“A peaceful paradise”
Reviewed 31 October 2011 for a stay in June 2010

The view from Belair Garden Cottage’ veranda on the island of Carriacou, 20 mins flight time by SVG air from Grenada, is likely one of the best views of the entire Grenadine archipelago – all the way up to St. Vincent – and is possible one of the most stunning views in the world. The cottage is based on a ‘Janet House’ (one of those clever prefab constructions shipped to Grenada after Hurricane Janet devastated the islands in 1954.) It is brightly painted, pretty and comfortable and lacked for nothing - what it doesn't have you don't need (like TV). Mike & Becca, the owners, are wonderfully helpful and kind and Becca's prepared meals are excellent, good value and ideal for taking on picnics. They even supply a pre-loaded mobile phone so you can call all the necessary numbers, taxis, boat hire, etc and the emergency service, should they ever be needed on this beautiful and safe island. You're right out of the way at Belair, so a vehicle is recommended. Exploring Carriacou is great fun even starting with hiring your essential Suzuki 4x4 from Mr Sunkey down in Hillsborough. The island is unspoilt by mass tourism, there are few hotels (and none of note) and frankly not a destination if you're interested in finer dining (save that treat for Grenada e.g. The Beach House and Aquarium amongst others - young Rhodes' restaurant is okay too but pricy.). Recommended on Carriacou is Hardwood Cafe on Paradise Beach, for down to earth local food, as well as the sweet old ladies BBQing chicken and ribs on an oil drum chargriller at the X roads in Hillsborough – Carriacou’s main town (pop: 600). In a town that small, you can’t miss ‘em. The roti shop in the high street is good too - try the lambi (conch meat) Roti, btw, is a wrap containing a mild curry of vegetables and whatever meat you fancy – mainly chicken or lambi. Drinkers are recommended to try (very carefully) the local Jack Iron rum. It comes direct from Barbados, just for C’cou. You’ll see it in supermarkets on Grenada but that's the supersanitized and weaker stuff – the real McCoy’s only to be found on Carriacou. Seek advice from Mike & Becca before buying (and trying) Some say it can be used to light BBQs and as a fuel additive! Carriacou's beaches are idyllic - often you're the only person(s) on them and Paradise Beach deserves its name. A day long round island trip is highly recommended. Also a trip on the Osprey (ferry) to Petit Martinique is essential and the sight (from Belair) of the sun rising in the morning from behind it (or nearby Petit St Vincent) is utterly lovely. We spent two weeks on Carriacou and covered pretty much every inch of it and photographed it to death, so I'm happy to offer suggestions & answer any questions. I have a detailed review which I’d be happy to supply by email.
In short; Carriacou is the ultimate 'slow-down' destination; the inhabitants are gentle and helpful, & sometimes a bit shy. If driving, observe tradition & offer lifts to folks walking in the heat of the day. It's a great way of getting to know locals and to absorb some C'cou culture. NB: Best view of Carriacou is from the hospital car park - a stone's throw from Belair Garden Cottage - a bit of paradise – oh how I wish I could be there – right now.

Management Response
31 Oct 2011
Hi There Anna & Stanislaw,
We are so delighted you chose our cottage as your honeymoon hideaway. We admire your determination, traveling all the way from Poland, to experience your first visit to the Caribbean. Carriacou seems to have left a very good impression on you both, proving it is worth the effort to get here. Perhaps you'll return for a future anniversary.
Cheers,
Becca & Michael
