In all fairness, I can't compare this to other hotels in Monterrey, but it just was a bit too dated and depressing.
Pros: Staff was nice, attentive.
Very centrally located to the macro plaza and the church/Museum of Contemporary Arts where we attended a wedding.
Good rate through GetARoom of $70 night, but pictured more of a 3.5 or 4 star hotel. King bed comfortable. Large room.
Wifi was strong.

Cons: Hotel and room was dated and dark; quite depressing.
Water pressure was weak, water temperature completely unpredictable. Reminded me of dorm days. Air conditioning didn't seem to work but once they adjusted it, it was ok.
TV old. Overall, equivalent to a La Quinta or Best Western in the US...again not sure if this is just the style of all the hotels in this area of Monterrey, but would rate it a 2.5 or 3 star max, based on US standards. We only stayed 2 nights and were hardly in the room so didn't feel like we needed to complain or move.

Room tip: Outside facing, otherwise very dark.

We enjoyed our stay at this centrally located hotel. As with other trips around Mexico, the best first place to stay is in the Centro - generally a place for easy access to the touristy things, and a way to introduce you to the city.

Krystal had very clean and modern rooms, good service, and lots of support services available (restaurant, cafe, bar). Unfortunately, the one night we wanted to have a drink in the lobby, the bartender couldn't prepare: Sapphire and Tonic or a Bloody Mary. He also couldn't pour a margarita. So apparently you could have any drink, as long as it was house liquor with soda.

This was a good hotel as a jumping off point. Comfortable beds for a good night rest. And easy Uber pickup location.

Room tip: Higher floors give great city views

Staff: Friendly and polite. We didn't interact with them very much other than check in/out and passing the housekeeping in the halls. Everyone smiled and greeted us. It is helpful if you know some Spanish. If you don't know any they speak enough English to get you what you want and to communicate on a basic level. My boyfriend is intermediate in Spanish and we got about the city just fine.

Cleanliness: It was clean. Do they go and wipe down every single light switch or lamp shade? No. But the toilet was clean, the floor was clean, clean towels, clean bed, etc...

Style: It could use a little updating. It is not the most modern up to date scheme there ever was. I don't care about that personally. I would stay here agian.

Location: We are walking people. We prefer to get out and walk the city rather than drive or cab around. It is not uncommon for us to walk 15-20 miles a day when we are exploring. If you are like us and you love to walk walk walk this is a great area. If you like to walk a little bit...this is still a great area. There is a lot to see and do around the hotel. There is the "River Walk" which is within normal walking distance. At the end of the river walk which is not what most people consider walking distance there is a museum. It is the Steel Museum. We walked the whole river walk but about half way down you can bike it if you aren't a walker. You are within walking distance to the old quaint part of the city "Barrio Antiguo". Very cute, colorful little business and houses. A lot of museums (history and art). There is a nice park across the way from the hotel that is a hop and skip away. There are a lot of food options nearby. We did struggle a little bit with finding a lot of breakfast options. We never ate at the hotel restaurant. We ordered room service our first night because we were so tired. We got the tortilla soup. It was decent.

TRASPORTATION: Metro Rail very close $4.50 pesos. There are plenty of taxi's - you need pesos for this. Not a lot of card readers. Walking - obviously. There is a B cycle around the city not sure where the locations are. There is UBER and buses. I walked, cab and metro railed it around with ease and a moderate amount of spanish.

Wifi was okay. It was not super fast American wifi. It allows you to do basic googling/maps/e-mail/text. I could not use Netflix on my iPad.

Side note: Many people are very picking about their beds and it can be a deal breaker for them. I'm not that picky but feel that there are people who would be upset about the mattress. We do sleep on a memory foam mattress. This bed was very hard. I'm not sure if that is because we are used to memory foam or if this was just a really hard damn bed. My boyfriend and I agreed on this.

Tip: Floor to ceiling glass windows is on one side of the building only (I believe). That side gives you a views of the city with mountains in the background. We were in room 516 which was on the "good side" of the building.

Close to macroplaza and eateries. Hotel is nice but we were dissappointed when we saw our room . We stayed because we had an awesome view, but furniture was extremely old, carpet was old and seemed dirty, there was not one picture on wall so room looked abandoned. Bathroom was a little cramped and dated. Towels dingy and had what seemed like old bloodstain on comforter and one of the chairs.staff was very friendly, lobby very nice and heard restaurant was good. There is a little restaurant right in front of hotel that was excellent called Dontaun and a Koala cafe adjacent to it that was equally good and inexpensive.i think the hotel is remodeling but I'd suggest not putting guests in rooms that are not worthy of Krystal. Lobby bar nice but seemed bartender was doing several jobs but he did make us feel really welcome.

I enjoyed wandering around the many pedestrian streets in this part of town. Definitely not the shiny new affluent part of town but a great local feel and perfect for people watching. The room itself was fine with view of city and mountains beyond. There was a very strong chemical smell in lobby like airplane glue.
