My husband and I stayed at the Tropicana for two weeks. I had difficulty with the web site, so I emailed the resort. Arelis provided outstanding assistance and completed our reservation. I made an error in the dates, but Albert at the desk saved the day! He was able to accommodate us for three extra days at the same rate even though they were extremely busy. And he did it all with a smile and good humor. The bellmen were equally helpful and friendly. Pablo Hoyos M. (bell captain)and Kyle went out of their way to help us with luggage and arrangements. I was recuperating from recent surgery and was unable to lift anything. They carefully assisted each time. Goberto and Angela secured reservations and answered our many questions with great cheer.
The resort itself has undergone improvements, and most rooms are newly painted and furnished. We were fortunate to get a convenient first floor unit. (Thank you, Albert!) The resort is a short walk to the market, and we took a taxi back ($9) as we got provisions for two weeks. The bus stop is close by making a trip downtown simple. Price of one way bus is now $2.60 per person.
My only complaint is that many people stake out chairs under the palapas at the pool and beach at 7:30 in the morning, but don’t actually sit there until 10 or 11 a.m.—and sometimes even later. There is a “rule” that you are to leave the seat for no more than 1.5 hours. Unfortunately, no where on the island is this rule enforced!! One day we rented an umbrella from a kiosk just so we could sit close to the water...but that doesn’t seem fair, and the additional cost ($20 a day) is prohibitive. Security at every resort and every beach needs to enforce the rules.
Nonetheless, it was a wonderful experience thanks to the employees who were so helpful. We celebrated my husband’s birthday there, and we plan to return again next year!
