next to that, but the lighting is very (I would say too) low and didn't seem that busy during my stay. Might be an ideal to bring in some tables and chairs to the Lobby and give it back more of the old buzz.

As mentioned the Brunch (and breakfasts, etc.) is now in a separate "market-style" restaurant which was fairly quiet - when the brunch was on, there were a few quirky elements, such as being able to see women making tacos in a separate section divided from the restaurant by a window and the food was good, but generally it lacks atmosphere.

While there I used the spa to try to keep my weight under control after some VERY extensive Mexican lunches - the pool is mixed-sex, but the rest of the facilities are single-sex with the feeling of a gentleman's club, with a wood-panelled lounge area, a changing area, two jacuzzis, sauna, etc. for the men (I assume that the ladies have similar facilities.

All in all, a very functional, well-located hotel with an element of prestige, but has lost the buzz of the past.

Room tip: As always, higher is better

Gamaliel, working in the Market restaurant in the hotel, was incredibly kind, engaging, and remembered my mother from her previous stay months ago. We appreciated the time he took to recommend places to visit in the city and connect with us. The food and service has also been consistently wonderful.
