“An incredible, fantastic experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2009

Such a cool experience. I desperately want to go back! Be advised the Rosario Islands are no Turks & Caicos - they are still a bit wild, with bugs (lots of them), chickens roaming, lizards, etc.! BUT they are so uniquely beautiful and exotic. Take a speedboat from Cartagena and arrive 45 minutes later at the Agua which is like coming upon South Beach in the middle of the wilderness. Incredibly chic bungalows (three I believe), most with their own private pool and crazy views out to the islands. Try to get Bungalow #1, it's worth the extra $$ for the privacy and the totally private pool. Common area on the edge of the water, floating dock with private sunbeds and thatched lodge. The food we had was amazing - fish/lobster literally caught from the Mar Caribe that day. Downers: extreme stairs up to the bungalows, massive amounts of bugs (only at night). Actually the whole place is a bit scary at night - a little like Jurassic Park. But safe, obviously, just very exotic/wild. Service leaves a little to be desired, too, but all we really cared about was quick access to cocktails, and that part was just fine! Such pristine beauty is a must see though. I highly recommend combining a few nights at the Agua in Cartagena with one night in Baru. We stayed at the Agua Cartagena first and they arranged the whole thing for us, speedboat ride out ot Baru, etc.

New sister hotel to the much loved Agua B&B, Cartagena on the remote but rapidly developing Baru Island. It has only 3 rooms at present (more planned) & is an hours speed boat ride out of Cartagena in to the mangroves of a beautiful island (bring your repellant!). Two rooms are in one hillside villa & share a lovely pool whilst above it sits an exclusive villa with its own pool/ terrace & amazing views out over the Caribbean/ Rosario Islands. The room is fabulous & the view/ setting breathtaking.
Booked and organised via its big sister hotel all is portrayed as relaxed and easy.....no menus & you book your preferences pre stay....not that they bothered to take much notice of what you asked for. The food repeats even on a 3 days stay (no more lobster & rice please!) & with no menus or bar/ mini bar guide you have no idea what you are spending.....and god are you spending! A lot of the vitals ran out (tea, fruit juice, ice cream etc ) but no one seemed to care or have the foresight to plan/ order....barely an apology & it purports & prices itself as 5*...the same pudding for every meal became a joke. A rough indication of food price was given when ordering....but we believed it was an "all in" meal price. It wasn't & every single item was costed & at London equivalent levels! It's remote Colombia! They asked if we wanted to go out in the boat to the other island...so we did & we asked for a spin round the bay. He wasn't keen but he did it....but at the end a 19 minute (very precise!) bill for fuel was on our bill! He never mentioned a cost & it seemed so petty considering the room prices & captive food & drink audience....there is no where else to go.
The room was beautiful (future maintenance could prove lax/ shoddy) but for those prices I'd expect the pool bin to be emptied within our stay let alone from previous guests & one pool towel for the whole stay.....unbelievable!...and it rained so it was soaked. They just don't have the service sorted....even slightly.
The rooms are up a significant hill with slimy leaf covered concrete steps that are very poorly lit. Dangerous and difficult. They are away from the main building across a very muddy churned public track so I skidded over pre dinner. The staff really try hard but the traditional local fishing families are ill equipped to run a place that markets itself as a bit special so the stunning surroundings are very let down by the amiable but rather clueless staff.....who let all their families in to the compound to watch the TV and sell you artifacts. It is a shame but they need some serious training as they seem a little lost....and you must speak Spanish or there is no hope of ordering anything.
The Agua owners need to gear the place up a bit. The speed boat out was an astonishing $100 each but we had to pay an extra $3 to the marina which seemed really petty considering the spend.
On check out we had no idea what we'd spent as nothing is written down & the staff seemed so disorganised....but boy did they come in to their own. Every single item was listed out with its corresponding exorbitant price. It really wrecked a sweet place that will no doubt get better as it develops. We felt fleeced and cheated.
