Mouse in the room

Review of Kachina Lodge
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 Apr 2024
All was good until a mouse scrambled across my bed in the middle of the night.

The Kachina Lodge sits inbetween the El Tovar and Thunderbird so the location is perfect. You needto check in at El Tovar. We stayed one night before we headed down to Phantom Ranch for Two nights thinking we would head down Bright Angel until the trail was closed for the spring.

Room was two queens and looked to be clean upon arrival. Lighting was dark and the bathroom was good size for the canyon hotels. There was a fridge and you are literally on the canyon rim.

This would have been a 4 star minus the mouse

You are paying for convenience of being right at the rim, but was certainly adequate accommodations. I was glad we didn't pay extra for the canyon view for our 2 night stay, not sure how many of the rooms would have had a spectacular view with trees and angle of where the main canyon is. Was just as easy to walk outside and take in the view and wander a bit. We were short a bath towel (provide 3, and had family of 4) and we needed more regular coffee, a call to the front desk and we were quickly supplied. Beds were comfortable. Parking was at a premium, ended up dropping off family and luggage at the loading dock and then found a parking spot on the road a short distance away. Check the refrigerator temperature, we had a few things freeze, but glad to have an option to keep our picnic and snack supplies chilled.

Room tip: Be prepared to have one person drop off rest of group and find a parking spot that may or may not be nearby.

Picked Kachina because it was supposed to be a more modern park option. It may be decades ahead of Tovar, but it’s also decades behind today.

Room was clean and large, but poorly lit. Bed comfortable. Nice chairs. Wood closet very outdated and worn. Bathroom was small with a shower faucet that didn’t work properly and toilet seat that wouldn’t stay up. Room and hallway smelled musty. Or smelled like cats. Not sure. Weird.

Inconvenient to check-in at Tovar as there is no direct route between the two.

Internet worked well in this building, though.

Being on the rim was nice, but i would not stay here again. I’d opt for lodging outside the park and dive in.

We stayed here this past weekend & had a lovely experience! We were in a first floor partial room on the very end closest to thunderbird lodge. We had a great view of the canyon. Rooms were very quiet. Halls were quiet. Bed was comfortable. Everything was super clean & tidy. Loved having a hydration station in the lodge! Smooth check in/check out. Day of I messaged the hotel when I noticed they had a King room & they accommodated me moving from 2 queens to the King quickly!
Parking I could see being an issue in busier months but we found a spot. Highly recommend the El Tovar restaurant, it was the best food on our trip. Make a reservation! We waited an hour but it was worth it! Absolutely lovely stay!

Room tip: Make a reservation at the restaurant

So this is my review of the Kachina Lodge in Grand Canyon National Park. So I stayed at the hotel with my mom dad and brother. We had a very beautiful view of Grand Canyon in the evening and when the sun was rising this morning. The French fries at Fred Harvey's Restaurant were delicious. The room was very nice. The only problems were that the in the shower, cold was hot and hot was cold which was weird. There also were not enough electrical outlets for my electronics. Also whoever stayed in our room before us set the alarm clock and it went off at 5:00 and 5:30 this morning which woke all four of us up but other than that it was great.

We had a very nice stay and enjoyed the location. It was hard to park closer to the lodge doors to unload luggage, but other then that a nice stay for our family. I’d recommend that hotel to my extended family and friends. We loved waking up and walking out to see the Grand Canyon

Room tip: Wear good walking shoes to unload your luggage
