Phantom Ranch is paradise

Review of Phantom Ranch
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 12 Apr 2024
We love the Canyon and come every year. This was our first time to stay at Phantom in a cabin. Running water, a toilet and electricity??? Sheer luxury - for those who usually stay at Bright Angel camp and remember bucket flush. The cabins are basic but feel like so much more, considering where they are. The hiker's stew itself is worth making the hike and the staff love the place and it shows. It is hard to leave here with anything less than a big smile and great memories. This is my favorite place in the world.

Trip cancelled less than 30 days before scheduled mule ride. Fortunately we recovered most air fare, rental car, and hotel rooms we had reserved for a week long trip. Reservation was made 13 months prior. Best Western is only hotel refusing to refund. Before this attempt, my lottery entry was cancelled after being entered for 6 months.
Good luck.

Room tip: Never got there. Good luck.

LOVED our stay at the Phantom Ranch, and cannot say enough good things about it. We stayed there as part of an REI-guided trip (highly recommend) in early February 2024, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. Weather was perfect for hiking, though parts of the trail were muddy, and we did run into some snow close to the rim on our hike out. The surroundings are magnificent, of course, and when it wasn't cloudy, the night sky was gorgeous as well.

We stayed in a 10-person cabin (#8), which was rustic and spotlessly clean. There were two rooms with a door between: one room with 2 bunkbeds, the other with 3. We were pretty close to the shower house, which on our incoming day ran out of hot water once, but it replenished fairly quickly. We were there two nights, and I had two wonderfully hot showers. The Teva sandals I brought to wear in camp served me well there.

There is a cold-water sink and toilet in the cabin, [TMI incoming] but we had a rule of "No #2 in the loo," which made sense for our group. The other toilet option at the Ranch is a pit toilet on the north side of the property (see accompanying maps), also kept very clean. It is perhaps one of the nicest pit toilets I've ever used.

Loved it. Phantom Ranch is rustic, we had a great stay. Staff is exceptionally friendly. Food is tasty and family style seating with other hikers is fun. We stayed in a cabin for four. Cabin was clean. Common area showers are clean. In the evenings the canteen re-opens for a beer hall, which was a great time with all the other hikers. Would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: If you can get a spot here, make the trip. One of the best vacations ever;

I did the same hike in 1997.
Although 68 and 71 we are both very fit (hiking and cycling), but the descent down the S. Kaibab trail, lurching in and out of the deep steps, was tough on old joints! To our 4.5 hours of walking we added 1.5 hours of resting. Anticipating the record (for late September) 91F, we carried plenty of water/gatorade.
The arrival at Phantom Ranch was a bit of a let down compared to 26 years ago. No longer allowed to rest in the air conditioned canteen during the day, I stood in line in the hot sun for 20 minutes to buy cold beer and soda, and then drank it, in the 90F sun, because there is very little shade.
Wouldn't cost much to put a couple of umbrellas over the tables, would it?
The campsite along the creek was great, although you'll struggle to get your tent pegs in.
Breakfast was filling, I'd compare it to Denny's in quality.
I wouldn't bother with the sack lunch. Not withstanding the cost of getting it there, it was pretty meagre fare for $25. I would suggest eating day old sandwiches you carried down.
The staff at the ranch were great!
The next day, we had a pleasant short hike along the Bright Angel Trail to HavaSupai Gardens, a surprisingly large shady campsite, even with a little library.
The 3rd day we climbed the remaining 4.5 mile, 3000' back out, which we managed at a faster pace than we came down the S. Kaibab! Although crowded, especially after the first water station (1.5 miles) this is a fantastic walk!

Phantom Ranch is an amazing experience if you are lucky enough to be able to book it! We stayed in a cabin- 2 sets of bunk beds ( although there were 2 of us); cement floor, sink in the room and a tiny toilet alcove with a door. 2 chairs and 2 tables/nightstands. Also an ammo can for you place any food/snacks you've brought with you so the squirrels don't get into them. There is an outlet for charging your phone.

Room was spotless, and we didn't experience any "wild life".

Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. We had the 5pm steak dinner- and it came with steak, baked potato, salad, cooked carrots, cornbread. Breakfast includes eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, fruit salad. Also had the lemonade - pro-tip - keep your glass- refills are $1. BTW- we ate family style IN the canteen - but the canteen inside-seating area was only open during meals (for guests having that meal) as well as during a "beer hall" in the evening from 8pm - 9:30pm (I think - there was no way I was going to be able to stay up that late). The side window at the canteen is open from 8am-on I believe - and you can purchase beverages, snacks, and merch there. There are picnic tables outside the canteen where you can sit.
