Right next to a metro station and a good starting point for Palacio Nacional, la Catedral, Templo Mayor, Correos, Bellas Artes, Alameda, Casa de los Azulejos. Do it all in one day and end up on Metro Hidalgo. Or go on and cross Reforma and visit the Monumento a la Revolución, back to Reforma and a cheap bus will take you all the way to Chapultepec, where you can choose between Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Museo Nacional de Antropología, or the posh Polanco area.

I've been to more interesting town squares... the cathedral is interesting and the archaeological diggings might even be interesting, but didn't look particular appealing from the outside. There are some interesting shops in the district near the Zocalo, and the walk there from Reforma has some nice markets and shops.

A must see on a visit to Mexico City and one of the largest squares anywhere. Do not miss the Metropolitan Cathedral, Palacio Nacional and the Museo del Templo Mayor just behind.

Very impressive, with the Cathedral at one end and the Presidential Palace of the other

Whenever we are in the zocalo we don't know what to expect. We have seen everything from aztec dancers and smudgers to protests to a winter display of ice rinks!
