My 75 year old mother, my wife, our 9 year old son and I stayed here in early August one week before Hurricane Irene hit Eleuthera. We flew from the US to Nassua and then took a puddle jumper to Govenors Harbor. John, the manger of the property, met us at the airport. He had arranged a rental car for us and we followed him to the property. It was gorgeous - the views are spectacular. There are two very small islands just off shore that we snorkled and kayaked to. The house sits atop a sea grape and palm tree covered berm. To get to the beach there are 8 wooden steps followed by a 20 ft sloping walk, then another 10 or so wooden steps - really not bad at all and the eleveation from the deck allows for amazing views of all the different tropical water colors. The beach was perfect. Soft, slighlty pink sand - gin clear water. the beach has other houses on it, though not that many. Since we went in Hurricane season (we did have trip insurance, but thankfully did not need to use it), there were few other people. For 4 of the days, we were the only people on a 2-3 mile stretch of beach.
I packed a soft sided cooler and filled it with frozen bacon, chicken, steaks, ribs, brats etc... We had no problem going through customs in nassau. We ate out twice which was nice, but the house and views are so great and I don't mind cooking, so we cooked most nights and had sandwiches for lunch.
The snorkeling was great. My wife and I are divers, but chose not to on this trip since the snorkeling was so good and my mother and son could and did join us.
We spent most days snorkeling all morning, then a late lunch, more time at the beach, then a nap, then sundowners, great dinner - cards or a movie, wake up the next day and repeat!
The house has a good selection of DVD's, though they also have a lot of VHS movies, but no VHS player.
Power did go out most days for 5-10 mintues here or there once or twice a day - Island not house related. One day when it went out for over an hour, the water pump lost pressure and we lost water. John came out about 3-4 hours after my call and reprimed the pump.
No see ums are bad at dusk, but there is normally such a great breeze that they usually get blown away.
There are 2 kayaks and we took them out to the larger of the islands one day.
The highlight was probably the day we snorkled with 2 wild dolphins. We snorkled with them for about 2 hours - we just kept looking at each other - it was a fantastic experience for our son.
The people at the local stores and restaurants were very nice. Beer is expesnisve at about $45/case, but we saved so much on food that we came out ahead.
Everyday one of us would comment on how awesome the views are.
This was one of the msot relaxing vacations we have ever taken.
We hope to return.
