I have been visiting the Rio Grande from I was 9 years old. I am now 25 years old and I still thoroughly enjoy this river. The water is beautiful and cool mostly and rafting is a very popular thing for the locals. The people are very friendly in Portland and Jamaica overall. Definately a must visit!

As a descendant of a maroon, I grew up swimming in this river and climbing the falls just outside my aunts home. As Jamaica's largest river, it is known for its rafting but it has so much more to give. Returning to Jamaica we opted for this rather than dunns river. The locals would say Grande nuh like stranger" in other words it can be a dangerous river if your not familiar with river swimming. We chose to go and take the children... there are many areas along the line of the Rio Grande which is 3,034 km in length.. you can stop and take in the views swim at your leisure in a safe and clean environment and it doesn't cost you a thing. Furthermore, if your a descendant of a maroon your no stranger to Grande!.
This is unspoit nature at its best if you want something away from the hustle and bustle of the beautiful Dunns River you may find this a wonderful alternative.

It's a lovely spot, but not very big, the rafting session is short and not very exciting. There isn't much to see, so pass this one up for better options around the island.

The stunning beauty of this river valley and the peacefulness of this relaxing few hours is quite moving. There were few people other than a few fellow rafters and very little sign of human activity like houses. Planted banana fields were the only real evidence of human activity for most of the trip.

Though we were met shortly after we started by a lady on a raft "bar" selling drinks, I suggest you bring a hat drinks and some sunscreen.

Also, Google maps misguides you just before you get there. Do NOT turn left. Continue straight. No left turns.
