My 17 year old daughter and I spent a week in St John in January. We kept admiring the beautiful big catamaran anchored in the Cruz Bay harbor and asked about it. We were delighted to find that SOMA was available for half and full day charters!
We took a full day charter and enjoyed sailing to the Soggy Dollar Bar in Jost Van Dyke, BVI. It was so much more fun than sailing on a traditional mono-hull sailboat! The ride was smooth (a little wet sometimes, but that was fine with us) and very fast. The flat trampoline-like "deck" surface took just a little getting used to, but was spacious and quite comfortable.
Nils and Meredith, captain and crew, were delightful and very informative about other things to do in the islands. It seemed that they knew almost everyone at the Soggy Dollar (where we had a delicious lunch) and we felt like we were getting the "inside" view of the islands!
We enjoyed our day on SOMA so much that we went out a second time, this time in the afternoon with another couple. Nils sailed to a private cove on the southern side of St. John where we anchored and swam and snorkled . There were sea turtles and not a sign of civilization anywhere. Sailing back to Cruz Bay, we watched the sun setting. It was heavenly.
The racing catamaran SOMA offers an absolutely extraordinary sailing experience, and one I highly recommend to land lubbers and avid sailors alike.
