Owner description: The S/V ATABEYRA is a 69', traditionally rigged trading schooner that retired from cargo service almost 20 years ago. The vessel traded for years between Hispaniola and the Turks & Caicos Islands carrying such commodities as rum , beer, produce, plants, building materials and even a few critters. The ship has been refit as a charter vessel and now stays close to home in the sheltered waters of Grace Bay and the Caicos Cays of Turks and Caicos Islands. The S/V ATABEYRA is the perfect platform for learning hands on operation of traditional sailing craft, for exploring the exquisite undersea world and many islands that surround us or just lounging on her spacious, shaded decks. No vessel in the TCI charter fleet is as large or as versatile. Sun Charters and the ATABEYRA crew offer our guests a unique opportunity to get real sailing experience aboard the last of the tropical trading schooners. Being a gaff-rigged vessel carrying two headsails, there are lots of lines to pull, many sails to tend, and the skipper will even be happy to let you take the helm. Feel the past come alive as we sail through the uninhabited chain of Caicos Cays the same way it was done hundreds of years ago. The Cays were once the lair of the infamous lady pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Reid, and the waters and surrounding islands remain basically untouched since that time. The Crew of the Good Ship Atabeyra are proud that she is overwhelmingly the boat the residents choose when recreating in the Caicos Cays.

We did the 1/2 day snorkel/sail on the Atabeyra 3 days after we arrived on Provo. There were so many companies to choose from but we like the idea of being on the sailboat. We were not disappointed with our choice as the experience is not only unique but the crew were top notch and provide some of our best snorkel and memory experiences. They take you to a great area of reef away from where all the other tour boats go so you are not fighting with crowds of people. Next they take you to an isolated beach where you can hunt for shells, swim, snorkel or just relax. They put the sail up on the return back to the Blue Haven Marina and you enjoy a relaxing ride while munching on chips and salsa and drinking whatever you like. During the full trip they provide water, pop, beer, wine and rum punch - but be careful - it goes down quite easily while you are lying or sitting enjoying the trip. The crew is top notch - kudos to Junior, Capt T, Adam and the girl who makes the best punch (sorry forgot her name). We enjoyed our trip so much we booked a sunset cruise with them the next evening and another 1/2 day sail/snorkel the next week(they only go out for this with the general public Thursdays as the rest of the time they are a private charter). I also have to note the experience was different both times as the first we snorkeled the outer Emerald Reef, the second the inner reef, the first we went to Fort George Island and the second time it was Pine Cay (all depends on weather, wind, etc.) We were also impressed that the second time there were only 6 of us who showed up as it first appeared cloudy with possible rain but turned out beautiful and we felt like it was a private charter - almost any other company would have cancelled with that few people (first time was about 22-24 but was not crowded at all). They are top rated in my book and we will definitely be booking with them when next we visit Provo.

We took the half day trip during our stay and were very pleased with the experience! Great boat and crew made for a relaxing day of snorkeling and cruising. We lucked out with weather too which always helps! We have done other snorkeling g trips and this one proved to be a bit more sophisticated. Just depends on what you are looking for! Being pregnant it was a perfect balance for both the of us.

We had a fantastic time on the Atabeyra on our first day in Provo! David, Tibi, Willi, Adam and Junior provided just the perfect combination of fun, relaxation, attention and spontaneity to our trip. Though it was not the best day for snorkeling, by the end of our tour I wanted for nothing from our day. We had a gorgeous sail, learned lots about the island, stopped to swim/snorkel at at couple of locations, even all jumped off the boat at one point and had the boat gentle pull us along -- so much fun! The other 14 or people on our boat were delightful and easy going. Wish they had more public trips. We for SURE would have taken another sail this week with them and will again on our next trip. It will be the first thing we reserve!

My husband and I joined the Atabeyra crew for the group half-day sail and snorkel trip, and I can't recommend them more strongly! Compared to the tour companies whose motorboats you'll see frequently around Grace Bay, packed full and blasting loud music, this is a much more authentic and personal experience.

The boat is spotless and the group can spread out across the deck-- we loved sitting at the prow and soaking up the sun! Even though the water was too choppy on that day to snorkel out on the reef, Captain Thibi took us to an old shipwreck and the mangrove cay, where we saw many types of fish, starfish, sea urchins, and a gorgeous sting ray. We also had fun jumping off the boat and being dragged behind it as it gracefully sailed along.

If you are looking for a beautiful sailboat, knowledgeable crew, opportunities to swim and snorkel, and yes-- delicious rum punch-- this is the trip for you.

We did the glow worm cruise with Atabeyra and could not be more satisfied. The yatch is excellent, the crew really takes care of you. The glow worms were also a treat. I highly recommend this company for a relaxed evening cruise and if you happen to be in T&C 3 - 4 days after a full moon, then a glow worm cruise.
