As you watch the majestic iron gates gradually open you know something special lies inside. I agree with all that has been written already. We had two dinners created by Wilhimin, one to celebrate our anniversary. Delicious. Watching the setting sun over the pool is a lovely experience. Much better than a resort. Lot's of flowers, parakeets, peace and quiet. Elegant furnishings. Helene is a gem. Very gracious and helpful with airport and rental car arrangements. Don't miss a chance to stay at Landhuis Jan Thiel.

Room tip: We waited til after 5 to have a blissful solitary swim in the infinity pool

We were inspired to stay in Landhuis Jan Thiel because of its historic significance. The property is great and even if many people are staying, there is a lot of privacy. The grounds are stunning and lovingly maintained. We saw tones of birds and were near great hikes in the salt flats. Many eateries and grocery stores nearby.

The pool was beautiful and clean.

We were greeted and returned to the airport which is such a nice touch. We even had breakfasts foods waiting for us in the fridge.

We ate supper twice in a week onsite and it was healthy and amazing!

Lots of other extras including printed bus schedules, and a birthday card and wine and flowers.

Thanks to Willy, Fabien, Claudia, and Nat (spelling?).

Centrally located, near to Willemstad and all the bays on thát side of the city, and 5 minutes from the Jan Thiel beach, you find Country House Jan Thiel. As you enter, you straightaway feel an atmosphere altogether different from what you’d live at the Jan Thiel beach. There is peace and quiet, the walls of the landhuis are painted in this beautiful and inviting ochre colour used by the plantation owners throughout the island, and the views are gorgeous. Overlooking the former salt pans, with easy access to the area around them for a nice walk, you could spend all your time at this beautifully restored 18th century estate.

We practically did … there is a beautiful pool with comfy beach chairs, and there are so many nice places to sit with a book, have a chat or just dream with a cool glass of white wine in your hands … For dinner you go out to one of the many restaurants on the island, or you pick up some sushi (which you actually can get delivered as well). Or you ask to have dinner prepared for you in the evening.

The estate can be booked exclusively, which gives you 20 beds, divided over 2 cottages with 4 beds each, a coach house with an enormous double bedroom with 2 adjacent extra double rooms, and the Landhuis proper with 3 bedrooms. Or you can check whether you can book a room or one of the cottages, or the coach house, for yourself. We were lucky and had the whole estate for ourselves, and used the coach house as our apartment. It is tastefully decorated, with a nice big kitchen, sitting area (with tv from around the world), an enormous master bedroom with a library on the mezzanine and decks with tables, sofas and chairs all around. It’s just great to get up when you want to (often woken up by the parrots in the trees around), make your own coffee first, sit out on your terrace or deck and contemplate the choices ahead. Stay at the estate with a good book, play some tennis, try your luck on the putting green, or take the dogs on the estate for a walk in the salt pans. Or go to the beach for a change (we went to a great place north of Willemstad and had a great lunch followed by some nice beach time - the place is called Karakter www.karaktercuracao.com.

Landhuis Jan Thiel is a dream for families celebrating big birthdays, or for intimate weddings. And with the owners you can tailor your holiday any way you want: you want dinner in the evening, on the terrace adjacent to the Landhuis, overlooking the whole area? You want breakfast in the morning, or just coffee?

Thoughtful gesture: you’re always picked up from the airport, and the people of the car rental company will come to the estate with your rental car. Your rooms are of course serviced daily and have properly functioning airco.

Highly recommended!

Room tip: Spoil yourself and get the Coach House - an enormous bedroom with terraces and decks on two sides as well as a mezzanine all around lined with books. The decoration of all the rooms though is lovely: plantation style, nice white linen, some nice old furniture and some nice new art. All done with great love and style.

Foreword: Landhuis Jan Thiel is a rare Dutch Colonial House that has been reinstated to its former glory and architectural splendour by its current owners. This listed former plantation estate located on a hilltop with magical views, with all its landscapes, individual buildings and quarters has an elegance, a feeling of History and an air of grandness to savour.

Having just stayed for 19 days at Landhuis Jan Thiel I would like to thank Boris and Lieve and their excellent caring staff for a unique experience. The service provided sets the bar for their profession. This was something special.

Their service begins the moment you plan to stay at Landhuis Jan Thiel (LJT). Email communication to help with any requirements prior to arriving in Curacao. Personally we had a car rental ready to be picked up at LJT - since Boris personally picked us up from the airport - and requested our fridge be stocked up on arrival with some essentials.

On the grounds we met Sixleen and Myra, two kind and warm hearted Curacao ladies who look after every accommodation requirement you may have, always with a smile. They maintain the accommodation and communal areas in pristine condition. They service the rooms daily and at times that suit. Clean beach towels were provided every day if needed and a full laundry service was available on request. A special touch concocted by Sixleen and the LJT team during our stay was choosing an evening for Sixleen to cook for us a typical creole meal.

The master bedroom in the Coach House is stunning. Their are several WiFi connections located around LJT and cable tv , which you probably will not even need! The ambience is serene with only the melodic sounds of the local birds.

The whole estate is overseen by Boris and Lieve. Their attention to detail is second to none. They pretty much know what you need before you do. They are on call for your every need and as trained professionals their culinary skills are at the very top. If required they can cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Boris is a professional chef of the highest calibre.

If you need any pointers on things to do on the island Boris and Lieve can help you plan discovering Curacaos' treasures. Another tip to any visitor - if you like an adventurous walk ask Boris to show you the nature trail in the salt pans behind the plantation.

Staying at Landhuis Jan Thiel was a holiday in itself. I am certain that anyone wanting to get away from the routines of work and city life could visit Landhuis Jan Thiel - not travel outside its premises - and have a relaxing rejuvenating vacation.

For us personally it proved to be the perfect focal point to explore the island. Hopefully we will not have to wait too long to return to both Curacao and Landhuis Jan Thiel.

Room tip: Coach house master bedroom is stunning
