After having spent several Christmas in hotels around the Caribbean, this year we decided to try to stay in holiday rentals for a change. On Holiday Rentals we found this semi detached house somewhere between St. Anne and St. François, in the French Guadeloupe. We booked for a week, and looked forward to coming to this tropical island.
Right before we traveled, we contacted the owner Rosaline for driving directions. She replied promptly, with clear instructions. We followed her directions after arriving at the airport, and found ourselves in front of the property around 10 pm, where Rosaline was waiting for us and showed us into the house.
The rental house, on top of the garage, is located next to the house where Rosaline and her family lives, with a nice clean swimming pool in between. The first floor is the sitting room, with a well-equipped kitchen. Here you will find a toilet and a room for laundry. Going upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and a baby cot, the other with a leveled bed. Each has its own AC, TV and walk-in wardrobe. The ACs are on between 9pm to 8am next morning, which enables a good sleep. What probably could be added is reading light by the bed. There is a large bathroom with shower as well. The house is good for a whole family of at least 5 people, including a small baby.
The kitchen has all the amenities a family can desire, fridge, stove, oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, rice cooker. What is missing is dishwasher. One might need to buy some coffee filters, cooking oil, pepper, and voilà, dinner is served.
The toilets are all equipped with mosquito windows , what a positive surprise! The water is hot and plenty, the drainage fast. There is no electricity for shaving appliance in the toilets however.
Sleeping quality is good since, with some care, there are almost no mosquitos in the room, and the mattress is firm. We did bring our own mosquito net though. The TV has satellite box, with many French and local channels. A radio with CD player is also available. Downstairs in the sitting room there is no AC but a fan, which is adequate since we sat on the terrace most of the time.
The general impression is that the place is very clean, well thought out, comfortable and convenient. It is France, after all. The pool is small but cosy, with a shower right next.
The terrace is where we spent most of the time, with a sea view. The table is for 6 people, with a hammock right to the next. There is no exterior electricity socket for a fan. One might set up a mosquito coil to keep the insects away.
The Internet Wi-Fi is available and the speed is 3 mbps, which is acceptable. For some unknown reason the signal is weak in the room, and it's best on the terrace, especially after 9pm. Maybe they need to install a repeater.
The road to the property is quite bumpy, it's not paved. The property is very close to the sea, but still you will need a car to the nearest beach, which is good for wind surfing. Toward St Anne there is a Leader Price where you can buy groceries. In both St Anne and St François there are many restaurants and markets.
The owner Rosaline is very friendly and helpful, even though we don't speak much French we had no problems in getting all the necessary information.
In short, we find this property very good value for money, clean, convenient and suitable for a big family.
