“Great Vacation”

The Great: The house is beautiful and well furnished. The big dining table is definitely the hang-out place in the house. The coffee maker can be a bit balky and I don’t recommend grinding beans as the grinder gets easily clogged even after cleaning. Use pre-ground coffee. The ice machine is really handy when you have six adults in the house. The washer/dryer are first class units.

The expansive sand flats in front of the house were wonderful to walk, being loaded with sand dollars and starfish.

The rocks/reefs in Cherokee Sound are a bit of a trip to get to but worth it for snorkeling or diving. We did a good bit of pole spearing for fish with modest success. Plenty of fish (mostly snappers and grunts) are there in 5-10 feet of water but few over 1-2 lbs. Lobster season was open but we didn’t see any. The higher prevailing winds in January limited us some so we didn’t venture to the outermost reefs north and south of Duck Cay. If you are pole spearing, I definitely recommend using spear tips with multiple prong points as the fish hang out in tight spaces in the coral and were pretty skittish. The multiple prongs will significantly improve your hit rate. We were very sensitive to getting any speared fish out of the water quickly and we didn’t see any sharks, though a group of porpoises came very close by one day and scared the poo out of us for a brief moment. Tip: bring a handheld GPS and use the Bing Map link provided by Jamie and Donna to plot points to more easily locate rock piles and reefs.

Bonefishing was a very pleasant surprise. All we had heard before coming to Abaco was how hard it was to catch them without a guide, a perfect presentation, the perfect rod, lure, etc. Nonsense. The boys went out in the cove north of the house on three different days, drifting in the boat and spray casting lead head crappie jigs, catching several (the bones hit the jig on the drop and often within 5 feet of the cast landing point). Word of caution here: have A LOT of backing on your spinning reals. The first bone took off with 100+ yards of line quick as a wink! We purchased/brought inexpensive medium heavy 6’6” travel rods, ones that break down to fit in luggage, and brought simple spinning reels with 10 lb test. They worked great. Bring a lot of jigs because the barracuda will eat their fair share. Tie on a fluorocarbon leader to reduce breakoffs.

As you have figured out by now, adding the small whaler to your rental is critical. And make sure you travel over to Spit Cay, as you can find beautiful shells on the shores there. The water in front of the house is really shallow, so you have to anchor the whaler out a bit from shore when taking a break from boating.

The Not So Great: The biting midges aka no-see-ums made it impossible to be outside near the house or on the deck any time of the day, and morning/evening time was gruesome. It didn’t really matter if the wind was blowing or you had dipped your entire body in Deep Woods Off, you were gonna get attacked in overwhelming numbers. BTW, DEET is the only thing that has any effect on these painful biters. Maybe it’s different in the summer, but these midges were so unpleasant it will keep us from coming back unless Jamie and Donna go nuclear with chemical spraying around the grounds. What’s the point of having such a beautiful deck if you can’t sit on it?

General Stuff: As advertised, groceries are very expensive, some 40% higher than in the states. Maxwell’s is the best grocery on Abaco but groceries do not sell beer or wine in the Bahamas. And if you arrive on Sunday there is only one liquor store open. We liked Snappa’s in Marsh Harbour for eating out.

Take the ferry over to Hopetown. It’s an easy walk around and the lighthouse is pretty neat to walk up for a great view. The only negative is trying to get rides back and forth across the harbor there. The harbor ferries are free but it can be a pain getting one without a pretty long wait. Hitching rides when someone pulls up to a dock is a good idea. Just give them a nice tip!

“Amazing place”
Reviewed 17 July 2015 for a stay in February 2015

Easy to find, even more easy to fall in love. The most amazing honeymoon one could ask for. Right on the beach, sunrises are amazing and the kayaks are so much fun. The rental boat is advised if you want to explore the bay.

“Casuarina rental house on bone fishing flat”

I've stayed all over the Abacos and James and Donna Rees rental house stands way above all the rest, bar none. It's brand new and built by quality craftsmen and it shows on the inside and outside. The views from the large decks are breathtaking. Everything about this house was carefully thought out and it shows!
You can relax on the new leather furniture or entertain friends in style, there's plenty of room and an abundance of anything you need in the kitchen or bar. The bedrooms are roomy and the beds are very plush and comfortable.
We were there on a bone fishing trip. You can walk right out the door and catch bones on a beautiful white flat or walk down the beech until you see a school of bones coming your way. There is also a boat with motor that will take you to numerous flats around the area.
The Rees live right down the street so if you ever need help or just information, James and Donna will bend over backwards to make your visit the very best!
