My wife and I stayed at the Bahia Principe Luxury Ambar in Punta Cana for 5 nights in April 2021, traveling from the USA. We are 30 and 27 years old and only speak English. Off the bat, one of the other biggest tips i can provide is BRING LOW DENOMINATION BILLS! It is like pulling teeth trying to get change for a $20. You'll want to tip the wait staff/ room service, etc. I tried to put most important info in this review first ( i know it's long but i really think you'll find it useful. i wish someone wrote something like this for us before we booked).

Coming out of the airport, someone almost immediately grabs your bags and takes them to the airport entrance. It's hard to tell these guys no because they act like they don't speak english (or actually don't- there is a pretty big language barrier in the Dominican, I feel like). If you're feeling brave just grab your stuff and find the exit. It was nice having someone show us where to go though. Everyone expects tips, but of course, they are not necessary. I recommend booking transport through the hotel with the Coming2 company. It was like $33 for round trip far for two people, which i thought was very reasonable. The Coming2 employees wear bright green shirts which were easy to spot.

The Resort:
First thing to know, there are multiple smaller areas within the larger resort. The Luxury Ambar is the adults only section, and there were only two other sections open at the time (about 4-5 others were closed due to COVID). You have access to basically only the other pools, but there's no reason to not go to your own. There will be different bracelets they give you for the different sections you stay in. You will be denied at buffets, dinners, and bars if you have the wrong one. Assume everything i talk about in this review is for the Luxury Ambar. Ambar is in the bottom right section of the larger resort. It is closest to the beach and as mentioned earlier, adults only. We recommend checking out the night time activities and poola activities as well. We did two of them at night (usually in the lobby), and they were both dance performances from the same dance group. I'm sure COVID played a role here. Room service did not restock our mini bar daily as promised and we had to call the front desk to have them restock it. The room was very humid. The clothes in my luggage felt constantly damp and papers we had in the drawers curled due to the humidity.

The Pool:
The pool is beautiful and we ended up spending more time there than the beach, which is just a bit further past it. The swim up bar IS CLOSED FOR COVID! The portion of the bar that is above the pool is open. You will not be served sitting at bar stools in the water. There is awesome wait staff walking around taking drink orders otherwise. They bust their butts! Go early to get a good spot. There is two lunch buffets open next to the pool bar and a small cooking area right off the beach with some pretty darn good paella that they make daily. There are plenty of pool chairs and cabanas that are open. They are cleaned regularly.

A couple additional pool tips:
1. We recommend bringing your own large Yeti mug so you take less trips to the bar.
2. Ask for rouble pours of liquor. The drinks they make are not strong.
3. Bring your own inflatable raft/tube. You'll with you had one and are like $30 otherwise at the shops.

The Beach:
The beach is just past the pool and is also very nice. The beach chairs are spaced apart nicely. There are open chairs, white roofed cabanas and palm tree cabanas. Either are great and provide shade. We didn't end up doing it, but you can rent up to 1 hour of water activities a day. The rental place is at the end of the beach by the restaurants.

The food:
With our reservation, we got a dinner each night which you had to book in advance. The ones that were open were: Indian, Greek, Italian, Gourmet, MEAT, Mexican. I noticed that there were people in the Rodizio and the Fish Market as well, but wasn't sure what was going on there.

Our favorites in order from best to worst were:
1. Indian- very surprised this was our favorite but the presentation and tastes of the dishes were really outstanding.
2. Gourmet- as gourmet as you can get at an all inclusive i suppose. Don't have your hopes too high though. The tenderloin i ordered was cooked pretty well, but under seasoned. You can try some interesting dishes here like sea urchin and squid ink scallops.
3. Italian- I'm italian and have grown up eating home-made italian means my whole life so i am hard to impress when it comes to italian cuisine. The pasta was pretty good though.
4. MEAT- It smelled SO AMAZING in here, but the food did not align with the smell. I ordered the ribeye, but they gave me a thin sirloin which again was under-seasoned. If you order the dish that tastes like it smelled in there, please let me know because i'm curious.
5. Mexican- just not that good. we thought it would be fun to do a Taco Tuesday here but the menu didn't thrill. I got the pork knuckle to be a bit adventurous. It tasted okay with the sauce, but otherwise just wasn't impressed with anything else.

There is also a sports bar with American food like wings, chicken sandwiches and burgers. This one is open until 2am and seemed to be the only late night spot to go. The burger i had here was pretty good actually. The buffets were unimpressive as well, but i never had high expectations for them. I thought there would be more selection. Each one re-used the same options. If i had to pick, i'd say the Las Olas Beach House one was the best. Just fill up at the buffets and get back to the pool/beach. When you check in, make sure that you write down what the hours of these are. There were times when we were hungry but had to wait like two hours for one to open. There definitely seems liked times that there wasn't any option available for food which was frustrating. At an all-inclusive, i don't want to have to plan around meals and when i'm hungry, i want to eat.

Excursion:
We booked an excursion in the middle of the week to break up our stay and check out what else the Dominican Republic has to offer. We booked the Samana trip, which was all day. You leave at 6:50am so pro tip: order room service because the buffet is not open that early. The excursion has a very glamorous write-up but i was disappointed with delivery. First you take a big bus about an hour and a half to a port where you hop on a cheap catamaran to another part of the island. From there you get on a "safari truck" which they advertise going through the jungle but really it's through one of the small towns there (still cool, but jungle would have been cooler). The truck, again, is run down and can only be classified as a "Safari truck". because of the open seat concept. The first probably 3-4 hours of the trip is different modes of transportation to finally the ranch. The ranch is where you go horseback riding (probably the coolest part of the trip) to reach the waterfall. Our guides were awesome and let us ride the horses on our own for a bit with minimal supervision. We are young and healthy though, so if the guides will use their best judgement on what is safe and wouldn't do anything you didn't want to. The guides smoke very minimal English and only work off of tipe. They did a very great job, and we wish we brought more for them. Anyway, you get to the falls which are truly beautiful. You can go swimming here and take some pictures. There was a guy with parrots there. They expect tips. You spend about 30 minutes here and take the horses back, the safari truck back, and have a Dominican lunch at the ranch. The food was actually really good and you can taste a bit of the culture. You then take the catamaran to Bacardi Island for about an hour and a half. This catamaran is when you get your "alcohol/drinks" that they advertise when you book it, which consists of a guy walking around with warm rum and a refrigerated 2L bottle of coke in a small dixie cup. It's actually laughable and is outrageously false advertising. The island beach was little different than the resort beach, but it was nice to relax after a long day. You then take the catamaran one last time back to the tour bus and then back home. We returned at 6pm. The $160 per person price point is very expensive for what you get ammenity-wise, as you only get lunch, crappy small and limited drinks, spending extra money on tips and whatnot, and most of your time is spent traveling on cheap vehicles. What you do get a safe time off of the resort and some cool photo ops. Just wanted to let you know! We booked this through Coming2 as well.

All in all, we had a blast. COVID certainly played a role in how we perceived things and limited what we were able to experience. I'd probably check out different resorts if we come back to Punta Cana. You won't regret booking Bahia Principe if you are deciding though!

Just visited from April 3 till April 10. Had an awesome time!! The room was awesome the housekeeping kept us stocked just give them a couple dollars and they take care of you like you would never believe. The safety measures were awesome the staff was incredible. Had the right amount of entertainment at the pool it was very fun!! The restaurants we’re great and the view for lunch was amazing!! I also asked for room service which was not included and do to the gout I suffered they brought me food to the room. If you needed anything they would always accommodate you. They did an amazing job during these times of Covid making our trip so enjoyable. I highly recommend this resort. Somethings maybe shut down that is out of the control but they did the best they could to make our trip very memorable. We’ve been here a couple times and every time we go they just try to do the best they can for you you will not be left down!!!

I traveled to Punta Cana for my sons wedding. I have never visited the DR, and after this experience probably never will again. The wedding party who booked in the " block of rooms" were supposed to be placed in the same area, and we were supposed to all have the same " exclusivity" ...as we paid the same rate. I was given a lesser bracelet which did not allow me to take my grandchildren to the same pool area as those who received the VIP level bracelets. The hotel refused to fix this issue and so some of us could not go to the same places as others. I was put in a ground floor room, which was musty and damp...all my clothes that I hung in the closets or put in drawers stunk like an old basement ... the shower water ran all over the floor and right out into the hallway if I did not put towels down to catch the run. My A/C and ceiling fan did work...however the room was so dark ( 10 watt light bulbs) it was like a dungeon at night. The bedding was horrible too, just white sheets on the bed, NO BEDSPREAD or QUILT, just a nasty, scratchy thin blanket in the musty basement closet...I asked for another one, it was not better. Scratchy and old...
The day of the wedding we were not picked up and driven to the beach area ( the ride NEVER showed up) so we walked over. Nothing was ready even though we were all late. There were people on the beach, walking by or gawking, taking pics too. Ridiculous. I would rate the food overall a 3 out of 5, lots of food but all buffet lines ,most overcooked. The best for me was the omelet guy for breakfast. The staff were never in a hurry to get you drinks or coffee in the a.m. They would stand around and BS with each other, had to wave them down most times. The rum tasted like burnt sugar...and the wine was awful. I stuck to the local beer for the most part... I would say that the staff was not "unfriendly" but there seemed to be an inability to understand English quite frequently.
If you're planning a destination wedding, don't go here. Our experience was very bad, and basically they have your money already and you get what you get... what a letdown after months and months of excitement and anticipation! I want a refund...

This was the worst vacation we have ever had. Not only was the hotel manager (Lucas) a nightmare, the whole staff to include the wedding planner (Estephanie) were clueless and had no idea what was going on.

We booked a hotel that wasnt the one we ended up at. Our contract was for all of our family and friends to be together during the wedding and enjoy the same activities. The hotel was supposed to have kid areas and water parks but it was closed. So the one that was open wasnt open to all of our guest like it was supposed to be.

All of our guest were supposed to be in the same building, instead they were scattered all across the resort. We paid for this on our contract and this was brought up to Lucas and he denied us and told us that it wasnt part of it but wouldnt sit there for us to show him he was wrong. Estephanie saw the contract after Lucas left.

On our wedding day, according to the timeline which i took a picture of from Estephanies folder, our wedding was supposed to be "seculuded" and set up by 330pm for a 4pm wedding. We were supposed to be picked up in front of the rooms. None of this happened. We ended up walking down to the wedding area to find the entire area was filled with people and beach goers. The wedding wasnt set up at all. No one was even there setting up chairs or anything. We have timed photos to prove this. The beach was supposed to be cleaned up and there was garbage and seaweed all around. There are random people in our pictures now.

The newly wed breakfast (which we have pictures of) was just bread and fruit. There were supposed to be eggs and yogurts and all sorts of stuff but none of it was there.

When this was brought up to Lucas, he was the most unhelpful person in the whole place. The other employees just pretend they dont know what youre saying and pass you off to someone else. This place was absolutely horrible and ridiculous

We did the Dolphin experience. We were told it was a straight shot there 15 minutes and 2 hours with the dolphins and then come back. We had a reservation the day prior but it was canceled so we wanted to make sure that we would be back by 230 to take our covid tests. We were promised no problem at all. It took over a hour and 20 minutes to get there. When we got there, it was 20 minutes with the dophins and then the bus wasnt coming back till 230. So we ended up having to get an Uber and taking that back to the resort.

The covid test is a full on joke. There is no reason they are even testing considering the "nurse" didnt even put the swab in my nose. There was little no touching to it at all for the test. Everyone we were with said the same thing. They are not actually testing anyone.

When were werefinally leaving, they were having "computer problems" for the check out. They had us there for almost an hour. Our car was supposed to be there for us to get in at 8 but didnt show up till 830. Then the bell boy was trying to tell us we werent allowed to leave. This place is a joke. We are running all of our cards for charge backs. These clowns didnt provide anything in our contract on timely manners or anything. they charged us so much for the wedding and basically ruined it all. Go else where.

And for all the drinkers that are excited for all the included booze.... its watered down. No one in the whole party caught a buzz until we started paying for drinks
