Shades Holiday Apartments
Reviewed 21 January 2013

My husband and I were fortunate to find this lovely guesthouse. Jacqui, the manager, arranged for us to be picked up at the airport and she was there at "the shades" to greet us upon our arrival. She gave us a tour of the beautiful grounds and apartment 5, a one-bedroom, ground floor apartment. Everything was there for self-catering, including our groceries, which we had ordered online and had been put away for us. The shower was a luxury, a lovely patio, surrounded by well maintained tropical gardens, just as you see in the photos on their website. There is a very clean swimming pool and outdoor patio area with a barbecue, laundry facilities for use during certain hours and a small gym. The apartments are situated in such a way as to give ample privacy to each patio, equipped with table and chairs. Jacqui was very helpful and always available to make arrangements for us such as: taxis, introducing us to Jerry and Marvellous, who set up loungers and an umbrella in a prime spot on the beach each day, and answering our questions.

The location is great. It's a little ways up a hill off the main beach road in a quiet residential neighbourhood. the walk to the beach, was approx. 5 to 10 minutes. It's a pleasant walk down the hill; however, the main beach road doesn't have consistent sidewalks and some deep ditches, so as you would anywhere else, be cautious and watch where you're going, especially if you're not used to left side driving. Payne's Bay Beach and the sea are glorious. You can swim out (if you're a good swimmer) to where you see the excursion boats and snorkel to see the turtles. Friday was the busiest day with passengers from the cruise ships arriving, but it was fun to people watch, and we always had our loungers waiting for us. It never felt crowded. My husband did paddle boarding every day. I had a fantastic foot massage by Charlie (Happy Feet) and i bought 3 pieces of jewellery from a beach vendor. One day we had a fantastic meal on the beach, arranged by the jetski guy...lol. We waited almost an hour after paying, but a young man finally arrived with take out food, not even sure where it came from, but the fish and rice were delicious. We walked both ways on the beach ~ a lovely walk to Sandy Lane Beach.

We ate out at 3 restaurants: Daphne's, (walking distance), The Fish Pot, and Pisces, the latter 2 we took a taxi. They were all wonderful, but expensive for every night dining out. Daphne's made the best mojito. Thanks to another member who mentioned on "the shades" review, about a streetside grill, called "Connie's" ~ I remember reading about it and on our way back from Pisces, on our 2nd last night, we saw it. It only operates on Thurs., Fri., and Sat. nights, a very short walk from the apartment and the food, which was takeaway, was super delicious and very inexpensive, in fact, the portions we were told were so big, that we shared an order. We had this on our last night, dining on the patio. We wish we had been aware of it for the Thurs. night as well, could have saved some money and as i said, the food is delicious.

On our last day, we checked out at 10 a.m. and since our flight wasn't until later that afternoon, we hired our regular taxi driver (recommended by Jacqui) to take us on a tour of the east coast. The views were stunning. We had lunch at a restaurant called "the round house" (i think) which overlooked the Atlantic Ocean and we could see "the soup bowl" which is a famous surfing spot. Our driver was great, very knowledgeable about the island. We would have loved to stay longer. The Shades was the perfect place for us. Thank you Jacqui and your staff for a wonderful vacation. We will return.

I booked Shades apartments for its location and the five star reviews. It turned out to be well worth it. It started with the lovely Jacqui (the best bit of Shades) answering all my silly emails and enquiries. When we first arrived it was a bit worrying as we turned off the main road and up into to a very local area, which actually had very nice people in it, but when we went through the gates we found the lovely gardens and a great swimming pool. The apartments have all you need and are quiet especially if you are in a one bedroom apartment as they are a little bit away from the others. The owner is a lovely man and If you want anything at all Jacqui is on to it instantly including booking you the best table at The Cliff restaurant!

Room Tip: One bedroomed are a little quieter.

I stayed at Shades of Barbados from 17-24th November with 2 friends. The minute we got there we felt so welcome. Jackie and Errol are one hell of a top team. Their knowledge of the island, attentiveness, keenness to help us make the holiday the best it could be and friendliness is thre best I have see.

They really do have a unique service style that is hard to beat. And with only being a couple of minutes from the stunning (!!!!) beach and 10 minutes on bus from the busy Holetown.. it really was the ldeal place to stay.

Don't do the over-priced hotels along Paynes Bay - go to Shades!

This was a real find thanks to the wonders of the internet and TripAdvisor!! We wanted good quality not necessarily luxurious self catering accommodation for a family holiday in Barbados and Shades does not disappoint. It thoroughly exceeded all our expectations in every way. We booked apartment 7 the two bedroom penthouse villa and it was totally perfect for us and two teenage children. Plenty of space, excellent bathrooms with large walk in showers, high quality fixtures and fittings throughout and flat screen plasma tv with hundreds or channels, not that it was ever used very much! The bedrooms are airconditioned with good quiet fan units, a real plus is the free wifi, great to look for and book local restaurants on your smartphone or iPad etc.
There is a lovely small pool and gardens and the staff are fantastic. Jacqui our host looked after our every need and booked a car, catamaran trip for us and even stocked us with a few groceries for our arrival tea, milk etc. Nothing was too much trouble and we will definitely return.
The fabulous Paynes Bay beach is only 5 minutes walk away and Holetown is only 5 minutes drive where there is a good supermarket (even selling Essential Waitrose products!) and lots of good restaurants catering for all budgets.
Shades is excellent value for money and perfect for a family holiday, thoroughly recommended, we wouldn't want to stay anywhere else!

Room Tip: Apartment 7, perfect for family of four with two bedrooms and bathrooms.

Location of this place could not be better, it is off in the middle of a neighborhood within minutes of walking distance to some of the best restaurants and incredible calm beaches. We stayed in Apartment 6 and it was extremely clean and included everything needed. Awesome bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable and the whole apartment made us feel right at home. Jacqui was extremely nice and very helpful in finding good deals around the island as well as activities to do. The pool and the workout room as well as the little covered tent make it really nice to relax outside by the pool. They even have a sound system to hook up your Ipod, computer or whatever music player you have. Once again cannot go wrong with this place with such an awesome host like Jaqcui. Definitely will stay here again.

Room Tip: All are good rooms.
