Niu de Sol - Hotel Rural
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Palau-Saverdera
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 May 2012

Niu de Sol is branded as a "rural" hotel. Well, it IS in a rural area, quiet, agricultural, vinyards, olive groves,, lemons, oranges, etc. The newly renovated, 100+ year old Farmers co-op is the first building you see upon entering the town. You are as likely to see tractors on the roads as autos, but the hotel in this farming village is anything but "rural". Niu de Sol is , in many ways, more sophisticated than most of the 5 stars I've seen in world capitols. That's a bold statement, but in terms of REAL guest comfort, atmosphere, design & general attention to detail, this is the real McCoy. Largely a creation of Merce, the tireless, friendly, owner, the hotel is perfectly located to explore the N.E. corner of Catalunia. Palau-Sav. is the like hub of a wheel whose spokes radiate out to the Costa Brava, Girona, Figueres, Cap Creus, Cadaques, Roses, & the Pyrenees foothills. I stumbled on it by just poking a finger at the map, just trying to centralize for a four day stay in the area. What & happily found, was a home base that turned into a real "home". There is no fitness center, indoor pool, or aroma therapy spa. Instead, It's clean, quiet, well laid out, the breakfast is 5 star, & the dinner, (must be planned ahead) is even better. the terrace & balconies offer pleasant views, the WiFi is free.(are you listening Marriot, Hilton, et al.?) & parking is 100 ft away, also free. Merce provides excellent advice about superb restaurants in & around the village & will try to provide virtually any other service her guests might need. I just lucked out with this hotel pick, it really was a stab in the dark, but I can't recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: No tips, It looked to me that they all looked good.

I agree that “rural” is only a label to describe a kind of accommodation, furthermore, I am afraid the word rural has not exactly the same meaning in English. The word "rural" in the label of the hotel tries to indicate that we are in a small town, that is run by the owner and that you will find a familiar atmosphere. On the other hand, your comment is tremendously generous and we are very grateful to you. Thanks!

Wonderful hotel in a beautiful village. Rooms were lovely, clean, modern and functional. Breakfast was a delicious buffet and the only complaint would be that the orange juice wasn't fresh. Slightly disappointing that our kids ended up in a bigger room with a nice balcony and bath robes etc for a bit of luxury.

Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Terrace overlooking the road.

Thank you very much for taking a while writing your opinion here. Refering to the orange juice, I have to say that we offer the best refrigerated brand in the market. In fact, it is a "premium" juice. On the other hand, if you say you would stay again, think about the possibility to come in a different part of the year, for instance October, when the water of the sea is still warm and the light and sun are great!

Spend one night in this charming little hotel, very nice room with lots of delicate touches, well appointed, very nice warm welcome from Merce and her mother (the cook we beleive). Beguining of the season so hotel and town were very quiet. Enjoyed a delicious diner and breakfast. would come back again. Not sure there is much to do or see in this little townn as we did not stay long but possibility to do some nice hiking from there and not far from Cadaques which is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: room was above lounge so could hear television noise when on.

Of course, there are a lot of things to do or see around here, activities and possibilities: nature, culture, beaches, sports, gastronomy, wines, routes by car or bike... We are waiting for your return. Thanks for your time in writing this comment!

This so-called Rural Hotel, a stop on our walking tour of the Costa Brava was a very special surprise. We arrived on foot, navigating through the old stone streets of this small village. Once through the door every discovery was a pleasant one. Our room looked out onto the quiet, narrow cobbled street with floor to ceiling shuttered windows. Within the room there was a concealed tea and coffee making facility and a clever use of built-ins to store belongings. The bathroom was both modern and textural with lots of local stone. The common areas were even better. A large cozy sofa with books and magazines perched on a coffee table, a large TV screen facing it and lovely local arts and crafts were all around. The dining room, with several tables for guests, looks out on a lovely light well that is put to artful use. The breakfast was the best of our trip. On the buffet, in addition to the usual generous breakfast array was an entire prosciuto leg(?) held in a proper vise with a sharp knife for guests to slice themselves. A lovely touch. The decor throughout spoke of a tasteful and proud Catalan vibe, helping us to understand the area. The welcome from the owner was warm and thoughtful, serving us a requested dinner at 7:00 because we were too tired from our day-long hike to wait for a more usual local dinner time. The dinner consisted of beef with mushrooms, a local version of a French daube that was meltingly delicious. This, we were told, was made by the owner's mother and the very large portion, served family style, was finished to the last crumb by my husband and myself.

This inn is a gem. Beautiful design throughout and offers a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere both in your room and in the spacious common areas. The facility is very clean and well maintained. Great breakfast with a full variety of meats, cheeses, bread, cereals, juices, and hot beverages such as the now common pod/coffee machine, etc. I particularly enjoyed the lemon cake made fresh each morn. The honors bar is a very nice touch. Merce goes out of her way to make sure your needs are met. Her grade? A+.
