1 night at Janalli Gardens

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 7 May 2015
We spent a night here in March and wished we had time to stay longer. From the first greeting (dogs included) to the last goodbye we throughly enjoyed our stay. Our room at the end of the verandah was fabulous, comfortable, warm and stylish. The ensuite is lovely with a great shower. The gardens are gorgeous, lots of birds and wildlife and so quiet. Breakfast unfortunately could not be provided (we knew this in advance) so we had tea on the verandah before leaving. Cannot say enough good things about our stay here, we will be back again to stay longer next time. Neerim and Janalli Gardens are about a 90 minute drive from Melbourne, a great spot for a mini break.

We booked for only one night but it should have been more.
wow! What a peaceful setting this was, one day was not enough to absorb the magic of these extensive, amazing Gardens, every pocket had a different feel.
Many of the plants were producing food that made the meals fresh an flavoursome. The hosts made us feel very relaxed and welcome by going the extra mile catering for us.
We had dinner just up the road at the Kings Arms Hotel, (Lamb Shanks & Veg Risotto), they were very generous servings and extremely tasty.
We would definitely recommend spending time at this wonderland retreat and want to come back in the Autumn.

Glorious gardens and a very comfortable and private room. The room with en-suite we had was at the end of the sweeping verandah and easy access to the spa built in to the deck. Lovely to relax in the spa overlooking the gardens and glimpsing the lake through the trees. Very nice communal living and dining area (we were the only guests at the time). A new Thai restaurant had just opened in Neerim South which was reasonable. Great meal at Big Spoon Little Spoon in Warrigal-you need to book this popular local produce restaurant.
No mobile phone access until back up the road in the town added to the peace and quiet.
New owners have just taken over and they were still working some things out, like the TV set-up in the lounge room. They have sorted out breakfast though, and it was excellent. Freshly squeezed orange juice from their own oranges grown on the property and fresh eggs form chooks on the property are highlights.
As well as absolutely magnificent gardens the bird-life is fantastic. Bird-calls go on all day and add to the tranquility.
Thoroughly recommended for a restoring get away reasonably close to Melbourne.

Room tip: Outside verandah rooms probably best in good weather. Otherwise there is at least one internal room.

Summary:

Janalli Gardens as a 'couples getaway' is superb. It offers separate accommodation as well as a common living area should you feel like mixing with the other guests. It's located down the valley from Neerim itself, but this isolation is part of the charm, along with its superb gardens. Should you have the opportunity to stay, I would thoroughly recommend it. One noticeable downside to Janalli is the lack of mobile phone reception (even Telstra), but some would say this is a good thing. Having said that, our gracious hosts Phillipa & Alan (upon request) allowed us to use their WiFi which was very kind of them.

The Property:

The property itself is magnificent with long sweeping verandahs with plenty of places to just sit & be.

The Location:

Location wise, as I mentioned it's a little of the way of the main township, but this only enhances its appeal in terms of solitude. As mentioned don't rely on mobile reception 100% of the time. This may well be worth considering if you need to be on call or available.

The Accommodation:

Our room was well appointed and reasonable in size (but not huge) with it's own ensuite bathroom. There was also a spa down the end of the house which presumably was for the use of all guests?

The Restaurants:

The property itself doesn't offer an evening meal to the best of my knowledge, which left only the township which I'm sorry to say is slim pickings. The only restaurant on offer at the time of our stay was the King Arms Hotel (which to be polite) was adequate enough to keep the wolves from the door.

Room tip: You can sometimes find deals for Janalli Gardens online at Groupon, Scoopon, Living Social etc.

Thank you so much for this very positive and comprehensive review and for the time it took to complete it. I'm delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. The photos are great. I find it very interesting to see the different angles from which people shoot familiar corners of the garden. You are obviously a very creative photographer. We do serve dinner for our guests by prior arrangement. There are some good restaurants around within a 20 minute drive ranging from Thai to Italian to tapas to ones specialising in local produce. Next time you come we can if you like direct you to some of them. Anyone interested in setting up a good restaurant in Neerim South would be assured of the warm welcome by the locals and visitors alike!

I arrived frazzled and left calm and content. Your ears quickly become attuned to the birdsongs and morning chorus. Your eyes are rewarded by the gardens and breakie. Your nose is taken with the roses and the morning's repast. The rooms are sumptuous and tasteful. The grounds are a credit to Phillipa and Allan whose vision and hard work are evident everywhere.
Thanks for the chats and the chance to share in your wonderful property.

Room tip: Book early as I presume that this would be a popular choice. The oriental room is next to a spa.
