A beautiful scenic drive. The only way to truly appreciate the landscape is to get out of the car and explore on the various trails.

If simply taking a scenic drive, I would strongly recommend stopping at Diablo Lake Overlook, Ross Lake Overlook (3.5 miles east) and Washington Pass Overlook (a further 28 miles east). Perhaps stopping for a picnic by the water's edge at Thunder Knob Trailhead (situated at the southern spur of Diablo Lake). There are basic facilities and free parking areas along the route.

Be aware that a lot of the drive is tree-lined and may make the drive a little monotonous at times. Also factor in the heavy traffic around the greater Seattle area if journeying from afar.

For some reason North Cascades is one of the least visited national parks of the lower 48, which is a shame (although I didn't mind the lack of crowds when I was there!). Highway 20 runs right through the park and makes it easy to take in all the scenic views. Gorgeous lakes and mountains are abundant in this park. Take your time and enjoy the ride!

And the visitors centre is pretty good too. I got terrific advice from the Ranger on where to stop and walk to get the best views on my drive though. Turquoise glacier fed lakes, fast moving rivers, soaring multi coloured spires, truly an amazing place!

This National Park is spread out over a large area and this road laws you to take it in. E did our visit as a day trip from Seattle so we is not go all t way around we went to Diablo lake and turned around. Great vistas along the way.

Take Hwy 20 all the way from Port Townsend to the Idaho border, about 300 miles of spender with the highlight at North Cascades National Park. You cannot go wrong here for views, but like any other NP in August it will be crowded... And camping at a campground is hard to find... The boat ride on Lake Diablo was nice as well.
