Attraction details
Owner description: What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

Had a pleasant time walking around this square, and in the right hand corner of the square we sat outside and drank some lovely beer. It's also available on tap at the tables!

The square was surrounded by typically Cuban buildings, in their gorgeous pastel colours. Worth a visit.

The Plaza Vieja ... while not the oldest plaza in the city is full of life and color. A great place to people watch and enjoy the city.

Much of the life in Havana is social and revolves around the gathering of the people. What better place than the old square. Restaurants and architecture provide a picturesque location where dancing can be seen and experienced.
