If you go to Portland this is a MUST!!! I had the most amazing 3 hours, and the captain who lovely and very knowledgeable. We swam alongside the raft and lazed upon it with the sun beating down. It created a feeling of serenity and peace I was sad when it was over, make sure you stop and have a rum punch as this just makes the trip..

River Rafting on Rio Grande is an awesome and relaxing excursion for a few hours. It was definitely worth the time and money. For full video report search for SailingKnottyMaria on youtube.

River Rafting:
As much as it is very uneventful, it is super fun. The guide/captain will go up the river making it look super easy while you are relaxing and taking in the nature. Then he will offer you (Tom Sawyer style) to try piloting the raft. It is quite challenging, but a great deal of fun.

Getting there:
Located near Port Antonio, Portland Parish. As you are driving on A4 and you pass over the river you will see the rafts under the bridge and quite a few Raft Captains will wave you down. When I say Captains, I mean it. They have the license to operate the raft granted by the government. From there you will have two options, the shorter and the longer route. We took the shorter options (2 Hrs) but there is also a 4 hr option further up the river.
They will let you park your vehicle in nearby village, Snow Hill, and take you to the river via their truck.

Price: Well...it is, as with most things in Jamaica, negotiable. But be prepared to pay $60 US per raft for the shorter 2 hr run, and $80 US for the 4 hr one.

I went with my family the youngest 3 years old and the oldest and they all had a good time. The river does get deep but it was fun. They have life vest and Answer all questions. You don’t have to get wet unless you want to. When it gets too sunny they have umbrellas as well. Relax and enjoy the ride and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Rafting down the Rio Grande is a must do activity when in Port Antonio. $90 USD for two people, its about a 2 hour trek down in absolutely serenity. There is a spot to stop for lunch - Belindas which is highly, highly recommended.
