“AMAZING!!!”
Review of Lower Cave Tour

Lower Cave Tour
Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

Because the elevator wasn’t working, we descended and ascended over 75 stories, and it was SO worth it! If we would have had the choice, we would have walked down the cavern (although, hard in the knees) and have taken the elevator back up (walking up was good for the heart though). If you do find yourself walking both ways, take your time, no one is counting your time unless like us you are with your teenage kids. Every step was worth seeing each room and all the limestone formations. Also, it is good to know that there is a restroom at the bottom of the cave. Kids under 15 were free, but unless there is an elevator or you want to hold your little ones, I would suggest waiting until they are able to walk it in there own.

This was a wonderful caving experience! You literally get to go into one of the dark holes that you see along the Big Room path! Going down the rope was easy and I had been so nervous about that part! The ranger gave great instructions on how to use the rope and I did this for the first time in my life on the first try going down and back up. The ladders, which I was not worried about, were the real boogers! They are steep and slick and hard to get started on, but I survived! Just go slow and make sure you always have at least "3 points of contact"! The cave is awesome and worth the fear of getting down to it!

This is a wonderful small group tour led by two rangers where you get to see a part of the cave system up close and personal. You are supplied helmets and gloves and are guided along a great path that has some slightly difficult sections but nothing that requires crawling or getting really dirty. Our group of 8 was able to go into a less visited section because 4 people didn't show up. Max group size is 12.

The rangers do a great job of sharing stories of the caves as well as the explorers and scientists that continue to enhance our knowledge. They are totally devoted to preserving the beauty for future generations.

Take 3 AA batteries with you, and you will be totally awed by the experience.

When my wife and I (in our 70s) approached the rope access down the first part of this cave tour my wife almost backed our. She stuck with it, going (rappelling?) down about 12 ft. and then the set of three steel ladders into the main cave to begin the walk. She was very glad she was there.

After the beginning difficult access the walk is relatively easy. The hard hats and gloves we were issued for the tour were really necessary, but the walk was not strenuous.

Each person on this tour needs to have three AA batteries for the helmet light, and no backpacks are allowed. I left my camera behind, which was a good move, as the bulk would not have been easy to contend with. My phone photos were just fine.

This tour begins in the visitor's center rather than down in the cave!!

Lower Cave guided tour - cannot speak of the other guided tours but was very happy to secure this one - our last day at the caverns. It took you on a deeper intimate look into the cave formations far from the crowds, so it felt more like an authentic cave experience. It was absolutely safe and certainly manageable, the wife and I are 61 and 56 respectively had no trouble with the rope or ladders or the smaller spaces encountered. You get helmets w/ LED lights and gloves, the mud and dirt was really minimal. You start and end using the elevators, so really most of the tour time is off the beaten trail. The park ranger guides provide interesting back stories to the early exploration of the cave, along with answering any and all questions you have. The 3 hours goes by pretty fast and the length is just right. Plus the ranger said it best - You are a small group of privileged visitors, as there are only 12 people on the tour which is offered only once a day and then only 3 days a week. That's only 36 a week, compared to the 1,000 visitors a day to the Big Room above. It's well worth it to complete your visit to the caverns in a memorable way. Plan early though and book your tickets at least 45 days in advance, even more if you are trying to get more than 2 tickets. We visited the caverns in 3 phases, it began with the early evening bat program the first day, visitors center, the Natural Entrance and Big Room on the 2nd day and the following morning we did the Lower Cave tour. It was a great progression that enhanced the overall experience. An easy set up, solid middle and a grand finale. Go for it.
