Stayed for one night on business. Didn't use the leisure facilities this time.
Pros:
Efficient reservation, check-in and check-out; friendly and pleasant staff; three course evening meal that was very tasty and served efficiently in a pleasant restaurant; pleasant breakfast experience - plenty of choice and served by friendly staff; comfortable lounge; spacious bedroom with tea and coffee making facilities; plenty of parking space.
Cons: The superior room that I stayed in hardly deserved to be labelled 'superior' - the room was rather depressing with basic furniture and had a slightly musty smell, the bathroom was no better than a 2 star standard.

To sum up, I enjoyed my stay, but I have reservations as to whether the hotel gives value for money. I paid £85 for a 'superior' room including continental breakfast and extra for a cooked breakfast; my three course evening meal came to approximately £27, sans grog. I also felt that the hotel lacked a 'Welsh' welcome, apart from the word 'Croeso..' written on the black-board as you go through the front door, and even the local news on the BBC channel picked up BBC West rather than BBC Wales.

Thank you for yoir review and glad you enjoyed your stay and we have a rolling programme of refurbishment for the bedrooms but to be honest getting into them to do this is difficult as the hotel is practically full year round so we must be doing something right.

Do hope you will use us again and appreciate you taking the time to post this review.

Kindest regards

David

My friend and i recently booked use of the spa for the afternoon, and i have to say it was lovely. We had treatments which were 1st class and spent a lovely afternoon chilling and using the facilities.

Would highly recommend for the spa and could not fault the service received when we had afternoon tea in the bistro.

My wife and I had stayed at the Nant Ddu some years ago and at that time the hotel was a smaller and more characterful. Since then it appears to have been acquired by a hotel group and has been expanded with more rooms and a pool and spa facilities. This does mean it has lost some of its charm but I would still say it represents good value generally.
Since our stay some years back we have also made some acquisitions in the shape of a dog and a 17 month old child so our requirements are somewhat changed from a couple looking for a romantic break etc.
We stayed a Thursday and Friday night in consecutive weeks and had a "courtyard" room on each occasion as these are the only rooms where pets are accepted. The rooms are about average size for a UK hotel and are perfectly adequate with a comfortable double bed, TV, en-suite etc. They do lack some charm and have only a small window that effectively looks out over the car park. However, as mentioned it does depend on what you are looking for and for us this was fine.
The spa and pol facilities were well maintained and although we were advised that times for children's access to the pool were limited we were also told that generally these rules were not tightly adhered to and we would be fine using the pool with our child whenever we wanted.
Buffet breakfast was very good with a sizeable range of options. Cooked breakfast was extra but represented good value. Dinner was not cheap but neither was it outrageous and the food was excellent, this was one aspect of the hotel that had not changed since our previous visit some years before.
The overriding plus point on our recent visits however was the general level of service, which was excellent. We ordered room service o one occasion and this was delivered quickly and efficiently and at no extra charge which is often the case in some hotels. The staff made a fuss over our child and were very helpful and accommodating in taking care of us. Nothing was too much trouble and staff were always polite.
Were there downsides? Of course and some of these were quite irritating as they were fairly obvious and could have been easily remedied. The doors to the courtyard rooms are like house front doors that have a kind of fan-light window in them. Consequently the outside lights shines through them at night which is quite distracting and enough to keep you awake at times. I have to admit we took to hanging a towel over the window the cut out the light. As mentioned these rooms are also a bit non-descript while being perfectly adequate in all other respects. The car park fills up quite readily especially as many non-residents come to use the restaurant so if you are arriving late you can find yourself quite some way from your room. Around the back of the hotel but adjacent to the car park are the bins etc. but this area appeared to have been used as something of a general dumping ground and was just unsightly. Most guests would probably never notice this and I only saw it as I was walking the dog but it just seemed a bit unnecessarily untidy and thoughtless. EVening dining times in the restaurant were not very suitable if you had young children like us as they did not start service until 7pm, although you could get the same menu in the bar from 6pm, which is what we did one night, on another occasion we order room service which was also available earlier.
We did you the spa facilities for a treatment and although the treatment was absolutely fine the "therapist" was somewhat charmless!
We found these negative points well within what we could accept, given our circumstances and the price we were paying. We had a slight sense of disappointment at them rather than outright indignation and I hate to say it but in some respects these issues seemed to be endemic in the local population.
Having said all that the positives greatly outweighed these fairly minor issues and we would happily stay here again, though it is worth saying we got a fairly good rate for the first night (Thursday) which the hotel matched for the Friday and then matched again for our stay the following week. Even if we had been paying full rate I think we would still have felt we got good value based on the quality of service we received.

Thank you for posting your review and so pleased that your stay with small child and dog proved to be enjoyable as this is often a difficult combination to satisfy!.

Unlike a lot of hotels we are happy to acccept dogs in some of our rooms and this tend to be the rooms with easy outside access [for obvious reasons] and as a dog owner myself for nearly 40 years I am pleased we are able to allow families to stay with us "en masse" withoutn the added expense etc of kennels.

We are about to fence off the area to the rear of the hotel as unfortunately we all need an area to put "rubbish" etc, and have delayed this to ensure that our new state of the art sewerage system is operating correctly as we need unhindered access to this area if there are any teething problems. To date there havent been so we shall tidy up the area you passed while dogwalking soon.

Appreciate your comments about meal times and glad we were able to help, and thank you for your comments about the lights shining in at night and I have asked Adrian and Vanessa to look at this, and I will check for myself on my next visit to the hotel.

Hope to see you all back at Nant Ddu soon.

Kindest regards

David

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

Spent the night before Valentines at the Nant Ddu. Haven't been there a for a while and was disappointed by the lack of character in the hotel. It used to ooze charm and character.
It has such a wonderful setting but inside it is becoming a travellers hotel, the sort I stayed in the 70s as a rep.
The toilet was unflushed, the windowsills uncleaned and the bathroom was generally looking tatty. I know hotels get knocked about but a little attention to detail wouldn't go amiss. The food was average as was the service. What was to be a romantic dinner became an overlit canteen session with all the tables lined up in school dinner fashion.
The one bright note was a large pool with steam room and sauna but by the time I came to use them my mind was made up.
What a crying shame.

Thanks for your review and I have asked Vanessa to have a word with the housekeepers as not sure what happened here, and apologies.

If you are a seasoned "visitor" to Nant Ddu then you will note that the tables are exactly where they have always been and not sure I agree with your description and sorry you found our food only average.

Not sure what your expectations were but the 40,000+ people who make the trek to visit the Nant Ddu each year to dine in this hotel miles from anywhere in the middle of the Brecon National Park seem to like what we are doing, but I am so sorry you were disappointed.

Sorry we werent what you expected, but the vast majority seemed to like what the team are doing at the Nant Ddu.

Kindest regards

David
