“We had a fantastic time!!! Would go back in a heartbeat!!!”
Reviewed 27 February 2012

This was a great resort, not sure what others are complaining about. We travelled with friends from Feb. 13 to Feb. 20. We have been to quite a few resorts in Dominican and Cuba and this is by far one of the better one. It is a small resort which is great for getting where you want to go quickly. Everything is clean and the staff are helpful and friendly.

I will start with our room. We were in 2204 which is directly across from the theatre. It usually quieted down around 11 and we didn't have to worry about getting chairs to watch as we would sit out on our balcony and watch the entertainment. It wasn't great but it was funny. They do the best they can with what they've got. The room had two double beds, which, as others have said were hard and had lumpy pillows but we were tired enough when we went to bed we didn't care. The room was cleaned daily and new towels were replenished every day. In the evening our beach towels would be exchanged as well by the maid which was fabulous as the towel hut never seemed to have clean ones.

The food was great at the buffet and the a la cartes. You can always find something good to eat and the desserts were fantastic especially anything chocolate. The wait staff were friendly and always quick to get you what you wanted.

The beach was great and the water was lovely. The beach vendors were doing their job but a polite thank you and they were on their way. They are only trying to make money to provide for their family. Louis and Nelson, excursion sellers, are great. We didn't book any trips with them but talked with them on a daily basis. The beach bar was great as was the food there. It was a limited menu but the fried chicken was fantastic. Every morning the security guard would bring us our chairs and we tipped him every day. You can reserve your chairs but don't be gone too long. People were reserving them and leaving for hours at a time which meant some people didn't get chairs. The staff, after seeing them empty for a very long time, would give them to others that were just arriving at the beach or laying on the sand; proper thing!!!

The plaza is only about a minute walk from here. They have restaurants, souvenirs, liquor and excursions. There is also an internet cafe called Froogies. Not sure how much the internet was at the resort but we heard it was quite expensive so we bought beer and logged on for a few minutes; you will have to ask the one working for the password. Apparently there is a market on the other side of the beach but we didn't make it down.

We met some great people while we were here, A big hello to Jim and Diane from NS, John and Nancy from NF and Basil and Jasmine from NS. If any of you guys read this email me please.

So all in all we were very happy with this resort and what we paid for it. We would return again with no hesitation and recommend it to our friends. Your vacation is what you make it and if you want to find the bad you no doubt can find the bad with anything or everything. We know what to expect and have a great time.

If anyone reading this has any questions they would like to ask please feel free to contact me. You will get an honest an unbiased opinion!!

Room Tip: If you are looking for quiet then blocks 1 and 2 aren't for you.

I'm not sure what all the bad reviews are about. I went with a group of 11 people ranging in age from 23-75 and everyone had a great time!

Rooms: Yes, the rooms are basic, but cleaned daily. We tipped the maids a couple dollars a day and we always got fresh towels and water, and they even gave us some rose petals or fruit plates. A few couples asked to change rooms to avoid stairs or to get a quieter room. Some of the rooms closer to the stage can be noisy during the shows, but the shows always ended around 10:30 - 11:00pm, nothing crazy or super late. And there were no problems in getting rooms changed. The beds were comfy to me and we had extra pillows in our large closet that we used as well. We didn't pay for a room upgrade or anything, but we had a wonderful room with a private balcony that faced away from the resort. So I suggest if you don't like your room initially for any reason, just tell the front desk and they are very helpful.

Food: The food was great and everyone with our group always had something they liked. They have a carving station, a pasta station, and different kinds of potatoes and rice daily in the buffet. Once in a while we had to wait in line to get into the buffet, but never more than 5-10 minutes. We were able to try all 3 a la carte restaurants without any problems (just book the first or second day you are there) The steakhouse/grill was tasty, but not my favorite. The oriental restaurant was really nice inside and the food was tasty as well. The seafood restaurant was our favorite. The waiters were always right there to refill your drink or take away your plate, or bring you another if you were still hungry! Franklin, the food and beverage manager, does a fantastic job!

Grounds: The grounds were beautiful and they were doing simple upkeep to keep them clean and nice while we were there, like painting the edging or the concrete to keep it looking fresh. The beach was gorgeous also. The vendors didn't bother us as all. If we didn't feel like shopping a polite "no thanks" did the trick and they moved right along. But it was the best shopping experience when we did look! They had really nice larimar and silver jewelry and you didn't even have to leave your beach chair! The vendors were hilarious and amusing even when we weren't shopping and they never bothered us while we were just laying out or taking a nap.

Staff: By far the best part of this resort is the staff. They genuinely just want you to have a great time and will go above and beyond to make sure that you do. We fell in love with all of them! Mayo and Coca-cola are a riot and they all knew us by name by the time we left. There was a birthday in our group while we were there and we let guest services know. She ended up with 2 birthday cakes, both personalized with her name and age.

Excursions: We only did one "official" excursion - the waterfall half-day. This is a MUST! You climb up 7 waterfalls only to slide or jump down them after you reach the top. The guides basically drag you up the waterfalls. Warning though: this is tough! It's a hike and you should be a strong swimmer since you're swimming against the current a lot. For snorkeling we hopped in a cab for $60 total (7 people) and went to Sosua where we paid $20 each for and hour of snorkeling on our own private boat with a guide. Then to tour puerto plata, we hired dominic, one of the cab drivers. He was amazing! If you are staying at the resort, ask for dominic to take you around puerto plata. We went to a school to see some children and meet the teachers, then shopping at little stores, then walked along "long beach" and finished the day off with beers along the shore.

Overall the resort was fantastic. I fell in love with puerto plata and the people and wish I could back right away! For the price, this is one of the best places you can book. It's not too big, there are plenty of bars and always food available somewhere for you to eat. Again, the staff is just phenomenal and I can't say enough good things about them.

At first it seemed a great choice despite being put in an awful room - we paid for upgrade for balcony and overlooked a forest with swamp at the back with the aircon units and toilets to the side but at first we thought we'd stick with it as was quiet and hoping not to spend too much time in the room (block 8 - 8209 ). Had a couple of days of rain and were unable to use balcony as very dark due to trees and mozzies so asked for a room change which we got (room 7209 - brilliant ) though sets of drawers seem to be alien to the whole complex. Anyway first week great and then bars started to get shut down and other bars serving hours dramatically reduced which was very dissappointing. I was on holiday and I don't think its on that I have to troop around a complex to find a drink. Again first week the service at main buffet was very good then it dropped off with times waiting to be seated increasing at some points and waiting for drinks etc with the meals to be served. Had they not started messing around with the drinks areas and sorted out the waiting times I would probably have recommended Blue Bay. However the layout and the grounds are very pretty and staff were very hardworking and mostly friendly (we all have our off days!) - they probably need more help. If you need to escape for a while get to the Plaza and have a few beers at Phil's Bar and the Roadway do a lovely steak amongst other things. We went on excursions and would recommend Paradise Island VIP trip, the Outback tour, whale watching and Ocean World - if you go here you really need to do either the dolphin swim or encounter / stringray shark encounter as I don't think there will be enough there if you just go without doing something.

Room Tip: room 7209 - quiet but still able to see life going by

Have just returned from a 2 week stay (9th - 23rd Feb 2012) at BlueBay and on the whole the trip was ok. We paid for a room upgrade with balcony - our view was the swamp out the back of the hotel (room 8208) there are no drawers in the room - walls are paper thin, we could hear our neighbours stirring cups of coffee next door! Food was good throughout our stay and we always managed to find something to eat, though absolutely hated the constant queuing to be seated in the buffet restaurant, doesn't matter whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner you WILL have to queue at some point to be seated!

Then they started shutting bars and varying what was available! Pool bar (not the swim up bar) was closed during day, the Quiet Bar (open 10am - 11pm ) stopped providing the whole range of drinks and became just a juice and coffee bar - as we preferred the Quiet Bar we had to walk either to the Pool Bar or Beach Bar to get drinks of an evening!! Then we saw a couple of nights before we left that the Beach Bar, supposedly 24 hours was starting to shut at 1am - wild variations to what we wanted and indeed this can no longer be called a 24 HOUR ALL INCLUSIVE resort.

Staff on the whole are very friendly and work really hard with the resources they have available to them, yet there never seems to be sufficient staff. As the holiday progressed there was a definite lack of staff and drop in service level - on several occasions we had eaten before we got water or drinks with the meals!

Plus points - Phil's Bar in the Plaza good beer and reasonably priced. The Roadway, again in the Plaza, excellent food and value for money, well worth pushing the boat out and visiting these places for a change of scenery.

Room Tip: Rooms around the Spa area are definitely quieter

Great value for money.
2 weeks, end of january and feb, 2012
We loved it.
you are going to have a great time !
A true 4 stars.
Quiet in our area (block 8).
May be noisy around the theater !
very nice staff.
Varied and good food.
Wine is disgusting though.
But rhum and other drinks well compensate.
Excellent animation team every night.
Spanish course etc during the day.
Rainy first 3 days.
Beach vendors are insisting and a real problem
but this does not depend upon the hotel.

Room Tip: Not near theater: noisy
