“The good, the bad and the ugly”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 March 2012

The good: The food was plentiful and pretty good. Breakfast included sausages, hash, boiled eggs, a version of home fries, scrambled eggs, toast, fresh fruit and lots more. They also would cook you an omlette with various fillings as well as pancakes and fried eggs. It was, for the most part, the same each day. Lunch had numerous dishes (plus salad) to choose from and varied more day to day. I only ate dinner there a couple of nights as I wanted to try other places for variety. The last night they served free rum punch & appetizers (conch fritters and couple of other items which were really good).

It's a pretty set-up with lots of lounge chairs at the pool and on the hill overlooking the ocean. Short walk to town where there are shops, small restaurants and a grocery store. Rooms have hair dryers, irons, wall safe, phone, alarm clock, tv, fridge, a/c. On site casino, lawn games. Short jaunt to airport.

Dive boats are well organized, dive lockers available right on the dock (bring a lock). Dive shop on site with various items for sale. You can dive right off the pier - awesome night diving right there! Snorkeling is also very, very good as there are lots of colorful fish, octopus in the rocks under the pier. You can dive Nitrox if you're certified. Bonaire is the place to go for fantastic short diving - the reef is right there!!!!!

The bad: I always expect a slower pace when travelling south of the border, but..... Although checkin is not until 3:00, my room was not ready until 4:00 PM. Most of the time there was only one staffperson on the service desk with a backup of people waiting for assistance. The safe didn't work and after several requests over several days I was finally able to get them to come to fix it (they installed new batteries which was a common problem). With 129 rooms, they need more staff on desk. If you go to pasta night, expect to wait a loonngggg time in line as they don't have a good system for that type of cooking for that many people.
The a/c could not be shut off so the room was freezing. By that time, I didn't want to try and deal with any more problems so I huddled under the covers at night.
...and then there was the main swimming pool. Yes, they "cleaned" it each day, but it was green and needed to be shocked. I wouldn't swim in it. There was a smaller pool in another spot which wasn't as bad.

The ugly:
OMG - there were two women screaming for help because they accidently locked themselves on the balcony at dusk. Luckily, or so they thought, they had a cell phone and called the front desk. TWO HOURS and many, man bug bites later, help had not arrived. Another guest had to go to the front desk to insist they send someone right away (he said he was busy and was the only one on the desk to handle everything). I won't go into all the details but it was INEXCLUSABLE not to respond to their phone call promptly.

All in all, it's an OK place to stay & great place to dive. But, if you need help with something, you'd better be insistant on your first request or you'll end up waiting a long time for assistance in whatever is the issue.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe room right on the ocean. Sit on the balcony and listen to the waves just steps away...

As this was my first time staying at a Divi resort, I wasn't sure what to expect but given Divi's reputation in general I have to say I was somewhat disappointed by this particular resort. From the beginning the operation seemed to be poorly organized, and although we were a large group (50+) the resort certainly had plenty of time to prepare for our arrival (we had booked several months earlier). Upon our arrival at the resort, it was apparent they were indeed unprepared. There was one man checking everyone in; some people got rooms right away and others (like myself) waited upwards of 81/2 hours for our rooms! Our room, once assigned, was very nice: 2nd floor, cathedral ceiling, nice balcony on the water, and clean. No problems with the water, the A/C always worked, the TV worked as did the coffee maker and the small fridge. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about staying at this resort in general is that it seemed like the right hand never knew what the left hand was doing. Getting towels to take on the dive boats was a daily ordeal. The front desk tells you to get the towels at the beach bar, but the beach bar is closed. Or better yet the towels will be ready at 830 am, the dive boats leave at 815am. On one occasion, I took an empty box of tissue to the desk to ask for another, after the girl made three phone calls ???? I was presented with a handful of dinner napkins. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive, as were the staff in the dive shop. The diving was unremarkable, the sites look very much the same. Not a lot of big fish, but plenty of little ones. We did see a rather large seahorse, several turtles, very large green morays, and many lionfish. Our dive masters were experienced, professional, and relaxed. Shore diving was a challenge mainly due to the fact that the island is made from coral, access points are across coral laden "beaches" or down rocky hills; and having only brought fin liners instead of dive boots walking was a problem in full gear. To sum it all up, it was really nice to get away for a well needed vacation and do some warm water diving.

We'd like to thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay at Divi Flamingo and we wanted to address your concerns. Being on an island we have challenges with keeping supplies in hand, beach towels are ordered and arriving next week.

As for the United Air red-eye arrival; this has become a challenge unless the guest(s) pays for the evening before as a guarantee so that the room is ready. This is the standard hotel procedure for an early morning arrival at 5.30am.

Policy is whenever rooms were/are ready we always check the guests in. However, a high occupancy in the resort or during high season does not always allow us to give rooms at 5.30am simply because we do not have them available to give out. HK staff are scheduled at 5am for the early departure, and we room assign turnaround rooms from departure to the early arrivals. However, based on room category and flights this is not always possible. Delta or Insel air guests will not check out of the rooms until noon, giving HK cleaning time till 2pm to meet the 2pm check in.

Again, we're sorry for any inconvenience & we thank you for you taking the time to let us know a little more about your Flamingo stay. We hope you'll stay with us again!

This was my first diving experience. Since I'm french you might find some weird expressions, my apologies. We were a group of 9 divers.
Transportation from and to the airport had been taking care of by the resort . We arrived early morning from Newark and we had to slowdown our north American pace to the much slower pace of the Island ! (that was quite a challenge)... I was disappointed not to have a welcome drink at arrival !
It took a while to be checked in and rooms were not available before 3 pm. We had to stuff our luggage in a small room next to the lobby and head to the lounge chairs on the peer for a quick nap.
As expected, we got the rooms around 3 pm. It was like entering in a cold room, the thermostat was set for 18 degrees and the air conditioner was dripping on the floor. Being an air conditioner technician I quickly inspected the system to discover that it's been leaking for a loooong time so I didn't bother reporting it and just raised the thermostat setting to be comfortable. Room was very clean and beds were comfortable, we had a room looking at the ocean and a nice small patio. There was a small fridge and a coffee maker. Since we had 5 dives plan per day, we didn't have much time to spend in the room or anywhere else other than the water !
The resort was very quiet and kept in a very good condition.
The dive-shop was very convenient; lockers right next to the dive boat, very effective dive-shop manager and excellent dive masters, boats in good condition and great captains. Boats were leaving on time and air tank were aboard for everyone (many small leaks on tanks but it looks like this is normal... after-all, if my experienced buddy divers were not concern about it why should I ???)
I feel very lucky to have had the chance to obtain my basic and advanced certification in this paradise.
We had breakfast every morning in the buffet area next to the water, open restaurant with a good breeze, it was never too hot.
The only drawback is that smoking was permitted in the restaurant.
For lunch, the first day we picked up some groceries and ate every noon in our rooms as we were in a hurry to go back on the boat for the afternoon dive.
Supper was usually at the Chibi-Chibi restaurant on the resort. Everything we ordered was good and reasonably priced. Personnel was always helpful and smiley.. just remember that they have their own pace (be happy, don't hurry !) The last day I had a chance to explore the surroundings of the resort to discover a good cappuccino and ice-cream shop with free internet (Lilly's) at a walking distance. If you venture just a couple streets away from the main shopping area, you'll find much lower prices for the same items.
Altogether, this was a superb vacation, we were gone 8 days and I had the impression to have been gone a month !
We packed every moment with good souvenirs. A place to remember and to return to.

Room Tip: Room with view in the ocean, check that the air conditioner is not dripping on the floor.

I spent a week at Divi Flamingo with a group of 35 divers from across the US and Canada. First, the highlight of the trip was the Dive Op. I have dove around the world and expereinced the best and worst of the dive business. The Divi Dive op is one of the best that I have encountered. It runs like a well oiled machine. Boats leave on time; there is no rush on dive times and DMs are willing to assist in any way they can. Serge manages to keep everything moving smartly always with a smile. Equipment problems were tackled in a prompt and efficient manner. The dive op gets five stars, so you can see what the resport gets.

This was my second trip to Divi in the past three years. In that time, not much has changed at the resort. The rooms are OK; nothing special. The meals are marginal at best. We got the same stuff most morning for breakfast. Due to the size of our group, we had lunches served buffet style, which isn't an issue if the food is good. But the food wasn't. The fish tended to be overcooked. There was a lot of butter (or grease) in the serving pans. We ate two dinners at Divi and the dinners were slightly better, but still not up to par.

The food service staff did a good job of getting stuff, e.g. coffee, water, etc. to us, but they didn't have much else to do anyway since everything was buffet.

We arrived on one of the early AM flights from Newark. They promised our rooms at 2 pm which is about what we expected. Didin't happen. Finally about 3:30 pm. our rooms started to get assigned and by about 5 pm, everyone was in as I recall. In their defense, the resort was entirely full and they had to turn over most of the rooms. Still the front desk wasn't very customer service oriented.

So I'd use the dive op and avoid the resort.

The ratings are for the resort, excluding the dive op.

I just came back from the Diva Flamingo Resort in Bonaire, I took 18 people from our Dive store there on a dive package including lodging, food, and diving. The overall experince was good, the Dive opperation did a great job, the rooms were clean and very nice, the food was good although slow at times but some of that is the culture and after talking with the manangement our service was great. Over all for the price this was a great place.
