We went to Condal with our teenagers and really enjoyed it. The servers were friendly and informative about the menu. The food was delicious. And we really enjoyed the ambiance. Really enjoyed it!

We have been here twice now for tapas, which are excellent. We enjoy sitting on the rooftop terrace.

Condal came highly recommended by a local with good taste. We were not disappointed. Before sitting down we were taken in by two waiters who were courteous, friendly, knowledgable, and accommodating. The owner came out and greeted us and made us feel at home. She seemed willing to make us anything -- even if it was not on the menu. But two of the specials sounded so good that we ordered them, along with an avocado and shrimp salad.

DECOR
Condal is a small place across the street from the Rennaisance hotel in Condado. The front room holds about six tables with a long bar that seats another dozen or so. The front of the restaurant is glass with a metal sculpture of various curved shapes that look like bubbles captured between two glass plates. The wall behind the bar is also glass. It's view has bee robbed by the restaurant next door, but a row of bamboo provides some organic greenery to what would otherwise be a drab wall of the neighboring establishment. The feel of the room is like cool jazz.

There is a second room in back, but we did not venture back there to explore its size and decor.

THE FOOD
This visually lovely and very fresh salad was presented in a 4-inch tower on a bed of spinach. Two whole shrimp sat on top. The sliced avocado was mixed with shrimp, red onion, cilantro, and a perfectly balanced vinaigrette. It was rich and filling.

The veal chops included six small chops. A first nibble elicited an eye roll (inhale?) of appreciation from my friend. She reported that they were tender, flavorful, and delicately seasoned with a subtle blend of spices that melded so well that their identies could not be established.

The salmon was served in a creamy mango sauce that tasted a bit like creme anglais, though the owner insisted that the delicate vanilla flavor came from mango and not vanilla. The sauce alone made the trip worthwhile. I love when I eat something delicious that I can't figure out. It is the reason that i eat out. The salmon was covered in a pico de gallo that substituted mango for tomato. It added a slightly piquant zest as a counterpoint to the mango sauce.

We enjoyed their lovely tres leches for dessert.

We only discovered Condal on our last night in San Juan and lacked the opportunity to more fully sample their menu. But had we more time, we would have explored further and we look forward to indulging in Condal our next visit.

THE SERVICE
Service in Puerto Rico is generally leisurely. Ordering pizza can be a two-hour affair, and getting a waiter's attention can be a frustrating ordeal. In contrast, Condal's professional staff were attentive and solicitous. They kept themselves accessible and provided us with useful guidance and assistance throughout our meal.

I agree with another reviewer who calls Condal a "gem."

As visitors to Puerto Rico we were looking for a meal that was local, inviting and inexpensive. We got all of this with Condal. If you like tapas this is a great place to visit with a wide menu and tasty food.

The good: friendly, eager to please service, nice rooftop patio. The mediocre: well, the food. We ordered 4 or 5 tapas and a meat paella. There was nothing wrong with any of the dishes. But none of them were great either. The meat paella was the best of what we ordered, but the tapas were pretty bland all around. Bottom line: If you don't like spice or strong flavors and want a competent, bland meal, this is your spot. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
